Hi mcgooley, thanks for sorting out those cancels for me :D .. I haven't got too many to go now, I have spent weeks trying to get them all in some sort of order ready to be slotted into stock sheets.. I need to buy 100 X8 just to make a start.. Some cancels I will have to devote an entire page just for one #.. I have 9 different BNs for #5, with one more different cancel on the way from the States, soon to make it 10.. And my #2s  number 7 different BNs at the moment..

Six months ago I had perhaps 30 State stamps in total, now I shudder to think how many I have  .. Must be more than 2,000 , (conservative figure) including SA State stamps !! And the truly scary part is that eventually I will have to go over every single stamp, catalogue it in Stampcat, check its W/mark and perfs  Considering that 3/4 of them will have never had their W/mark checked, you never know what I may find :)

Now here are these cancels :-

1381 or 1481 ?
Any ideas ?
239 of Dunolly ?
830 or 836 or 838 ? I think it's 830, but I am not armed with the book..

Image

1302 ? - It's written on the back by a previous owner..
73 ? - Maybe, cannot see the foot of a 1 there..
1135 ? - A bit light this cancel
??? - Cannot make any sense out of this one, so I don't really expect it to be identified..

Image

Another light on cancel
Only a partial, but thought you may recognise it, by what you can see..
28 of Casterton ?
1358 or 1458 ?

Image

Thanks mcgooley
Pete

PS I'm glad your little holiday was enjoyable 8) :D :D

Hi everyone, I have a couple from Qld can some one help out please? 152 & 108 paid a $1 ea hoping they have some R rating to them and hoping the $2 was worth it. Looks like the top of the 108 has an open border too, cool :)

Hi Pete,
first row:
1481 (first issue, unrated) of the Public Offices.
Almost positive this is 1337 of Kinglake. The other possibility, Boweya's 1377 should have the two arabic numerals closer together.
Dunolly's duplex is on the money.
Corryong's 830. The narrow base to the '0' is the give-away.
second row:
St. Kilda Ry Stn, 1124, 2nd duplex.
Sandridge/Port Melbourne's '73', third duplex with 'Port Melbourne' in the datestamp.
Looks to me like 1106 of Loddon Vale.
This is a 1B BN. Which one is open, but I'd put a flutter on Woodend's 119.
third row:
A '1400' number - 149?
Possibly another 1137 of Kinglake.
Casterton's second duplex is on the money.
1458 (second issue) of Drummond North. The very thick arabic numerals give this one away.

Regards

Micky,
Re; Bernard A Manning - Queensland Numeral Cancellations:
108 - Goode's Inn opened 5/1/52 - Type N2a (NSW) - Chalon - RR
Renamed Burnett Inn and Nanango on 1/7/59 - Type N2a (NSW) Sideface - C
These were both in the very early days when Qld was under NSW control and called Moreton Bay.
Qld allocation: Jimna opened 1/7/68 closed 31/10/79 - Type 1e - Chalon - RRRRR
Type 1e - Sideface - RRRRR
I believe yours may be Type N2a, a Common.

152 - Taroom opened 1/4/56 - Type N1a (NSW) - Chalon - RRRR
Type N1a (NSW) - Sideface - RRRR
Qld allocation: Mount Perry opened 26/7/71 - Chalon - Type 1e - RRR
Renamed Tenninering on 17/8/72 - Sideface - Type 1e - C
Reverted to Mount Perry on 22/8/84
I believe yours may be Type 1e, sadly another Common.
If you are really going to get into this I would definately suggest you purchase a set of Manning's. They're certainly worth it.
Cheers,
Frank (Electric Chook)

Would like some help with i.d. and ratings for these if possible.

Thanks in advance Bill.

Hi Pete, I do believe there's another number in there - here's a clearer image of Hepburn:

Not mine :?

