So I took a series of close-ups of a mouse that got whacked by a spring trap. It's a clean snap, no red anywhere. Do you think it may be a bit upsetting for the younger ones? I think our youngest is probably 13 or so. I don't think it's going to be a problem. Should I post them here?

No. :x Why bother to post a pic like that? Does it look beautiful like the Hermit Crab? No

Is it unusual? No. Is it interesting? No. Will we learn anything from it? No. There is enough death and sadness happening all over the world now. Why glorify the death of anything by posting it in such a way?

On the subject of Hermit Crabs I will mention, that as a child, I grew up in Port Hedland in the north west of Australia. Every time the tide went out there would be millions of these crabs running around, some dragging new shells to crawl into, others devouring dead marine creatures. Now Port Hedland is a major export area for Iron Ore. All the crabs have gone.

The only way for Audubon to get close enough to his birds to get the level of detail he painted was to shoot them. Robert Bateman keeps dead birds frozen in the position he desires. When they start to droop he puts them in the freezer again. There is no way I could have taken close-ups of a possum's hands unless it was dead. It doesn't glorify death to study corpses. It's scientific curiousity.

Still for those people that may be upset by it, these pictures are carefully selected to show no evidence of the trap.

The details of this back foot are quite remarkable.

I still think this guy was as cute as the hermit crabs, but the hermit crabs don't leave feces near my food to make me sick. By the way, if I had my choice of pets, it would be mice, rats, and gerbils. I used to have a gerbil and a mouse that lived in my room when I was a kid. Yoko was an older mouse, so she just lived on a towel on top of a short bookshelf with no cage because she didn't wander and I just picked up the towel every day, shook it off outside, and washed it. Some animals are pets, some are food. We have two roosters and five hens that all have names and give us eggs everyday. We had a pet rabbit for years that we just buried this month. When I ate meat I still ate rabbit and chicken though. It's not morbid, its mundane.

Yeah, I know. It's too bad rodents have caused so many problems for humans throughout history, because they'd make perfect pets. They're sharp as a tack, they're cute as a button, and they co-exist with us by choice. One time though, my wife woke up in the middle of the night and saw me giving a piece of cheese to a mouse through one of the stove top grills (he was in the dish underneath). The jig was up. Now I have to be a grown-up and set traps.

Mice look cute too. I still find it hard to believe that some people are fine with spiders, but really freak out whenever they see a mouse! Give me a mouse anyday over a spider

Caught a centipede with a little container and brought it home for pics. Man, these things don't want to sit still, ever.

So I put him in the fridge for a while to slow him down. Slowed him down alright. Too cold to right itself, so I took a couple good close-up pics of the underside.

Thirty legs! No wonder I can't catch it with the autofocus!

I think it's cool that at the right angle you can see the internal pieces.

Yesterday my wife was walking my daughter's dog in the conservation area and spotted a tree with a lot of droppings on the trunk and underneath. She looked around and spotted a Long-Eared Owl
staring at her, a little uncomfortable about the dog. With all the droppings we figured it was a regular perch, so we went back today and Hootie McHoot-Hoot was still there.

Like they say, the important thing in real estate is location, location, location....and this is the perfect spot. It's along the open trail, perfect for spotting things and catching them out in the clearing, but a couple rows of trees into the woods, so nobody can rush the perch. These aren't macro, but still close-ups.

We didn't stay too long, we didn't want the owl to feel the urge to relocate.

Anyway, with spring coming, more critter pics are bound to come around. That's all for now.

One of the less cool aspects of spring, a tick got into the house. It probably came in on one of the pets.

Even though it's just a blanket, the thing is still instinctively trying to bury its head into the strands, mouth parts looking for the flesh. Ugh.

My son and I walked in the conservation area across the street again today. It's finally getting dry enough to walk through again. We came across this little toad.

Found this beetle(?) working on a dandelion. Lots of other pictures today, but either not critters, or not close-ups.

When I went to the road to get the mail this afternoon, this little guy was on the ground, stunned. He probably got blown to the ground by a passing transport. After the time it took to take these pictures and put him in a quiet place outside, he was already more lively and his antennae were out again, rather than straight up.
