I've been a member of StampBoards since December 2007, and I must say that this is one of my favourite philatelic sites! I find the folks participating on the board to be helpful and fun.

Being a KGVI collector, I've received some excellent, specialised assistance on many of the questions I have asked. Thank-you, all.

Here's something to discuss...

We are permitted an Avatar on this site. There are all kinds of interesting ones, many of them are stamps from our collections. What is your Avatar, and why did you choose it?

My Avatar is a pre-cancelled 3¢ Mufti. I chose it because:

1. It is my favourite KGVI stamp (and it is Canadian);
2. It paid the domestic letter-rate in its day;
3. It is red & white (our national colours);
4. I really like pre-cancelled Canadian KGVI stamps.

Incidentally, the number for the pre-cancel is the MOON (Money Order Office Number) assigned to the city that it was issued for. I wanted to display a 3¢ Mufti with a 3900 pre-cancel. 3900 is the MOON for Ottawa, where I live.

Unfortunately, there was never a 3¢ Mufti pre-cancelled for Ottawa, so I display the 0700 precancel for my favourite Canadian city, Montréal.

My avatar I use as a link on my web site to the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior, of which I am a member. It was issued by Chile on September 9th, 1974 to celebrate the International Volcanology Congress held in Santiago

My avatar is ½d Green KGV, Lge multi watermark with a crack from the left top to the oval and Kangaroo face. It is from plate 5, left pane, stamp 46. It was purchased cheaply in an estate lot and got me collecting KGV and KGV varieties in particular.

I have had several avatars but keep coming back to this one.

My avatar is the classic half penny green Roo.

I bought this one online after measuring the holes between the perfs using my mouse pointer :)

I determined that there should have been a top row, or at least half of another perforation up the left before a top row. Hence my thinking that it was imperf.

It's a nice stamp IMHO.

I think by now just about everyone nows my Speciality is the New Zealand Penny Universal.

My Avatar shows a copy with mixed perfs i.e. it was originally perfed 14 horizontal but the perfs were misaligned so it was reperfed 11.

For more examples of this weird behaviour and an indepth study on this stamp have a look at my website by clicking the www icon at the end of this post.

Cheers

Mine is the CTO 5/- yellow C of A Watermark

Interestingly had a fake "Vic Aust" cancel applied by a large Melbourne dealer as pointed out by Glen.

As he predicted, turned out to be waterbased and after a short soaking most of the fake cancel seen in the avatar is now gone.

Strange, as it already had a faint cancel on the top right.

My avatar is what I think is the best miniature sheet ever issued. Issued for the 1990 150th anniversary of the Penny Black, it incorporates every element of my thematic interest in Penny Black anniversaries.

Beautifully designed and real eye candy.

I chose my avatar because I think the the Chalons are beautiful stamps.

I also think that the orange shade is a nice variation of the 4d yellow ('tis a shame my copy is SG139 the cheaper unwatermarked variation, rather than SG121).

1. I enjoy stamp collecting but if I had my druthers I would be out in the bush watching birds instead of sitting inside at my computer talking to you guys.

So I have combined the two hobbys.

2. My favourite bird is the Australian Magpie. I have read all the books I can and have watched (not studied) them for about 60 years. Over the last 5 years we have encouraged a magpie family to our yard by (limited) feeding and have watched five families grow.

3. A stamp should be colourful and simple. It should depict its subject clearly. What better example (and avatar) could you have :!:

It's a photo I took of Neve og rose (Fist and Rose), a sculpture by Ola Enstad (1991), in Oslo. I think it should be a stamp. 8)

Glen plugged my avatar into my profile the day I joined, and I have used it ever since.

It seemed appropriate at the time, and still does.

I may change it one day, but then I wouldn't recognise me.

I chose my Avatar because it symbolises one of my main collecting areas.

It is an offset of a German Post-War local issue from Meissen (where the porcelain comes from) in the Soviet Zone.

I collect Soviet Zone issues and the more obscure or wacky the varieties that come up, the better 8)

Several members of Stampboards have informed me that I have got a reversed photo there

My avatar is a scan of a stamp from my Falklands collection:

It's a top 1 pound value from the KGV definitive series, SH #34 / SG #69 / Scott #40.

Printed by De La Rue, it was issued on 13.11.1913 and arrived on the islands on 06.02.1914. Total number printed was 6240, of which 2656 were destroyed in 1929. Therefore, only 3584 stamps could theoretically have survived, both mint and used.

neither my alias nor my avatar have anything to do with stamps

My alias is so called because I am a heavy metal fan (Slayer being one of my fave bands) and my avatar because my football team (and after this season I use the term "football" very loosely) is Derby County

Thank-you to all of you who posted a description of their avatar. It is most intersting to learn why folks chose, what they did, to represent themselves.