I'm inclined to think you might have an indistinct example of Snake Valley's '255'

You know what an 'expert' is, don't you? 'X' is an unknown quality, and 'spurt' is a drip under pressure

Row #1;
102 of Mt. Egerton, unrated.
57 of Kyneton, A1 - second issue, unrated.
200 of South Yarra, 6th duplex, unrated.
Probably 173 of Daylesford, second duplex, unrated.
355 of Warracknabeal, duplex, unrated. (nearly every Victorian BN aficionado knows this one by heart  )
1504 of Malvern, second duplex, unrated.
73 of Port Melbourne (originally Sandridge), 4th duplex, unrated.
Row #2;
144 of Rushworth, 1st duplex, unrated.
207 of Kerang, 1st duplex, unrated.
1622 of Abbotsford, duplex, unrated.
1331 of Boosey North, 4R rated.
1211 of Nhill, 2nd duplex, unrated.
possibly 915 of Tongala, unrated.
?92 - sorry, can't be of more help.
Row #3;
another example of Malvern's 2nd duplex.
84 of Winchelsea, duplex, S-rating for a full example.
727 of Tallangatta, 2nd duplex, unrated.
146 of Rokewood, duplex, unrated.
69 of Prahran, 4th duplex, unrated.
899 of Undera, R-rated.

I have a question regarding two #5 cancels, both type A1, and they both appear different.. Or is it all an illusion

Image

Thanks Pete :P

Edit :- Looking at them now on the screen there is a definate difference.. Not only the thickness of the side bars but the 5 is cut differently !!

Spot on. You have examples of both A1 types used by Ballarat. The first issue, on the 1d emblem, took such a hammering it had to be replaced after about 18 months. After the original issue there was an A2 (2 side-bars), which was used off and on for about 8 years; the second A1 (on the tuppenny mauve) turned up in 1861, just before the first duplex, and can be seen on issues right through to 1890.

Hi Donald,

Your NSW numeral cancellation is 1204. Originally this was Stanmore. When your stamp was issued it was called Stanmore Road and eventaully became Enmore in 1895.

Number 204 was never issued in the type shown on your stamp.

Cheers,

Robert

Micky, spot on the money with '1066' from Williamstown North. Second, non-duplex, issue from circa 1890 and unrated.
524 of Brighton East. This one is relatively uncommon with an R-rating.
397 is Bass. If it's in black, the post-station-master must have been having a bad day; nearly every example I've seen on stamps from that era are blue. Reasonably common with an S-rating, meaning about 300 examples exist.

Ahh mcgooley you done it again :) , the 37 looks blue it is very light so I had to darken it up, and I scored a R-rating that makes my day , I have still many to go through the list provided and I think I have 6 different No.5 now or was it 7 I can't remember what I have shown here now have to go back through the pages.

Thanks again mcgooley

Hi I have returned with the other 5's & a 4. The first 5 does have the base of the first side bar the arrow points it out I thought I had a rare fault, magnified scan showed the truth :( . The second 5 has a big slant to the right & finally No.4 is very thin style. Is there any here that will make $2000 ?:D

Good day to all in SB land of dreams, here are some more I found in the very light and did not see pile  . Sorry for the dark scans some were a bit hard to see.
1st - The 481 is my first block of 4 with BN :D , (sadly it was folded into one stamp)
2nd - 893 has some big numbers is that normal for a Rating S?
3rd - I suppose the 326 is the Rated SS & not the better one  .
4th - Please let the 606 be a 606 & not 909 if it isn't what I wish for what is the best way to know which is which?
5th - MD60? not sure on this one
6th - 448 definately not small figures, so is there something for the large ones? (no begging emoticon?)

I would think this is the correct way up, but could be wrong

The other way around..

Thanks C P, is there a story behind the 6 being reversed ? Was the Toolmaker drunk when he cut it

Also what years was it in use :P

Thanks mate, Bunge

Hi Bunge

To be more precise number 6 was Belfast opened 1.7.1843 then Port Fairy from -.- 1885 but Port Fairy originally used Butterfly 29 and barred oval 50 until 1.1.1854.

Your stamp is an SG88-9 issued 1860 to 1866 so would make it Belfast, I think

Is there a story behind the 6 being reversed ? Not to sure Mcgooley may be able to enlighten us

Was the Toolmaker drunk when he cut it , possible or dyslectic

Mcgooley will correct me if I`m wrong here I hope

Regards

In mid August 1857, Belfast's postmaster, James Dobinson, had just been appointed and he noticed the obliterator was skew-whiff. Not understanding the reason, he wrote to the P.M.G. in Melbourne;

"I observe that the obliterating stamp used in this office has been cut the wrong way up and I have the honour to request that I may be informed if it is requisite that I should return the same to Melbourne for alteration. In the margin will be found an impression of the stamp in question, the figure intended to be represented being, I presume, '9'...."

