And what variety is that Thomas? Looks perfectly normal to me.

It you add as much detail to your headings and questions the better the chance of a response that assists. Advising the Wmk will assist for starters.

Also maybe edit your thread heading. Perhaps you meant three half pence brown?

Or as we more usually type it :

1½d brown

Thomas,

The 1 1/2d. had several "lives" (1919-1938) and colours included black/brown/ brown shades, green & red.

As Glen says the w/mark is needed to start with. The colour from the scan appears to be black/brown so it is probably from the earlier 1918-1919 Die I issue on either the Large or Large Multiple w/mark paper. The number issued in this colour was approx. 157,225,200. The black/brown colour made cancels hard to detect so this colour was discontinued in 1919.

My professional guess is it is LARGE Multi wmk.

But as the member has not told us what the variety is hard to help him more.

Hi Thomas

I have had a close look for you but I have not been able to plate it. I assume you were talking about the distorted H in THREE although the stamp also has a long bottom bar on the last E of THREE and a break in the top frame 4 or so mm from the right corner. Having said all that none of these appear to have been plated.

The stamps looks to be a large multi wmk and this makes it difficult to plate as this wmk makes for many weaknesses in the printing giving the appearance of flaws. You should always check the relationship of the flaw to the wmk because of this problem. If the flaw matches up to parts of the wmk then you should be suspicious that it is just a transient flaw and not constant.

It can be quite difficult plating small flaws off a scan so it would help if you describe the flaw you are seeing clearly and also if you provide a 2nd high-density scan (say 600 dpi) of the area with the flaw.

These early Georgian Heads are great stamps for plating as a high percentage of them have plateable flaws. But small flaws are always a problem as they will not treated as constant flaws until multiple copies have been found.

If you want to go down this collecting path I will be happy to recommend some literature for you.

Cheers
David.

I agree with David's comments. I would bet good money that it is large multiple watermark. All of the 1½d stamps in this colour were printed by Harrison - and mostly on poor quality paper where the wmk shows through and the ink did not take very well to the paper where the wmk appears. This is very common and of no extra value to the stamp.

For that matter, it is worth noting that all of the single wmk and large multiple wmk 1½ stamps in every shade of brown, black-brown and green were printed by Harrison.