My inital avatar was a moving GIF file of Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Carribean wanting to know "where all the rum had gone". It was fun at the time but, being a moving GIF, it was a bit distracting after a while :?

My latest one shows a small Papua overprint of a BNG 2/6 Lakatoi (for obvious reasons) 8)

My avatar is something which got me recognition and some fame  . It is a piece from a cover (found in a mixture) bearing two pairs of the imperforate 10c American Clock stamps.

This picture and an article by Jay Bigalke appeared on the front page of Linn's magazine in December 2005. This is the only known imperforate pair of this particular stamp and has been included in the 2008 Scott catalog after it was shown to Jim Koetzel (Scott's editor) by Jay when I sent him the piece.

I am not giving any thoughts to the monetary value but the fame and recognition that every philatelist seeks came to me through a freakish piece of cover bearing used stamps! Since then I have never thrown or been cursory about checking any mixtures.

Mine is a common Tasmanian pictorial with a good postmark, found on a mixed-up manila stock page. Mostly a reminder to sort those box lots and mixed-up things, as sometimes there ARE goodies in them.

Probably will change it to:

Image

which is a better, more recent "box find".

I chose my avatar because:

- I have been collecting PNG since I was 5 years old (my grandmother had a missionary friend there)

- I also collect the year of my birth (1962) worldwide; and

- In my day to day job I am a "green policeman" - I work for the Environment Protection Authority

When I first joined this board (last Friday) an avatar was automatically assigned. It was the 1/- platypus, a nice enough stamp.

Then in a fit of misguided confidence I tried to change it but only managed to delete it.

I logged on today to find one of my image posts had been inserted. Happy Mark :) :)

I think I'll leave it as it is for the time being. A big thanks to whoever is responsible (Glen?)

By the way it is a 651 cancel which is quite rare, apparently. Further discussion of the Qld numeral cancels is on another thread in this forum.

Cheers to all,
Mark

Took me a couple of weeks to decide but now I can't remember what my first avatar looked like - must be getting old

You're right Sherro that is one of the best ever miniature sheets (at least issued by the UK).

The avatar that i have chosen has all the things that are again outside the stamp, control bars with printer's name, koala reprints and a selvedge.

The added extra is that these are the only gutters that have the reprint koala on the gutter strip that i know of, they are normally in the selvedge.

So it has all my collecting needs all on the one square.

My avatar was chosen for the riot of colour

that represents the various cultures, customs, religions and races in Malaysia

which I truly wish to see in great harmony, peace and beauty,

[despite the enormous diversity.

It was taken from a miniature sheet depicting two RM1 stamps.

I chose the blowfish from among the two of them (had stronger colours).

A stiletto fixation? really? I confess that I have been staring at your ankles ever since I joined. You do realize how indecent and provocative your avatar would have been in the time of Victoria, right?

I chose my avatar because I think the the Chalons are beautiful stamps.

I also think that the orange shade is a nice variation of the 4d yellow ('tis a shame my copy is SG139 the cheaper unwatermarked variation, rather than SG121).

I like your avatar too chaseynz.
As you will see mine is also an NZ stamp and was given to me when I first joined a little over a year ago.
I kept it as I used to go to North Shore stamp meetings when we lived in Milford 25 years ago.
At that time a friend showed me a full double sheet of mint and then put them on the mantelpiece where they had not been removed 2/3 weeks later when we visited again - they were then catalogued at $NZ300.00 each! Cheers, Kev.

Hi all - so why the blue rose?

Well the bit in joining the forum said I HAD to have an avatar and click here to find some free ones. So I did. After looking at pages of junk this one literaly caught my eye. Rare and beautiful and smelly just like me (lol)

But more importantly, I keep it because when scrolling quickly down a thread I can instantly see from the bright blue where the last post I made was and read from there.

I love all the stamps people use as their avatars, but I need to know which one is me! (OK so I am a bit of a me me me person  )

Plus I am a girl and I like things that are pretty. Thats why I have a larger modern collection than pre DC or States; the modern ones are shiny and pretty and I want them all.

My pride and place is a cindarella of the terry pratchet "Discworld" series of which i am a major fan.

However, my current and future avatars are stamps that represent the next attractions to my tutorial of the London Pictorials from South Africa (which i hope to add to this weekend).

Once the tutorials are finished, i shall revert to my favorite. The one penny black of Ankh Morpork, showing the profile of the patrician Lord Vetinari.

My choice for an avatar comes from the cancellation. It is one the most common stamps ever produced but that cancellataion is the best I have ever seen.

It brings together philately and humanity. Whoever wrote that cancellation was doing his job to the best. You would never get anything like that nowadays.

The stamps is common, boring and in bad condition but the cancellation makes it my best stamp.

Alastair.

PS. you don't have to be weird to be into stamps !! :o :o

I'm tempted to ask a "a self portrait ..." of what? - but I don't think I will.
