G'day,

Anyone know if this is rare or not?

I have already found some information about Germany's occupation of Samoa, and it said that used stamps were worth more than mint ones because they never really got the opportunity to use them?

It did not say which stamps though.
Also, does the date read 13.11.13 or 13.11.43 ???

Please enlighten me.

Cheers, Rick (Kims better half) AAAARGH... just got a clip around the ear.

Hi Kimberly,

My guess is that it is a 13 because looking at the 4 on the right, it is open, whereas the 13.11.13 has the line going right up. Probably need one of the other experts to comment.

Cheers

You're welcome Kim,
Can't seem to find anything on the Simplified Stanley Gibbons.
Just checked my old Scott (sorry this one is 1981) which says:
1900
Typographed
Unwmkd.
Perf. 14
Catalogue Number: 57
Mint US$1.35
Used US$1.35

There is another which says:
1915
Perf. 14
Wmkd. Lozenges
Scott No. 70
Mint US$1.35
No mention of used.

Sorry this is the best I can offer.

Cheers

Hi, Rick,

Yes, it must be 1913 on the postmark - Germany lost all her colonies as a result of the Great War, with Samoa being under New Zealand Mandate from 19/8/14. Therefore German stamps could not have been used as late as 1943.

From 3/9/14, this set was overprinted "G.R.I." and a value in £/s/d Sterling. (G.R.I. indicated "Georgius Rex Imperator", ie "George King and Emperor" - being King George V).

The reason that the watermarked version is not priced used, is that the watermarked sets (3, 5, 10pf and 5Mk) were only sold over philatelic counters in Berlin, and never reached Samoa. Similar issues exist for most if not all of the German colonies.

Hope that helps...

Gavin

Thanks Gavin, that cleared up my confusion with its rarity, or lack of.

Rick.

Hi Garvin-h,

That was interesting to read. I believe there is a similar story to the Official Stamps of East Germany. Must keep this for another post.

Cheers

Hi Rick

Your postmark is from Apia (the capital) and looks like it is dated 12.11.13. The postmark was originally issued on 10/12/1900 with '*' on either side of the '(SAMOA)' at the base. It was returned to Bremen for repairs and removal of the '*'s in 1907, and after the repairs is known used from 22/11/1907 until 29/11/1914. When it was returned it was used as a reserve cancel so it is a the scarcer of the 2 Apia cancels in use at that time.

I have no records of any forgeries of this cancel.
Cheers
David

David there were certainly good forgeries of some of the German Samoa cancels tho?

Used each side of the high value Mark Values to create "Fine Used".

Hi Glen
My comment about no forgieries only applied to this specific APIA cancel. It was not a general comment about Samoan cancels in general.
Cheers
David
