Hello Everyone.

I am not sure if this is the right place for this topic.

But, I wanted to start a topic for Stampboards members in which everyone can share their experiences, positive or negative, here at Stampboards.

Today is my one year anniversary here at Stampboards.

I can't believe how fast the year has gone by and how much I have learned over the course of a year.

More importantly, Stampboards has given me the opportunity to meet a lot of wonderful people who share the same passion for collecting that I do.

Also, I would like to Thank Everyone who has helped me with my beginner questions.

Thank You.

Cheers!

Happy 1st Anniversary!

The traditional gift would be something made of paper.... easy as pie to a stamp collector, but you don't list your interests on your profile so I'll go with something I'd certainly like from Canada.

Virtual gift only of course.

Mine is 2005.

I started the board, made 6 trial posts, and totally forgot about the whole project for the next 2 years! :lol: :lol:

Thank you RobRoyH for the virtual gift.
I am a beginner world collector, so at the moment anything will suffice.

Glen:
It's a good thing that you did decide to go through with your idea.
I think it's enjoying great success.

Cheers!

Mine was November 2007. In the time I have been here I have posted 8556 messages. I did a quick calculation at it works out that, in the 971 days I have been here, I have posted an average of 8.8 posts per day (without going to the counting threads and the like!). Looks like I desperately need to get a life!

Good grief, how times flies! I'll be 2 years come November this year. (Not as much as some of the other members, but it just made me realise, or rather, wonder where the last few years have disappeared to!)

Missed a couple of months in my calculation. I do feel so much better now. Probably don't need to get a life after all. :D

I just went back and read the original post and I think it deserves a more serious response.

Glen was the only one I knew of back in 2007 and I had not met him. I have now had face-to-face contact with quite a few members.

I can only think of a couple of negatives. One is getting to know people, even if only virtually, and then they are gone. I guess that is life and some of them have enriched mine. The other is seeing so many wonderful collections and then realising that you can't have it all, especially with limited finances.

The highlights? The quality of some of those images - I can't think of a better example than BACK O' BOURKE's PNG birds thread. There is also my Australian Landscapes Collection (both physical and virtual http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=15209) which would not have seen the light of day without the encouragement of Board members. There are many more positives but the only other one I will mention is the satisfaction of playing a part in the successful administration of the Board.

What about other members?

Feb. 12, 2008 for me! I can honestly say I have not had a day go by that I have not read StampBoards. Guess I shall have to join Kevin in looking for a life!

I enjoy it more than any other stamp "organization" to which I have ever belonged. I also have made many friends who I shall probably never meet in person, yet they are people who I have the greatest respect for and great admiration. Why? Because we share the same passion.

I had "flirted" with Indian States for about 10 years, but was told "don't bother, no one collects those" ----- then I found Stampboards and a whole world was opened for me. There ARE people out there who collect them ---- and they are a "proper" stamp collection!! My taste had been satisfied.!!

I found Australia, a place of which I knew almost nothing other than what I'd seen in the movies. I discovered knowledgeable stamp collectors live there!!

And they eat something called "vegamite"!! Thanks StampBoards.

I joined on March 30, 2008.

I also look on Stampboards every day. It has mostly been a positive experience, but there have been a couple of occasions when my blood pressure went through the roof after reading a certain member's comments ( but he's under a lifetime ban, now, so it won't happen, again).

I'm a pedant. So one thing that I'm getting used to, but dislike intensely, is the poor spelling in some of the responses.

The philately presented is often exceptional, and I've learned about many aspects of philately that I didn't even know existed.

I think we all owe Glen a debt of gratitude for getting the board going and paying for its' upkeep, and we should all acknowledge that through our individual contributions, we are adding to the enjoyment of philately for years to come.

I'll bring this thread up for the Holidays, so other members can share their stories.

Can the Moderators please move this thread, to the possibly more appropriate, Discuss Stamps Forum?

Thank you.

Hi all,

My anniversary is Wed Jan 14, 2009 11:01:55 am. I think I joined Stampboards when I decided to move from collecting to selling, and I don't think I would have lasted as long as I have without the knowledge I get from Stampboards. I'm not a member of a regular Stamp Club, only this 'virtual' club.

Darrin.

Best regards and hearty thanks from the first SB Member (after Glen), coming up on five years in a few weeks. Great fun and great friends!

