I struggle with what spare time I have with my two favorite pastimes, so a little bit of both worlds as an avatar.

On 1 February the first of a series of Miniature sheets depicting classic railway locomotives of the UK - see all the details here. My new avatar is the top value of the sheet, an 'Austerity' locomotives built for military service. Before the Normandy Landings, the army had very little use for these locomotives, so they were loaned to the 'Big Four' railway companies. After June 1944, 'Austerity' locomotives were shipped out to France. Eventually British Rail had 733 of these locomotives.

I chose my avatar as it's a 'local' cancelled stamp for me - #8-Portland Vic., it gives me a kick to know this stamp was once on the counter of one of Victoria's oldest P.O's here in Portland (I think we had a 'government building' for a PO before Melbourne even did??) and it's now back here in the same town after all these years? ...PS - how old are these BN stamps?

Pity the big beautiful colonial building that was once our grand PO overlooking the bay.... is now just like every other old building here in town...either a cafe, pub, restaurant or hairdresser

Mine is of a pair of advertisment stamps - my current phase of fancy.

This pair is quite clean and tidy and has the reversed watermark which I picked up for only a few dollars.

I like them because they remind me that bargains can come my way when I'm lucky and give me hope that more luck will come my way :)

I changed my avatar which originally was:

Image

A Postmark from my home town of Kirkcaldy with numeral cancel 210

I've now changed it to this Registration label of Donald, Victoria, as Donald is my Christian name and bought the cover that the registration label is on.

Image

I also bought a cover from Donald, Washington and Donald, Oregon, and am on the lookout for any more !

Hello!
I have chosen a Halfpenny as Avatar.
I chose this one , because my Father was British and left me stamps behind.
This one is in a nice condition, and has the originalgum on the backside.
I have 2 of these. One in plate 20, and the other one i think was 4 or 12.
Although i have so much different stamps here to work with ,i have a little faible for these GB stamps.

With the railway sheet issued today, it's time to turn to the next issue on 24 February, London Stage Musicals.

What can be better, then, in this Mickey-Mouse-Monty-Python world today of so many new stamps, than to go for Spamalot!

Because the stamps in this set are taken from contemporary posters or photos, they seem to be a most disjointed set! Here are some, the rest are on our website.

It is very interesting reading this thread and finding out just a little bit about all of you.

I started out here with this as my avatar:
Image

She is beautifully engraved, mercifully unblemished, and heartbreakingly cut to shape.
And I have a thing for the colors red & orange (if just the right shade).
She was also my guide to Stampboards, as I was doing research on the stamp
when I found you all. I will probably return to her many times.

My current avatar represents my home life. All day long, I am observed by
Junior, Joe, Benny, Twirp, Ginger, Lila, Vegas, and Smokey; the 8 cats that
reside in my household. It is comical how much they look like the cat on this
cancel when I catch them being mischevious.

I will probably change again, as the mood strikes me, so I will put the picture
here for future reference, just in case.

With new stamps coming thick and fast, we move on to the Magical Worlds set issued on 8 March. The avatar now depicts Rincewind, the magician from the Discworld series of books by Terry Pratchett.

Like Marmite, you either luv 'em or just don't get 'em - but I like them (especially, Going Postal!). Rincewind is a failed student at the Unseen University for wizards in Ankh-Morpork, he is reputed for being able to solve minor problems by turning them into major disasters, usually by running away.

My avatar comes from a letter written by Major-General William Stewart. Bathurst is the oldest inland town/city in New South Wales and two of it's streets are William and Stewart.

Stewart was the acting Governor when the first NSW Postal Act was passed in 1825. This was announced in the Sydney Gazette on 19/12/1825 which sweetly coincides with my wedding anniversary (no, I have NOT been married for 185 years  ). The Act fixed the rates of postage in the colony of New South Wales.

Stewart was disliked by the outgoing Governor (Governor Thomas Brisbane) who delayed his retun to England until December 1825. As another sideline, I used to enjoy a whiskey with Brisbane's great grandson !!

This one's a bit of a no-brainer.

It has been said that a woman's work is never done. Now there's a postmark to prove it!

Dear me. The devil is always in the detail. Always! One of these days, I'll alter the date(s) with the infinity sign and "BC", then the same sign and "AD". That should fix it! :)

With new stamp issues coming as quickly as they are my avatar is changing more often than the England World Cup line-up.

However....

Royal Mail is issuing a set of stamps, miniature sheet and prestige stamp book to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of WWF:

Image

So for a while my avatar will be the Siberian Tiger. To see the miniature sheet and poor images of the Prestige Book panes, click on the block above.

:D You won't be able to buy a single tiger stamp.

You can buy the whole set, or the horizontal strip (s) separately. Or you can buy a vertical strip of 5 x tigers (or any others). Their stock code for the tiger is AS672; you may not find it in their eBay shop but it is probably on their website (www.royalmail.com/stamps). Email me if you have a problem. And buy them before 4 April when the price will rise from 41p each to 46p each.

Why not pay norvic to use a few on a real mailed cover addressed to her?

norvic - is the 46p you mention the new domestic letter rate from April 4?

Correct. Airmail rate 20 g to Australia is ÂŁ1.10 so using 2 x Tigers + 18p would be a good franking.

