On a good day, with the right buyer, something around $1 I would suggest.

Me too Ron, all day, every day.

There are a small number of dealers offering these, whether they have stock is a different matter.

Tom Osborne is quoting $490 for the 90t and $95 for the K1.

Depends on supply and demand of course, but if I was the seller the price would not be less than 40% of the above.

The "Kapul" stamps add many dollars to the above prices.

For those with deep pockets, Status (lot 3459) currently has what they claim to be an unique set of covers featuring ALL the Kapuls.

Nice find Lake. :)

Yes with July 1993 at base, anything in PNG BOP usually are real goodies. :)

I got about $2,000 for these on my rarity page last year IIRC . . and that was CHEAP!

Hello Ron,

the used ones are not too hard to get - I think 25 - 35 A$ for the 90t stamp and 15 - 20 A$ for the 1K stamp are realistic.

MNH they are still hard to get, as dealers bought the first printing for their supplies. The following printings were mostly used by customers and when - very late - collectors and dealers got aware of this little difference in the bottom no more such stamps were available at the Philatelic Bureau or at post offices.

Nowadays used copies come from correspondence and the price goes down more and more. The prices you quote from dealers are no longer correct. I have several surplus of these - sadly I did not sell them! Please send me an email if interested with prices quoted above..

The most difficult stamp of the BOPs is the 45t stamp with MAY1992 imprint. We got a new MICHEL catalogue for Australia and Southern Sea on 5th of March and this stamp is priced at 350Euro! - about 520 A$ - in MNH condition.

Wolfgang - what is the Michel cat value for postally used?

This lot, plus at least twice as many that I binned, cost me $3.75 (including $1 postage) AFTER I had asked for details of the dates.

I took the trouble of getting stamp 3 top row certified as "unused".

Hi Ron,

Firstly I must say that I do not collect Papua New Guinea, just Papua.

I also admit that I was totally ignorant of the different printings of these BOP stamps.

Over the years I have "accumulated" a lot of PNG stamps that came with the Papua collections that I have bought.

This thread made me go and have a look through my stockbooks to see if I had any varieties of this issue.

The scan below is what I could find.

Image

The first stamp on the top row and the middle stamp on the bottom row are MNH. The rest are used.

The 2 Surcharged stamps are both small "t".

Can anyone give me an idea of value?

Cheers

Bill

Hey there, I only have Scott catalogs, but here is a list of the above stamps as shown in Scott2009
Top 1&2 -Scott#A175-759-21t Manucodia chalybata(lower case t variety) $.45 mint&used
Top 3 - Scott#A175-756-5t Loria loriae(lower case t variety) $.20 mint&used
Bottom 1 - Scott#A175-766-1k Diphyllodes magnificus $2.00 mint&used
Bottom 2&3 - Scott#A175-878C-21t on 90t#765 $12.00 mint $.70 used
or
Scott#A176a-878D-21t on 90t#770D $50.00 mint $1.75 used
Difference is whether t is upper or lower case under overprint
I hope this helps you out a bit, I know it would be better if SG, and I'm working on it! :D

Hi skilo54,

As far as I can see, the Scott and SG catalogues only list the "common" printings. :?:

From the thread above, there were several printings identified by the Imprint Date at the bottom of the stamp. :)

Some of these Imprint Dates appear to be fairly rare and I am wondering if any of mine are worth anything!

Cheers

Hopefully Wolfgang will answer our questions.

The 21t stamp was subject to 5 different printings - 1992, May 1992 (1 Kapul, 2 Kapuls and 4 Kapuls) and 1993 (3 Kapuls).

The 1 Kapul stamp is extremely scarce as it was not advertised by the PNG Bureau.

There is a full listing of mine in another thread but it doesn't include current pricing.

As Wolfgang pointed out above, Tom Osborne's prices are much higher than the Michel catalogue, but he probably has some stock.

The 5t, 90t and K1 are the only ones with the July 1993 date (the 90t was subsequently overprinted 21t - please refer to Glen's article on the emergency overprints on his rarities page).

This is a nice lot. Sadly the stamps are washed. It would have been nice to see them on cover.
The new MICHEL has a price of 25 Euros for used copies (6 Euros in the old catalogue).

My opinion is totally free -- the stamp to me has clearly been cancelled top left corner.

Finally sorted through all my 1992/93 Bird of Paradise stamps. :)

I am looking for some help in filling in the missing catalogue prices for the stamps below.

Can anyone with a recent Michel catalogue fill in the gaps :?:

I have these PNG birds, all muh except the 21t May 1992 printing and it's used. Just need the 10t to fill up this page. I didn't pay much for them, can't remember but I know it wasn't much.

Send me 20 US$ - normal postage, nice stamps, included - and your page will be completed with MNH stamps!

Reading this thread taught me to keep a look out.

Tonights $13 purchase.

Why would you got to Tom Osborne and pay $170. His price list (over the top prices)

Kapuls Prices.

I was killing some time out at my place at Hoppers Crossing before going to work and came across some exchange sheets I had prepared at least 12 years ago and never submitted. Good thing too, because I came across a sheet of used P.N.G. and sitting on it was a VFU May 1992 45t Bird of Paradise.

At the time I would have priced that stamp at 10 cents. Tom Osborne has it priced at $190.

The cheap 21t was there as well. Some times it pays to be forgetful.

Nice find. :D

A gorgeous set... I have only recently started accumulating PNG stamps, I'll keep my eyes out and try to get the set (or part of) cheaply.

I'm not desperate enough to pay full retail.

It only gets better. As I said I had some time to hunt around the house of stamps and remembered a P.N.G. collection I bought at Philas (probably around the same time) only because it had a set of the 11 overprints in it and it was at the right price.

There was a set of the 11 overprints as mentioned and a heap of Bird of Paradise overprints I couldn't work out at the time so just put them away.

There was a set of the 2nd overprints ($225) and the additional two values with the skinny t ($430). There are some other extras as well including one with a part slurred overprint (Obliteration box). The dates on the bottom seem right for these.

The collection finished a few issues after that. I must have been hit with the lucky stick.

Yes, Knowledge Is Power. That was the motto of my Secondary School. (Footscray Tech)

Hi Micky
I don't wish to rain on your parade, but that selection is only 60% complete - 18 out of 30.
None of the more valuable stamps are there.

Retails for about $1 for a nice fine used copy Tassie, a bit less with the heavier postmark.

The one you want to get for a few cents is this, with MAY 1992 inscription at base:-

Image

Tom Osborne's price list for this is $190.00

Does anybody know how many copies of the 45t Bird of Paradise stamp with MAY 1992 inscription at base were printed?

I tried several times to get information from Philatelic Bureau in Port Moresby - none available.

Used stamps are not too difficult, but MNH are really scarce.

Papua New Guinea Calling Nr. 183 of PPS from March 1993 gives the answer: 200 000 printed.

Hello all:
Was going through a box of clippings I'd put aside and came across these (again). This time I remembered this thread, and thought I would put up a scan.
If I read the posts correctly, the only one with extra value would be the 5t with July 1993 at the base.

In any case, they are nice looking stamps.

Thanks for the info.

Is anyone able to assist me with a value for this cover.

Inscription on base of stamp reads "July 1993 Bird of Paradise"

Thanks

Hi,

I stumbled across this on Delcampe:

Image

It was part of a group of four. The 21t was also inscribed May 1992 and the 60t and 90t were inscribed 1992.

Best wishes,
AndrewG

Hi everyone :)

Picked this up from ebay by chance for less than US$3

I think the K1 value is the better one?
Not really my area but thought for $3 I won't mind to put a bet :)

Cheers
