This is the Kirkwall Post Office in the Orkney Islands north of Scotland.

Stanley Gibbons shop in the Stand, London. Am I allowed to say that I was disappointed? They are running down all non-British Commonwealth stock in their retail shop and their stock books were almost empty.

These two shots of Blackwells bookshop in Oxford are for MargoZ and any other librarians out there.

How clever is the Waterford crystal post box? Love that one Graeme.

Oxford is very pretty and I can see where the saying 'onya bike' would have come from

Mr Boggler,

A lot of premises in the UK and Ireland were standing empty - up for sale or lease. The place next to the Kirkwall Post Office was only one. Here in Australia we have got off very lightly from the world recession.

Brummie,

They had a lot more crystal sculptures - eg a polar bear! They have some very talented people there.
As you are Sydney based, I hope you are reading my Manly-Warringah club newsletter thread as well. Feel free to comment on that thread.

We were in Buenos Aires last month and there is a large Arcade full of dealers at Maipu St, and has been for many decades - I first visited it in 1984.

There is a well established Sunday outdoor stamp market in BA at Rivadavia Park.

Dealers in these places sell near nothing else except regional material though.

We have several members there in BA and caught up with chalten for lunch -

Good to see there is still at least one arcade on earth near full of stamp dealers. :)

Because our trip to Britain in 2009 went so well, SWMBO insisted that we go to France this year (I did persuade her to wait until after the Northern Beaches Expo in Sydney).

This young lady is delivering letters in Paris about two blocks from the Champs Elysees.

This is the Post Office in Bayeaux, quite near the museum with the Bayeaux Tapestry on display.

Image

This is the Post Office on Mont St Michel, literally on the Mont which is a rocky outcrop sticking out of a marshy river delta. All the buildings are built up the cliff face with the mediaeval abbey on tip.

Image

This is the Post Office in a tiny mountain-top village in Provence.

and this is the back view of that Post Office.

and a close-up view.

This is a Post Office near the beach in Nice, complete with beggar sitting beside the ATM - a too common sight in France, unfortunately.

All right, some-one please tell me how to get these photos the right way up.

I have edited them on my on computer and also in Photobucket but it apparently doesn't make any difference!

I thought this was two stamp shops side-by-side in Nice, in a street with other hobby shops such as artists' supplies and model making.

Image

But it turned out to be one dealer using the second shop window for display purposes only.

And here are M. and Mme. Vespa with some clients.

The Post Office in San Antonio, Texas, is inside the Federal Court building. You have to pass through security and metal detectors to buy a stamp.

The Post Office is the hatch on the right of this corridor.

This is a mail box on the corner of Crockett and Losoya Streets in San Antonio, Texas.

Toribio Losoya was born in San Antonio, Mexico in 1808. He joined the Texans and died defending the Alamo in 1836. His statue is on Losoya Street.

Crockett's name is also remembered in the name of this hotel, seen over the wall of the Alamo.
Image

Oh, all right. Here is the Alamo.

What happens when you leave two mail boxes together? They multiply, as in these examples on Wilshire Boulevarde, Los Angeles.

Also on Wilshire Boulevarde.

I don't usually frequent ladies' wear shops, but this one caught my eye.

Graeme Morriss - some of your photos there remind me of a French film about a French postman, who lives in beautiful sunny Southern France, but gets transferred to the dreaded North! A great Friday night film - highly recommended!

Only stamp related photo I have is this thing I saw in a window in Milano, Italy, and wondered what it was

Catweazle,

I'll keep an eye out for that film.

While we were in France, I bought the Jacques Tati films: Mon Oncle and Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot.

Of course, how could we forget! Jacques Tati did a film about a funny postman too! (No, seriously, he really did. I think I prefer it to the two above)

Of course!

I had forgotten but I did see it mentioned in a television documentary on the life of Jaques Tati.
