I have a question about Australian Postal Rates. How are package rates determined? Here in the United States with the last rate increase, more importance is given to the shape rather than the weight of packages. Any insight on Australian postal rates would be appreciated. :D :o

Hi John,
As you could see by the postage calculator, we work on size, weight and thickness. These all seem to be aimed at the cost of carrying them on airmail. Where space taken and weight are big considerations. Regular sizes, shapes and thicknesses can be better packed into a smaller space and hence less cost in transporting them. Internal parcels tend to be moved by road, which cheaper but takes longer, a premium is paid for Air parcels.

Waroff49- Thanks for insight. The new postal rates here in the United States are similiar. We have 4 main catergories of mail- postcards, letters, large envelopes and parcels. Each of these have very unique sorting machines associated with them. The dimensions of postcards and letters-the minimum and maximum sizes is fixed as well as large envelopes. Where the difference comes in is the thickness of the item being mailed. Information can be found at www.usps.com click on products then click on publications then click on Mailpro. The 2 issues have a overview of the rate change and the rate charts and diagrams. You can download them and print them out.  :o :(
