Hi!

I picked this one up recently with an added 1cent on a pre-stamped 5cent letter card.

You know what bothers me about this letter card? Why did they print the card with 'price:six cents' but the stamp they printed was a 5 cent stamp requiring then to add a 1 cent postage stamp to make up the difference. Why didn't they just print a 6 cent?

Does this seem strange to anyone else or should I head for the strong coffee?

Good question.

These always cost the 1 cent over face - for convenience - i.e. 6c bought the 5c card.

Same way a 60c PSE at our POs today cost 65 or 70c or whatever - a convenience loading!

I see a ton of these with 1d stamp added when rate went up to 6c circa 1970.

Value $1 retail on a VERY good day.

The 1 cent bought the card, the 5 cent paid the postage.
Thus the preprinted card cost 6c.

They must have printed millions of them?