My friend Jay Smith, who unwisely stopped for a pizza, became the second SB Member just two hours later. :lol: :lol: :lol:

The Board does its kooks and odd characters sometimes. Even though it was years ago, the "biscuit tin at the side of the road" thread is still made reference to as inside joke. :lol:

Everyone who signs up is given the same opportunity and right to post and contribute. Some jump in actively; some 'lurk'; some seem to join then never come back to post; and some apparently go off their medication, create a mess for the Moderators, and get themselves booted further than the convicts sent to Botany Bay. :lol: A great job is done to keep the spammers away, but one can't really ask in the registration form "are you a wacko who's going to make inflammatory posts that stir up anger?" :o

Quote:

You can't be more of a pedant than our resident grammarian muruk. 8) Can always count on him to point out in a lighthearted way to someone their error. Well I'm in the same boat, I always shake my head at poor spelling by native speakers and think "really people, how hard can it be?"

Quote:
The philately presented is often exceptional, and I've learned about many aspects of philately that I didn't even know existed.

The Board is "all things to all people" in a way. If you just want idle counting, there's a place for that. If you want to look at scans of pretty stamps, there's lots of that. If you want to discuss with others your specialized area (Geo V heads printing flaws, which do my head in; Indian Uglies) you're liking to find somewhere, or you can start your own thread; if you want to academically puzzle over the minutiae of engraving and printing you can (my eyes glazed over after awhile trying to understand the Penny Red Plate 77 thread).

Looking at the profile details on one of my postings, it says my join date was June, 2009. Wow, its been that long. Feels like only a year, not 2.5!

One of the great things here is if you don't find a thread on a topic or an answer to your question (annoyingly some people don't search first, and start a thread that asks a question for which several threads already exist) you can start your own. For instance tonymacg has become something of a lord, with the Uglies thread his manor. :mrgreen:

Now if only more young people could be enticed to the hobby. Maybe add a first-person-shooter game on the Board. :roll: The plot could be hunting down all the philatelic forgers and dodgy eBay sellers, while in true game style picking up caches of weapons and health boosts that are incongruously lying around the street everywhere. :P

Like AMark, I greatly appreciate the help that is here in Stampboards - , for example, I explore KGV threads sometimes, terrified that it will seem even more difficult when I get to them in my collection!

And I have found great things, and more insight.

My entry was 4 Apr 2008, so I am going on for four years now.

Thanks to all...

Paul

One main thing I 've found out from Stampboards is how worthless most people's stamp collections really are.....

But you can always visit the eBay Dreamers thread, and visualise those people who inherited Grandpaw's stamp collection, posting it up on eBay and sitting back waiting for the untold wealth to roll in...

...then they wake up.

What do you call worthless? Is it a collection of stamps that have very low value but has taken a lifetime to collect for there beauty and history and just for the fun of it.

I doubt very seriously most stamp collectors, collect for profit, they collect for the fun of the hobby. In my opinion if you collect to try and make a profit you are an investor. Nothing wrong with that if you can afford it.
To call someones collection worthless because they have no high dollar stamps is pushing it a bit in my opinion.

Just over 4 years for me. Joined Nov 2007.

I try to get on at least once a week.

In my time here I have had the privilege to have communicated with some of the most knowledgeable people around and I am still amazed at the wealth and depth of knowledge of the members.

This is with out a doubt the best stamp website around.

This is my second year at Stampboards.

My collection is slowly growing and shifting, I am meeting many interesting people who share the same passion for collecting as I, and I am absorbing knowledge like a sponge.

Is this a great place or what?

I've only been a member since February this year, so probably would still be considered a "Newbie" (new word I learned here). However, I can say SB has resulted in me:
(1) enjoying the hobby immensely more;
(2) expanding my range of interests to a much larger number of countries;
(3) causing me to become enthusiastic about completely upgrading my albums; digging out my old collection from the closet and making it part of my more "modern" collection;
(4) upgrading my sorting and storage system and media;
(5) enabling me to enjoy every stamp regardless of value;
(6) disregarding the value of my collection in favour of the enjoyment it provides;
(7) spending a #$(at)%& of a lot more money; and
(8) ignoring a lot of other things I should be doing (but who cares)!
Happy collecting!

While we continue to hear such positive comments we will continue to promote Stampboards. Thanks greidp.

Oh, and I forgot to mention:
I have a new appreciation of 'Roos - took me a while to figure out what the term meant - found a few dozen of them tucked away in an old stock book - no idea where I got them - probably should keep them, right?

Hi everyone,

My anniversary (1 year) is coming up in a few days and I just wanted to thank everyone who has been friendly and helping. I am a WW collector so a board like this, with people all over the world who collect so many different things really helps me. The site has also shown me just how vast the amount of information that this great hobby has to offer, if you are willing to dig a little. 8)

Cheers everyone,

Erik