The official comments on the back of Mr. Dobinson's letter, annotated a day later, state;

"The stamp has been in use for about two years. It was cut purposely to distinguish it from Beechworth as by stamping upside down, as Mr. Dobinson would perhaps do, it would represent a '6'."

Bill Purves was a gold-mine of information :D

Belfast was renamed to Port Fairy on Monday, 20th July 1885. It had originally opened as Port Fairy, but was renamed to Belfast (the privately owned township) at the beginning of 1854.

Micky,
your 606/909 is neither - sorry. Both Louisville (606 = 5R) and Domailles (909 = NNR) closed before the 1d pink was issued. I'm inclined to believe what you have is Natte Yallock's 600 - unrated.
You're correct on your MD60, from the duplex.
The size of the '800' series was large - your 893 is fine.
326 is Traralgon's duplex in its well-worn state - not rated.
Mordiallic's 448 is the first (unrated) issue. It is the duplex with the smaller figures which is scarce.

In your later post,
Rhymey Reef's 924 has a RR-rating.
Nice example of Coburg (Pentridge) second duplex.
Let me know when you no longer have a use for that loverly strike of Kolora's R-rated 742
41 = Euroa's duplex
Wooragee's 778. S-rated, but a worthwhile example.

Do you have any comments on my previous lot? Two 5's and a 4. I do have a lot more to show and I do need to save up for a reference book on skeleton cancels going on 3 pages now so cool. :P

Micky, your Ballarat strikes are (top) 1st numeral duplex, used between 1861 and the end of 1863. The second example is of the 4th numeral duplex, used from 1870-mid 1872.
The Sandhurst '4' is from the 4th duplex, used 1868-1883.
None are rated.

manfaefife, you may so presume :) The original issue of 945, allocated to what became Orville, ceased to exist at the end of 1894. Natimuk's 945 duplex was an error; but wasn't recalled (probably because the authorities couldn't be bothered or couldn't/wouldn't afford a new one). The duplex was manufactured at the height of the 1890's depression

Good day, hope everyone is keeping cool and warm where ever you may be in this world.

I have no idea on this one, I understand it to be Tas. cancel with roman numerals above, not sure why if it is only supposed to be No.24. Looking forward to your views.

I probably missed a number while searching, but I am sure you will correct me.

More inclined to think this might be BARRAPOORT, renamed from the R.S. in 1913.

Hi Downunder58, I think you are right on the money with 855 of Bullarto.. I don't have the book and rely mainly on this Thread and the one Glen gives a link to on page 1, up the top..

Mcgooley is the resident expert here and I am sure she would agree it's definately 855.. I checked both Threads and neither of them mention a particular type, so perhaps they had only the 1 cancel..

Cheers Mate

Hi everyone, just like to show you this I found for sale on line, not mine and not sure if it ever will be about 100 stamps with about 20% numeral cancels for about $900. Here are some of the lot for sale, what do you think about the price tag? Tasmania has a couple nice examples too.
Not on Ebay & not in Australia.
Sorry about the size, the person has not displayed them too well, looks like the 355 is slightly damaged top left, it doesn't look like the type 3, so why so expensive I wonder.

Micky, I can only hope the seller forgot the decimal point two digits to the left  $900 seems very far-fetched, unless of course the vendor is under the impression that because they're old they must be valuable.

855, and 4R. Bullarto post office had a very checkered career, and was open for less than 20 years when it closed in 1893. However, it appears the BN hung around and was used at the railway station - - there is at least one verified usage dated during January 1912. Not knowing the issue date of your stamp; it's either one of the early issues (1890) which falls into the period the post office was still open, or if it's a later issue then it's is a 'rogue' cancel.

Either way, nice :D

Yes indeed mcgooley, nice to have that lot though I will by them for $20, I don't think he will go that low  . Thanks for your help.
Oh by the way, the mysterious 1977, everyone seems to have the common one I think I have a dozen also, is there a particular year or years that has the rare one, and what does it look like?

Cheers

The Rialto Telegraph Office opened in October 1891 when it received it's BN, but from early 1892 it's more usual to see the original 'Telegraph Office Rialto' datestamp alone - hence the scarcity of the first BN. The original is about 9-9.5mm tall as opposed to the duplex which is only about 7mm.

Hi everyone, mcgooley I wonder if you can assist in these two messy ones.
First looks to be a 113 with 3 side bars, and the second a 962, 902 or 982? What do you think of them, pity about the 113 the side has been sliced.

Micky thanks you
