Okay Lakatoi 4,

Here's to start that thread on anything philatelic that is 100 years or older before they totally disintegrate and disappear from the face of the earth.

These are the Denmark 1875 SG 81 (4ore blue and grey) which catalogue for £0.20 each used (Simplified SG catalogue 2004)

Image

Followed by the 1904 French Guinea SG (2004 Catalogue) No. 18 (worth £0.35 each used)

Image

And finally my pathetic looking lot of Spanish 1872 SG No. 197 that catalogues for £0.25 each used (2004 SG Simplified Catalogue).

Image

Hope I identified the stamps correctly (if wrong please correct me, anyone).

Andrew

Harrydebruin,
Nice looking German stamps there especially the first set of Germany. Can you shed some light on the German Army of Occupation stamp? Thanks.

From SG Germany Cat

These stamps were used during the occupation of France by the German Army in the war of 1870-71 and afterwards in the annexes provinces of Alsace and Lorraine. Later they were superseded by stamp of the German Empire.

Thanks Harry,

I looked at that chart that you showed on the German stamps thread and can see where these stamps will fit. No wonder Germany is such a popular country to collect. We learned a bit of the older German history in school and it does bring back some memories looking at that chart with some names of the old German States. Also brings back memories of my history teacher and the maps of Germany with its older states that we used to draw in class.

Brought back some nostalgia for awhile just now. Thanks.
Andrew

The chart is slightly incorrect on these issues.

The mail that the Alsace-Lorraine stamps were used for was carried under the auspices of the North German Postal Confederation, so there should really be a line from Alsace-Lorraine to there.

Only a minor point - in general that is a VERY useful chart, Harry!

Yes the chart does have errors. There's also some stuff missing.

I think the chart is based around the simplified SG cat.

...and if you started trying to tie in all the Occupation Locals and multiple authorities within the Russian Zone, it'd soon become unreadable.

It's a VERY useful chart for giving an understanding of a complex area.

The designs were the result of a nationwide competition.
Resulting in quite a change from the earlier Queen Victoria issues.

Nice set tho. :)

Here is one nearly as colourful from the similar era, from my Rarity page

South Australia Set to £1 with FEDERAL period Federal MP Presentation Cancels: Bright fresh set as you can see of most eye catching appearance. A couple with light horiz bends, but visually unbeatable for this tough group, with cancels all in same quadrant! The FEDERAL MP's of the new Commonwealth got a set of all the state stamps to £1 in 1910, and only a few dozen sets were prepared for this use, and attract a large premium over state period CTO. $A325

I have the scanner, did some test runs, but to no avail,
"I have thrown the toys from the cot" so to speak.

Those Colourful South Australian Postage and revenue stamps are Very similar to our NZ ones. Took me by surprise.

For over 100 years old they're looking really good.

Yes, those are a really nice looking set and well kept. They will probably be around for yet another 100 years.

Iomoon,

Was that to commemorate the eruption of Ruapehu?

Cheers

From a slightly earlier source:

By H. Hill, B.A., F.G.S.

[Read before the Hawke's Bay Philosophical Institute, 15th July, 1895.]

The eruption of Ruapehu on the 10th March of this year has opened up an interesting question as to what is likely to be the future of this mountain: Is it to become dormant and finally extinct, or will it be seen again as an active volcano similar to what it was in times which may be counted by the century? The last time when the mountain displayed signs of increasing activity was on the 1st May, 1889.

It is only within the last decade that Ruapehu has come to be looked upon as a mountain whose life is not yet over. Tongariro and Ngauruhoe were known to be active volcanoes, because clouds of steam could be seen rising from them at a distance of fifty miles in the direction of Taupo and the Kaingaroa Plains. When Hochstetter, the famous geologist, was at Tokaanu in 1859 he appears to have made the fullest inquiries from the natives concerning the volcanic group to the southward, although he was forbidden to visit or even to approach any portion of the group.

Bidwill and Dyson, in 1839 and 1851 respectively, had secretly visited portions of the group, and their published accounts had no doubt fired Hochstetter with a desire to see what was, at that time, looked upon as the only spot where volcanic phenomena could be studied on a large scale in this country. Of Ruapehu, however, nothing was then known, except that native tradition said it was the abode of an evil spirit, Te Ririo, who caused men and women to wander hither and thither over the mountain until bereft of their reason. The fearsome and solitary surroundings in the eyes of an imaginative people caused this mountain to be viewed with awe and dread, and nothing was remembered concerning it beyond the fact that it was the abode of an energy or a cause which brought about injury to humankind.

Does this not suggest that the mountain was a centre of danger owing to the frequency of explosion? Hochstetter says, in his great work on New Zealand, page 378, "No one has ever ascended Ruapehu or explored it. Nevertheless, there can be no doubt as to its volcanic nature; but it seems perfectly extinct—there is no trace of a solfatara to be discovered in the distance either at its sides or at the top, and it is totally unknown whether the broad summit forms a plateau or whether it contains a crater."

