Is anybody interested in discussing squared circle postmarks on a worldwide basis?I am researching this subject and discovered that there is no publication that is actually listing ALL the countries where squared circle postmarks were used.I have made my own list but it is growing day by day.
The last additions to my list I have made are:
Spain (Madrid)
Hawaii
Brazil (Belem)
China (Shangai)
Queensland (Brisbane)
St. Martin (Dutch Antilles)

I am sure I am missing some more and would like to exchange information with other aficionados of this subject
thanks
Mattia

Mattia, I just posted this squared circle of Tikamgarh/Tikamgurh, the capital of Orchha State, on another thread

Image

but it may be of use here, too. As far as I know, Tikamgarh was the only town in Orchha to use a squared circle; all the other post offices used ordinary circular or dumb cancellations.

I did not have it on my list of Indian postmarks.

Which is the other tread? I could be interested to see it

Actually, I was discussing a forgery of this squared circle cancel in the Indian States thread: http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=8480&start=6950 It's at the bottom of the page.

The British Post Office in Jammu & Kashmir also used a squared circle at one time. I'll try to find an example for you.

Yes I have seen the thread, definitely that's out of my league but I can see that the postmark above must be a forgery.

Yes I am aware of two postmarks at Srinagar and Jammu, and also a Tavi Jammu State Mail agency.

How much information do you have about the postmarks used outside india on Indian stamps?

I have a list of Aden(3), Burma, Zanzibar, Nepal, Mesopotamia, Persia, French India but have managed to get very few samples.

I only have Aden and Aden Cantonment, Busrah, Bushire, Mahommera, Zanzibar.

Would be interested in pictures of any other one for my library.

Thanks

I'm sorry, but I concentrate only on the Indian States. I don't really know about usages outside India.

Here is a good example of the Srinagar squared circle, unfortunately on a reprint of the Kashmir ¼ Anna, so the cancellation was probably applied by favour:

Those are the two countries I have done less work on because everything is well documented and there is plenty of information.I am focusing more on those areas which are still a bit unknown, particularly Africa,Asia and South America. And of course I have a strong interest in the Italian area, where there are still new findings to be made.Since January I have notified the editor of the Italian catalogue of 4 new findings which were not in catalogue.

You can add almost all the British Colonies. From my collecting area Cape of Good Hope, Orange Free State and Cyprus.

Here is the "front page" from the Cape of Good Hope.

I forgot to mention Charkhari State:

However, the squared circle cancellations were only ever used (as far as I know) to cancel-to-order. The genuine postal cancellations were CDSs, like the example at right.

This is from a page that I made up, as I have quite a few of these. You can find information for them in Goldblatt - The Postal History of the Cape of Good Hope. My scanner is not working to post more images (the image above was from an old thread of mine). For Cyprus from memory you probably right (you can check with Castle's Cyprus Postal History).

Jhalrapatan may have had a squared circle cancellation from the British Indian PO, although I don't have an example. This was sent from Fatehpur (I'm not sure which one) to Jhalrapatan

Image

Image

with a typical Jhalawar State cancellation (not a squared circle) and a very faint British Indian Jhalrapatan CDS (again, not a squared circle).

I did not have that one on my list.Apparently there is only one Jhalrapatan known on a stamp from Jhalawar (Great britain and Commonwealth Philatelic Society in Switzerland)

Jhalawar State never used squared circle postmarks. I'm afraid the list is not correct.

What the book says is that there has been a Jhairapatan square circle used on a stamp of a letter coming from Jhalawar and apparently the letter is dated Dec 04,1894.there is no picture

It could only have been a British Indian Post Office cancellation, then, not a Jhalawar State squared circle.

Hi Yannis,

I have just finished sorting my Cape squared circles out and looking at your page this one got me curious, above it says July 82 as the earliest date but I have this one which seems to be May 1882.

Image

I also wondered if you could confirm how many offices used the squared circle as I unfortunately cannot read it on your scan of the page? I think I have examples of 39 places (not all good strikes plus I notice I am missing Montague) this is including Kuruman and Vryburg. I will list them if this would be helpful to somebody

Thanks

Lundy :D

Hi All,

Don't forget to add Nyasaland to the list, plenty of offices using SC in this country.

Also gives me the opportunity to show my avatar a bit larger 8) This is cancelled with a type 6z Banks & Roberts.

Image

and a type 6 used at Zomba. Difference being no dots either side of the date

Image

One of the bibles for BCA/Nyasaland postmarks is a book called " The Postmarks of Nyasaland & Malawi" by Banks & Roberts, available through the Rhodesia Study Circle.

Could you show your squared postmark of Sint Maarten/ St.Martin, if this is possible of course. I'm just curious how it looks like.

Hi Lundy,

Thanks for the comments. Your last one for Deep Bay is interesting. This is a type 7.1 where Deep and Bay are close together, 7.2 has them much further apart. Actually the book suggests April 11 02 is the earliest seen!

and this is my Saint Martin Postmark. The stamp is in bad conditions but the postmark is fairly clear. I was surprised it was not written in Dutch as Marteen but I guess at that time they used the French name?

Probably, although after the treaty of Concordia (written in 1648) the Dutch and French part were officially divided. So, what would be the purpose of the French name (maybe there was just one post office on the entire island?).

As you will have difficulty finding one of these, here is my latest acquisition:

Image

Bov: Para (20 Feb 1904)

Used on a riverboat on the upper Para river in Suriname. According to Posthistorie van het Rijksdeel Suriname 1650-1975, by Erfmann and Stuut, only known on one postal card, one envelope, and a few stamps. Their earliest known use is 11 June 1904, so the above is now the earliest known use.

Also in case it is of use,

I just went through the Postmarks of the Orange Free State and The Orange River Colony by AGM Batten and from there there seems to be only one squared circle used at Bloemfontein.

There were however a number of places that used a squared Octagon design. These being:
Bloemfontein
Deput
Drienfontein
Fauresmith
Ficksburg
Frankfort
Jammerbergdrift
Koffyfontein
Kruidfontein
Phillipolis
Reitz
Reitzburg
Vrede
Zastron

Hope this is of use

Cape of Good Hope

I think there could be another addition to the list

Kuruman , C.G.H.

also I would like your help to identify one of the stamps I have and which is shown in the above picture.
The squared circle postmark shows the following letters
"ACONSE" at least that's what I am reading
thanks
