This is not an April Fool's spoof. Enjoy the piece below - a précis of a discussion at our home a few days ago.

Parents Never Lie!

A few days ago there was a full moon and at night it cast a bright light in our otherwise unlit bathroom. We (my wife, three children and I) were enjoying a meal at home when a discussion about the moon arose – probably from the fact that we had just experienced a full moon and a question about what a blue moon was. Antionette and Dominic (our middle boy) kept on eating. The discussion involved mostly Jonathon (aged 10), and I with some help (?) from Sheridan (14) and went along the lines something as follows:

J. The moon is not blue – it is white.
D. No it's not! It is made of cheese! Have you not heard of the saying that the moon is made of green cheese?
J. The moon is not made of cheese – green or otherwise.
D. Oh yes it is! There is green cheese and blue cheese as well as other cheeses so why should not the moon be made of cheese?
J. The moon is not made of cheese!
D. Help me out: Hey diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle, the …
J. Cow jumped over the moon …
D. Exactly! If the cow jumped over the moon it had to be on the moon in the first place! What do cows produce?
J. Milk.
D. What is cheese made from?
J. Milk.
D. Exactly! The cow that jumped over the moon was on the moon in the first place producing milk to produce cheese for the moon.
S. What do cows eat dad?
D. Grass! However, on the moon there is no grass for the cow to eat only cheese!
S. Where does the milk become processed on the moon?
D. In the cheeseria inside the moon.
J. The moon has a cheeseria?
D. Yes – inside the moon and it is run by the man in the moon of course!
J. The moon is not made of cheese – it is the wrong colour anyway! The moon is white – not yellow.
D. Sheridan and I like cheeses. Some of the cheeses that we eat are white on the outside (like camembert and brie) and are yellow on the inside – just like the moon.
S. What about moon rocks?
D. What about them?
S. Moon rocks are hard and cheese is soft. How do you explain that?
D. Easy! No one has found the switch on the moon yet to keep the cheese warm up there. When it comes down here it is very hard.

This proves: i) that parents never lie and ii) that the moon is made of cheese.
