I found this download

http://www.accountlogon.com/

You store all your logons (username and password) in this utility and access it with a master password. It's made my life a damn sight easier 8)

And it's a bit more secure than using the same username and password for every site you're registered on!

I just use the same one for everything (I hope I don't forget it :? ).

BTW Sherro,

I would have serious doubts about providing login details to a very small company that changes it's registered business address every couple of years:

You should hope that someone doesn't crack your devilishly clever code of the same password for everything!

They do get about a bit, but that's the nature of the beast with small software providers. Good point though

I took a guess at Lakatoi4 and now own Tony's house, car, cat, stamp collection - and his wife is none too pleased about the new sleeping arrangements either. ;)

I was starting up a new account at USPS an hour back .. how is this one for the password:

Minimum 8 characters, at least 1 uppercase, 1 lowercase, and 1 number

How on earth are we to remember seldom used 8 character things that MUST have upper and lower case in the mix??

That's my point precisely. Some sites are six characters, case insensitive, no numbers required. Others are as you describe. I was keeping a password-protected Word doc of all mine.

I forgot the password

Check this one out, I have been using it on my Macs for several years.... (works on Windoze too)

http://www.web-confidential.com/

It's good for passwords, serial numbers etc..

Try remembering your Adobe Photoshop s/no. 24 characters or Speed Download s/no. 128 characters. It's really handy to be able to copy and paste a long s/no. like that..

I could not function without it..

cheers

Steve..

It costs 15 Euro ... how do we know it stays secure?

A piece of paper stuck to my printer works perfectly for me.

Hi,

Personally, I have been using Password Safe ( www.passwordsafe.com ) for years, both at home and at work. It is very small, very easy to use, and free. In fact, you don't even have to know the passwords to use them! You just double click on the appropriate entry and the password is passed to the cat&paste buffer. Then simply move to where the password is to be entered and CTRL-V (or right-click then Paste).

Lakatoi, you can't use the same password for everything because different programs/sites etc. have different rules on what passwords should look like.

Hope this helps,
Alastair

I had a hard-drive crash on my desktop, and lost my password file. As I said above, I then created a word doc, but I must have done a typo or something because I can't open it

I need passwords of different styles for my bank, Paypal, Ancestry.com, stampboards, three football BB's, ebay and the list goes on. I can't possibly remember what's what.

Hi Sherro

I'm with you on this one - with over 220 Passwords, Serial Numbers etc. in my WebConfidential - There is no way I could trust that to Memory or a Paper copy for someone else to get their hands on.

Only one problem that you had - "I had a hard-drive crash on my desktop, and lost my password file." - You just have to Back up and Back up and Back up again... (The current Apples can back up automatically every hour !)

Whatever password storage program you use , it's got to be better than a word doc.

cheers

Steve..

What is this thing called "back-up"??? :?

I've got an 80GB external drive that I now back up to. One crash is all it takes to prompt some action!

I use a program called "Roboform" , I can acess it using a master password but as long as I am the only one who knows it, other users on my computer can't access my details. It can also be set up for multiple identities.

It also means that when I am asked for that pesky 3 digit identity for Visa, it is there and I don't have to find my credit card.

When I access a new site, it takes down my user name and the password for that site. There are two ways that I can use it, go to Roboform passcards and click on the site I want and it will go off and connect and sign in,,,,or I can go to the site and when the signin comes up, it flashes for the master password and then signs in....if the correct master password is given.
I can also use it to automatically fill in forms, using the details I have filled in previously.

Yes I know Alastair, I was just letting it fly to see what happened

My passwords are mainly variations of the same base (not birthdate or name related) and is a 7 letter/digit alphanumeric.

Sometimes software just can't handle what you throw at it such as only allowing numbers or only letters and that's a real pain. Some bank access coding will even generate a random password and not let you change it :!:

Then there is access that requires changing annually, even more of a pain :!:

As a sideline to my post above, has anyone noticed the newish high security being added to access online bank accounts :?:

I know of two that require you to:

1. Input your account number.

2. Then input your security code

3. Then input either your date of birth or answer one of three pre-programmed questions (both of these are via a software keypad and not just typed in).

What will they think of next, perhaps fingerprint or retina scans :?:

I'm continually amazed when speaking with people who refuse to do anything online. Tabloid TV shows, that spread paranoia about identity theft and credit card fraud, have a lot to answer for.

I know one person who constantly complains and moans about having to go to the bank to deposit money, the post office to pay all the bills (  ) etc etc , yet refuses to use online banking because "it's not safe".
