Allan,

I think it's a good idea that foreign postmarks on GB stamps should be listed but in a different category. :D

You might want to look at these threads, there are quite a few that could be added:

Totally agree. Primary cancellations only ... :)

Cool! Typed in "ist" (As those three letters are the only ones legible on that Dutch cancelled stamp, and indeed it took me to "Zeist". Had to wade through an ocean of Bristol first though... )

I have been thinking about this problem with long lists from some letter combinations - with the main problem area being the main search box at the top.

In an attempt to make things a little easier for those searching - there are now a series of filter buttons at the top of the table that will cut down the number of returned results based on the option selected. These relate to the main periods / reigns.

PLEASE NOTE that if you select one of the reigns - then you will not see the entries which have no illustration. These only appear in the list of all entries.

I hope this helps ....

Can someone please decipher this postmark?

I've tried Westminster, Whitford, Windermere plus tried to work out the street to no avail.

Group of three then individual scans.

Sender's address is 180 Fleet Steet London as at 6 January 1975.

Hello Tallanent

Is there a listing of

1.. What you have?

or

2.. What you don't have?

I'm cataloguing 8,000+ covers and many are from GB.

Maybe I have a few that could add to the database.

The listing of all the recorded items that I have to this point is the database.

This would mean checking the listings for each mark or a group with similar letters ...

bazza4338 wrote:

There is, (at this time), 3,932 British marks listed for which I still do not have an illustration.

The following link will pull up the full listing of these items

http://www.philatelicweb.com/pmks/search6.php

This is also linked from the main page

Looking forward to anything you can add to the information :D

Another of those foreign marks on British stamps  which is now listed as per the text at the base of the anchor "Hazanak Hazanal"

Thanks for the link with all the details - from which I made a group picture to show all the information.

Everything else to this point also listed ...

This reads W 7 - which I believe is the Hanwell duplex from West London

Not 16 --- to much space - there would be another numeral at the front

Without the CDS sections to insert all the correct details - these can not be added ... Sorry :(

Bazza, I think that Gerrards Cross is a franking machine marking, not a post office one. Very clear, though!

Contributions from me:

Baltasound, Unst, Shetland, * code, 6AU65
Image

The same datestamp without the *, 22OC84
Image

I can do a few other Shetland marks as time permits, any use?

Probably Letterkenny. Burtonport (Ailt an Chorráin or Ailt a' Chorráin) is in County Donegal, of which Letterkenny is the chief town.

Yes, the Burton Port text is Letterkenny - confirmed by my copy of Post Offices in the UK, which also includes all the Irish offices.

Some more Shetland:

Baltasound, Unst, Shetland single circle cds, 8FE75
Image

Now Haroldswick, Unst, Shetland. Until it closed this was the UK's most northerly post office.

First, the regular circular datestamp, 21FE79, no code but I also have it used in January 1969 with star code at top.
Image

There were at least five different special cancels used at Haroldswick. These were probably made of rubber and did not last long in service.

1JY72, I also have this one used 18NO74 and 1MY75.

Lastly for tonight, the third PO on Unst:

Uyeasound, Unst, Shetland, 4MR83 with no code; I have the same postmark from 14JA75 with star code at top.

Hi Bazza

I hope you will excuse me jumping in, but that Nuneaton postmark is part of a machine cancel. I think Allan likes to record these together with the rest of the cancel, which will be either wavy lines or a slogan.

Hi Allan,

Just trying to fill in a few gaps. Here is the Alton (11) numeral with a separate Alton datestamp for 11 Sep 1845 - also has a Farringdon Hants, undated circle.

Image

As you know, my interest is in the early numerals (i.e. before the duplexes were introduced). For these, I presume would prefer scans that include both marks (like the one above), but if not available are examples like this (7 Crich) of use (until something better comes along) ?

Image

I thought I would ask first, before flooding you !

Chris.

As you know, my interest is in the early numerals (i.e. before the duplexes were introduced). For these, I presume would prefer scans that include both marks (like the one above), but if not available are examples like this (7 Crich) of use (until something better comes along) ?

I thought I would ask first, before flooding you !

Chris.

Chris ...

Examples with the CDS on piece or cover are always better as they give the date of use. However a clear numeral such as the (7) that you show is useful - and the dates can be added later as they surface.

Everything to this point is now listed ...

Thanks for the confirmation, Allan. I will start with the ones with the numeral and datestamp on the same cover/piece first.

Ahoj CMJ!

Some nice early covers you have!

Ahoj Allan!

A few odds and ends I have come across.

First though I noticed a typo in REF 277 Natal.

1 DUNDEE A Centre of Industry - the year is unclear but Parsons & Pearson give its use from 1 June 1964 to 32 May 1966

2 FIELD POST OFFICE 741

Image

3 ARMY SIGNALS on same cover as above but dated two days later

Image

4 TAUNTON SOMERSET 1 7 wavy lines

Image

5 CARLISLE CUMBERLAND packet cancellation

Cheers,

Honza