While we are on the subject of New Zealand, can someone post of a pair showing the carmine red verses the lake colored image of the 1d White Terrace of 1900 at Rotomahana.

I'm not sure I have a lake version of the lake!

Here are some 1d. White Terraces from my NZ collection that may be of help - Two Crimson, Rose Red, & what I suspect is some sort of aniline printing as the colour shows right through the stamp. Some advice on this one would be welcomed  :

Stamper,

The SG NZ specialised lists only three colours, i.e. crimson, rose-red & lake.

A very old Campbell Patterson edited catalogue I have lists lake, deep crimson-lake, crimson, & rose-red (shades). I take this as the more definitive colour range than the SG catalogue.

Perhaps it's the deep crimson-lake printing?

Hi Lakatoi
That info is from the latest 2007 revised C.P. pages
We really need to see all 4 colours in a single shot to compare.
Lake crimson and Deep lake crimson probably have very subtle differences.

Try this lot guys. These are of Universals but will give you a good idea of the Lake shades. They have quite a distinctive blackish colour to them.

Image

I will break out my 1d Terraces over the weekend and scan those for you as well but the Lake shades are the same as the Universals.

Cheers

IO

Finally broke these out of my safe today and scanned them for you.

Image

Here they are side by side

Image

The Lake-Crimson has quite a lot of blue to it whereas the Deep Crimson Lake is more of a deep Red and quite a lot less blue in nature to the Lake Crimson.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Roly

Hi Jim

No it is not easy and I have another disadvantage in that like about 40% of males I have a little problem with reds. So my wife gets the shades sorting to do :)

My red deficiency is not enough to stop me from maintaining my pilots licience so I am not too concerned about it :)

The examples I have shown have all been authenticated so they are indeed the colours you should be looking for. The caveat of course is that not all Screens are created equal and not all scanners represent 100% accurately.

I guess the best clue I can give is that the Lake Crimson (Campbell Patterson E3a(3) ) has a distinctive bluish tinge whereas the Deep Crimson Lake (Campbell Patterson E3a(4) ) has no blue overtones at all and is very definately a deep red based colour.

The other rider of course is that the Deep Crimson Lake is quite a rare beast to come across (refected in the CV being $400 for the example shown in my previous posting as opposed to $2.50 for the others) so the odds of turning one up on a random basis are not good :(

Cheers, glad to help............ next :)

Roly

I guess as long as you don't see red as green, it's safe to fly a plane (and drive a car).

Ahhh Glen This is not a serious collection of NZ 1d Universals then? :)

Tongue-in-cheek of course.

You are right though, that is why my wife is brought into play when it comes to shade variations .....

Cheers

PS. More than willing to clear out your stock of Universals, particularly any on cover :)

You are a tough man to please Glen when there are at least 21 Perf variants throughout the site, ALL papers are covered in detail, ALL plates are covered in detail and ALL watermarks are covered in detail with detailed scans. Ohh.... did I mention ALL shades for most plates/printings are illustrated as well.

That is not to mention the detailed flow chart to clearly identify examples in this series etc.

Methinks you are jerking my chain if you seriously think this is only "a good start" :) Can you point me to any other site that is further advanced for this stamp?

Cheers

Here are the NZ 1882 QV fiscals that reminded me of the Australian ones Glen showed a few posts back.
The embossing and crown franking on the used pound would have been be for Law courts or Land deed document fees.

This is a nice simple site on the 1d Universal.

None of that great detail. Easy to follow. ;)

This is a set of 1890 NZ Railway Newspaper Stamps but not the full set as it is missing the 3d Green-Yellow, but it does have the very rare 3d Brown which I am told is selling for well over $1000.

Perhaps you can verify that for me Rory. Also have you seen the flaws of the 1d Dominion I posted in Variaties plus the strip of 3 First Day of Issue 1d Universals

I posted on this site somewhere

I think in the 4d Shades thread I started by mistake..I also have two single's with First day of Issue postmsarks which I will post here for you soon.I am hoping for your opinion on them

You can check catalogue values for your Railways HERE

You can pick them up for much lower than this from time to time on various auction sites.

Here's a nice old stamp, Victoria Scott #30 SG #73 (printed in 1854, released in 1858):

You have to wonder why they bothered rouletting these, when drunks could cut up imperfs closer to on-center than this. [Still, it's hard to find one of these mint.]

New Brunswick 1851 1/- Dull Violet Mauve - clean FU with 4 margins: Neat cross hatch pen postal cancel. Which Robson Lowe classes as "rare" - saying most have over the past century have been cleaned off to give the illusion of "unused". Unused stamps of course have a far higher catalogue value - which is many times greater on this stamp. A lively discussion on this very stamp is here -

Clean and fresh, with absolutely crisp proof-like impression, and in quite delightful condition for something over 150 years old.
