I am hoping someone can help me with this. I can't find any reference in the material I have. It is on a corner of an envelope & was mounted in an old album from USA.

I probably didn't word that as well as I should. I know what the stamp is, I am curious about the postmark. Sorry, thought I had better make that clear.

Flugpost is airmail, probably from Nuremberg (Nurnberg), and that looks like a pretty little airplane propellor in the middle.

Hi DarrenK,

I believe that is SG No. 158 40pf orange (1921) Germany. Am not familiar with the postmark though. Need one of the experts on German stamps to comment.

Cheers

Hi DarrenK,

Looking at my Scott's Cat (1981) it could be No. 142 (lozenges watermark)(US$0.20) or No. 166 (this one with network watermark)(US$4.00 used). Please note these are ancient prices.

Cheers

Early airmail usage like this always fetches a premium on cover or on piece.

It's got to be Lozenges watermark, as the 40pfg with Network watermark wasn't issued until January 1922.

However, I'd think it's got to be worth at least $2 to get a 20c stamp with that cancel...

Hi, Darren,

I did a bit more research on this after I'd logged off.

The "D.Ph.T" on the cancel is an abbreviation of "Deutche Philatelisten Tag", or "German Stamp Day", an event held annually.

The date of 24/7/21 was that year's Stamp Day.

There was also a special Postcard issued for the event, which is known used with the same cancel.

Thank you very much Gavin.

I had been looking at the semi postals of the Rhine & Main Airmail from 1912 that had the overprint E. EL. P. & thought the postmark may be related. This overprint stood for Ex Est Luftpost (East Airmail) & as the letters D. PH. T. were laid out the same fashion I thought perhaps it may have been an abreviation for a later airline.

Once again, thank you.

Darren,

You're welcome...

...actually it's time to come clean - my "research" was that I was trawling through Ebay UK when I found this by pure coincidence:

If you're interested, the auction's got about 28 hours to run, starting price is £6.99 and there are no bids yet.

I don't know the dealer, so can't vouch for him/her, but feedback looks OK.

Just realised, that's a pre-printed Postal Stationery card with 3 semi-official/cinderalla stamps on it...

...if Darren doesn't put in a bid by tonight, I might have to!!!
