I recently acquired full booklets of domestic Canadian self-adhesive stamps that are fairly recent. My question is what effective way can I remove these stamps from the booklet without it sticking to my stockbook? I rather trade or sell the others as there are too many so could anyone tell me how I could separate them?

This is not the answer to the question but just my point of view on these self adhesives.

Personally I really do not like them and ended my collection when the fir was introduced. If I were to collect self adhesives I would want them in complete booklets I would be too worried about single stamps becoming detached from the backing during storage and handling. Do you really need to separate these booklets ??

Hey Katchem_ash, like you I have had to deal with this recently. What I have taken to doing is remove the stamps around the ones I am keeping and VERY carefully cut the paper around the stamp being careful not to cut the 'perfs'. Leave the stamp on the backing paper as that will help verify the mint status. The only problem with this is that is gets somewhat expensive for some of our booklets as there are 5 different stamps in a 10 stamp booklet, add in the se-tennant pairs involved and you have quite the number of books to purchase. But, hey... who said the hobby would be cheap right

The only advantage we have right now with these self adhesives is that they are easy to remove from paper once they have been used, unlike other countries where lighter fluid and/or other solutions are needed.

BTW my cousin's husband owns Century Stamp & Coin there... you are a lucky guy to be in Mississauga, I can't get out there all that easy :(

Well I don't have room for them and I have duplicates which I'd rather like to trade with those who would like them. That's why I'd like to break up these booklets.

This give me fear as they are quite close to each other and cutting them might damage the stamp.

Century Stamp & Coin there

It is a quite good store. I was there a couple of years back and brought all of their loose world stamps. I think its time to go back and raid there again.

Hi Ash

This is hard to understand without knowing what the booklets look like & how big they are. Do you really think doing some scanning would destroy them?

On the face of it storing a booklet should take up less room than storing the different individual stamps (& the different se-tenant arrangements?) separately.

Being recent it's likely that some stamps may be worth more fine used than mint, but as mint, the booklet is going to be worth more kept in tact.

From memory the Canadian self adhesive booklets are configuired without borders along the stamps. The stamps are die cut so that one perf line edge forms the perf line of the stamp beside it so there is no way of cutting any stamp with its backing and not damaging the stamps either side.

That's one of the reasons there are about 4,000 variations known of Canadian die cut stamps.

One way though might be to ask for someone to keep used booklets for you. Then take one out of your booklet and put it onto the backing of the empty booklet and then cut it out for your album. At least that way you will be storing it on the backing it came with:D

When the USA switched to entirely self-adhesive stamps, it became "accepted practice" among collectors to cut a stamp from the booklet and keep it on the backing paper. Then printers apparently invented "backingpaper-less" stamps?

For Canadian issues, as Allanswood says, they're often arranged in the booklet with the perfs of the top stamp 'nesting' in the 'holes' of the bottom stamp--no strip of paper in between stamps, as other countries do. One could remove the bottom stamp from the booklet and use as postage, then cut out the top stamp and keep it on the backing paper.

What will happen to self-stick stamps decades from now though is unknown. Will the self-adhesive dry up? Look at the USA's early experiment with self-sticks, that dastardly 10 cent Xmas issue. Mint one's discolour, used ones won't soak off.

You can always buy the Quarterly Packs which contain the stamps from the booklets.

Why not mail a couple letters?

Once you've used a couple of the stamps from the booklet and created some absolutely fabulous modern postal history for your family and friends, you can leave a single in the booklet and just cut the stamp out with the backing paper left on the stamp.

I didn't think the SA stamps were placed in there as individuals.

Yes, that is the only way you can get the single stamps from Canada Post

This is what I have started doing - you get one of each stamp, complete with backing, "die cut" out of the booklets. They are still too thick to put into regular stockbooks, I've been keeping mine in stock sheets with strip pockets that are welded on 3 sides (they tend to fall out of stock pages with strips that are just welded at the bottom).

Another person suggested that I use talcum powder to remove the gum. Obviously this will make the stamp "non-mint". Is there any value of the stamp during trades after the gum has been removed? I would obviously not call them mint anymore correct?

Modern unused stamps will only ever be worth face value. Fine Used, on the other hand...

Some fine used = mint cat. now.

You can purchase modern mint at less than face especialy collector packs.

I keep all modern, Pen canceled, and all used on cover now.

I've been keeping the booklets entire, as this is the safest way to keep the gum and perfs.

I store the booklets in the same 3 pocket sheets used to display bank notes. Uni-safe brand makes them (or has them made); they cost about $6 for 5 sheets. If I want to display the stamps inside, I put them in a page protector in front of a sheet of acid-free cover stock.

A booklet is a collectible item in its self, and keeping all together will likely give you better value later on, and as you say, keeps everything 'mint' beyond dispute.

edit:Just to clarify, I leave the stamps in the booklet when I display them in front of the cover stock. :)
