Fairly ordinary cover, but hey ho it's pre-decimal.

Picked this up in a cheap box at a fair. Does it have any merit or should I have left it in the box ?

Are there any postal markings to suggest that it was redirected by post?

With such a brief address it may well have been forwarded by diplomatic bag.

As you can see there is a Foreign Office Oval handstamp on the reverse, but I can't make out what the wording is at the bottom of the oval.

Image

Looks like Sept 53 on the postmark so it's taken a while to get wherever the backstamp came from.

Hi All,

I picked this one up the other day.

Image

I'm trying to work out if it is paying the correct rate. Can anyone help?

Thanks Staples.

Been following this thread for a while, here is my small contribution, the first cover from May 1964 to Czechoslovakia is my favourite.

I’ve enjoyed reading this thread. My interest is growing in this area, but I am on the learning curve, so any comment would be greatly appreciated.

For my first real post let me put up a cover and its contents that I found in a bric-a-brac shop down the road recently. I paid $5.00 for it.

Posted in Perth and received in Guildford on the same day (27 February, 1900), it contained a Statement of Accounts to the Rev Sadler for rent collected on four properties in Perth. The good Reverend received 12 pounds 1 shilling for the month of January, while the agent seems to have had a Commission of 13 shillings (about 5%) for his effort. The agent was a bit slow in getting his money to him it would seem. Some things never change (although the Commission seems to be very modest by today's level).

I think that tracking down more detail on the people mentioned in this exchange might add a bit of extra interest to it. Does anybody have any favourite examples that they can refer me to as a guide?

I can understand the attraction of Solo Frankings but those who only collect “Solo’s” I think miss out. Multi franked covers have a beauty all of their own. These three 6/- Airmail Rate covers to the USA help demonstrate the point. Same rate same destination but three different sets of frankings.

Glen, I am just trying to help you out. You really don't want a crappy old envelope like that around and I am sure you would be embarrassed to sell it. So, just send it to me and I will woodchip it for you. :D

Seriously though, you obviously have it. From the scan it looks OK (considering the cancel), but you really need to see them close up to have any confidence.

Glen, is that the cover that is mentioned from the upcoming auction of Hugh Morgan's collection?

As I mentioned elsewhere, I also like the inverted OS on KGV 2d red on front :)

Your right. It's all stained. Think I better forget about it

Any idea or thoughts on possible worth of those couple of grubby items? Perhaps Rod Perry might have an idea?

"Probably??"

Definitely unique I'd say, and hence my comment on the $5000 cat price!

Probably DOUBLE full ACSC invoice price is my guess.

Hi all,

Just thought I'd share a few covers I've bought recently.

The first is from Sydeny to Moresby

Image

Next is from Sydney to London via Auckland

Image

One from Victoria to England

Image

The last is from Melbounre to London

Image

I don't know much when it comes to covers or their value, but these just seemed to catch my eye recently.

Will, those are first flight covers and are philatelic (i.e. not commercial usage). There is a thread around somewhere, "Share your flight covers" or similar. :D

Patg ... the use of the 1/6d Galah on cover to USA was uncommon.

I listed these 3 today for $50 and it too has one. 8)

Image

Trio of interesting 1962/63/64 commercial covers to USA.

Attractive trio.

The 1964 Adelaide one with 6d and 1/6d Birds is most unusual, as a single 2/- Flaneel Flower was near always used - very common covers to USA.

These 2 are cat $60 on cover, as they are seldom seen.

The 1963 Melbourne stamp mix is very interesting way to make the 2/3d rate, and even 2 x 1/- Columbo plan is not common, as again a single 2/- Flannel Flower for that purpose was produced.

That address should still find Lloyds Bank which is in the Market Place, probably where it has been for decades.

Here are a few I bought today just because they seems too cheap to say no

Image
Image

On this one the stamp is damaged but I thought it had some real charm to it
Image

I think this would have been a real bargain but I am guessing the tape on both sides kills any value, 10/- arms on cover

Thanks

Lundy :D

Is the tape over the stamp? It looks like it is under it. If so, it is a pretty nice cover and a rare solo use of the 10/-.

Hi Peter,

The tape is under the stamp so was put there before posting,

I thought it had to be worth £2 as I had not seen many on cover, I take it I got a good buy then?

I got the above plus the other pre-decimal and decimal I added for £3.30 so although I don't collect covers I just had to buy them!

Thanks

Lundy :D

Lundy, the 10/- on cover has got to be worth at least A$50 (around £30) any day of the week in that condition.

Glens valuation is much closer to the mark. It's a scarce cover and worth at least $150 I think.

I've never seen a solo franking 10/- - a VERY rare beast.

Love to know exactly what rate it was paying!

Wow, thanks all,

I had no idea it would have that sort of value! :D

I will try and list it up for sale here, as it is one of the few things I don't really collect and hopefully it will find a new owner who appreciates it more.

Thanks again

Lundy :D

Hi all,

I dont really collect covers but picked this up with some others whilst it is not in great condition is the 10/- robes relatively scarce on commercial cover?

I only allowed a couple of pounds for it in my bid.

Would anybody be able to suggest a fair price for this as well?

Thanks

Lundy,

You have definitely picked up a couple of bargains   . The 10/- robes on cover has a catalogue value of $350 AUD.

Cheers

Staples

Thanks Staples,

Again I thought it was pretty scarce but had no idea it would have had that type of value, :D

Unfortunately it is not perfect, as I don't collect covers I find it so difficult to put a value on these things and really appreciate help with this.

The odd cover find might subsidise some of my other collection that way.

Thanks

Lundy :D

As you can see there is a Foreign Office Oval handstamp on the reverse, but I can't make out what the wording is at the bottom of the oval.

Reviving something from earlier on...

The oval cancel to me looks like PERTH at the bottom. Given that the return address (barely still) says Western Australia, that would all fit.

I'd agree with norvic, would surely have gone by diplomatic bag to Manila, as the PO would never have delivered a letter forwarded with just the name of the city applied.

Good evening all :)
Finally I am back in Melbourne after spending 9 months in Europe, and have a chance to go through all my online / ebay purchases during that time. I bought quite a few covers etc (and I must say ebay is still a good place to buy covers, if you know what to look for) and below are a few better ones I have picked up.