But quite honestly taking PayPal for pennies is not realistic unless all fees are paid. I feel that I am digging deeper by also showing these:

Slightly late in the day, but following google's lead of topicality, my avatar now shows the GB stamp with the formal portrait.

And for all those who want to see less of the Royals, I have some more lined up for subsequent stamp issues! However, this one didn't make the cut as I was too busy leading up to 12th April

My avatar is Lithuanian Water Expo stamp. I have experienced scarcity and walked a kilometre for a bucket of water, almost every other day during my childhood/teenage years. I believe most people do not realize the gravity of the situation that can surface in the next decade. Hence the stamp. :)

My first avatar that isn't pre-40's Great Britain, but I saw this stamp and wanted to make it my avatar as I think it is quite sharp! Nicely timed release tomorrow according to Canada Post, although I have been using them for a couple weeks now!

Here is the Canada Post 100 years of Parks Canada Stamp, followed by the official Canada Post write-up taken from their website:

Image

Canada Post wrote:

So the release date must be an error on the website, or I accidentally got these stamps given to me early? My Friend at the PO did give me the stamps from a box that had just came in, so maybe he jumped the gun a bit on the release of these to me? Super cool if that is the case, it will make Beardmores cover that much more unique!

My avatar was given to me (thanks!) by an admin of the board short time after I registered, simply based on the location I live. As I like this idea, I did not see any reason to change it so far.

My avatar is of a United States 1862 Revenue Stamp.... Scott R21c to be precise. It represents the current top of my want list... although the copy I eventually buy is not likely to be such a nice copy.

These earliest of our proprietary revenue stamps are all tough to find in decent shape... cancelling often meant tearing them in half to open a package.

I chose it because I wanted to avoid the selections of the Avatar Fairy, having perused the board a bit by the time I was authenticated.

It expresses my interest in Revenue stamps, and this series in particular.

I'm sure I'll change it on a regular basis.

My avatar is the Canadian Bluenose Schooner stamp, one of my favorites, and still in my wishlist. Wish to have one in my collection.

I fell in love with the engraving, the color blue, and also after seeing the Canadian Movie - Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveler (1988), in which this Bluenose stamp appears.

Your R21c seems to have disappeared (or not yet been loaded?)

When stamps are the wrong shape for an avatar one can either shrink, distort or crop: I chose to crop the latest one, not only for use here but also on my home page

Well I must be older than I thought, because I CLEARLY remember seeing him give a presentation in Rotherham when I was a boy

Actually, I decided to change my avatar and posting signature quote whenever the color of my "posting star" changed. I didn't expect the change to affect old posts... but it seems it does.

Here is my original Avatar... still on my want list.... bidding in several mail bids and auctions has been unsuccessful it will likely remain on my list for some time.

It was easy for me.. the 1996 Italian Vespa stamp started me on focusing on my narrow topical collection.
It is a work of art.
The picture I picked is a rare variation/error on that stamp. It should have a white border... I am yet to buy this error!

Regards
Gavin

My avatar is a 1902 GB Edward 7th five shilling.

With, I think, a forged overprint trying to turn it into it the very valuable SG 025.

The Exeter parcel cancel, appears to be under the overprint.

For me, its a very interesting stamp. The perfs are not so good, but i like it.

With the advent of a "red star", it's time to change my Avatar and Signature yet again.

This time, my Avatar is based on the only GKC commemorative ever issued, (so far as I am aware anyway).
Image
And my new signature quote is the ever popular -
"An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered; an adventure is an inconvenience rightly considered." - On Running After Ones Hat, All Things Considered, 1908

Just for purposes of record keeping, With a Black star, I switched to use of this Father Brown stamp -
Image
... with which I used the quote-
"If seeds in the black earth can turn into such beautiful roses, what might not the heart of man become in its long journey toward the stars?"

And of course my initial avatar was a copy of the US First Issue Revenue R21c -
Image
which was accompanied by this signature-
"A thing may be too sad to be believed or too wicked to be believed or too good to be believed; but it cannot be too absurd to be believed in this planet of frogs and elephants, of crocodiles and cuttle-fish."

Why do I change... because I can.

I chose this Timor Leste (East Timor) stamp as my avatar because I have just returned from several months there. I liked Timor, and this is my favourite Timor stamp.

I chopped one side of it off because I mistakenly thought the avatars had to be square - 95x95 pixels.

I chopped off the left side with the country name (as opposed to the right hand side) to make people wonder where the stamp was from. Enough of the flag is showing that someone who didn't know but was prepared to try to find out would be able to do so by identifying the flag.

I had this stamp readily at hand. Ever since I joined stampboards I've been thinking about what stamp from my collection is my favourite, that I would most like to use as an avatar. But laziness kicked in, and I've just stuck with my favourite Timor stamp.

A common thought Andrew.

HOWEVER up to 160 x 160 is allowed - indeed we ASK one side be 160.

That 160 is a photobucket standard size option so please re-size it up if you wish. It can be 70% bigger than you now have. :)

Thanks Glen. When I eventually choose a new avatar, I'll be sure to make at least one side 160 pixels.

My avatar depicts my favorite source for wool. I am an avid knitter.

My husband helped me choose and create this avatar.

My Avatar is of the "Eureka" flag which has very strong connections to Ballarat where I have lived for the past 35 years.

Well some members don't mind the Avatar Fairy's choices. :)

Nearly all the ozzie stamp trade were born in Ballarat - do you realise that?
