Ahoj everyone!

There are several threads on Stampboards dealing with WW1 from the Allied side, but I have not found one from the side of the Central Powers.

One thing you can collect are the different Field Post Office numbers like this one FPO 64

Image

and this one from FPO 103

Image

If you come across a postmark that is not very clear, you can always check it out against the sender's address on the left.

The K. u. K. at the beginning stands for Kaiserlich und Königlich (i.e. imperial and royal) because Austria was an Empire and Hungary a Kingdom. This K.u.K. readily identifies a lot of Austro-Hungarian material.

The Hungarians also had a range of Field Post Offices of a different type. This is FPO 92.

Image

You will notice these have Tábori Postahivatal instead of Feldpostamt and the date has the year first with only the last three numbers.

Something new for you to collect perhaps?

Cheers

Honza

Ahoj bazza!

Thanks for posting those nice three cards with their scenes of nostalgia and Gemütlichkeit.

I particularly liked the clarity of the unit cachet on the first one to Prague.

Then the card to the butcher's daughter from someone serving in the army slaughterhouse sounds as if the sender may have been in that trade before being called up.

Insights into a world almost 100 years ago when the political and social conventions were about to be changed for ever.

Cheers,

Honza

Ahoj bazza!

Of course it is fine to post anything to do with WW1 from the Austro-Hungarian perspective. I look forward to seeing them!

I'll get back to you tomorrow on the translation unless someone beats me to it.

There is a Film Festival on at the moment and I am planning to watch three films to-day!!! so I have to go.

Cheers,

Honza

Ahoj bazza!

Sorry for the delay. I'll do my best with your translation.

Your card is addressed to the Chief Medical Officer at the k.u.k Army High Command FPO 51.

On the other side:

Rank: Ra (not sure of this rank) in the Medical? Reserve
Name: Dr. Franz Klauber
Regular Unit: KuK Landeswehr Infantry Regiment No 24
Present Detail: KuK Reserve Hospital Stryj (now in Ukraine)
FPO Number FPO 514
I'm not sure of the last line. I think it means the FPO number is valid until 2nd December 1916

Hope that helps,

Cheers,

Honza

Ahoj again!

If the different Field Post Offices don't appeal to you, you can collect the different cachets for the different military units.

Some of these can be quite short and cryptic like this one:

Image

K. u. K. Infantry Regiment 75

or longer and more expansive like this one:

Image

K. u. k. Infantry Regiment, Johann Georg, Prince of Saxony No.11 Field Company.

Some come in rings with an emblem in the centre like this for Mine-launcher Company No. 421.

Image

or a faint Engineers Headquarters in Krakau (now Poland).

Image

Whatever rocks your boat. There is a useful list of regiments at this site.

Woops!

I think the mine-launcher cachet in my last post was German rather than Austrian.

Sorry

Ahoj again!

Breaking cover after the green slime.

When we think of little land-locked Austria, we tend to forget that it once boasted a formidable Navy with Dreadnoughts based in Pula (now Croatia) and Trieste (now Italy).

Here is a censored cover with a k.u.k. Marinefeldpostamt PULA strike sent to Bohemia.

It's a bit blurred, but gives you a goal to find something better.

Honza

Ahoj bazza!

Thank you for that link. It wasn't known to me .

This is a card that seems quite ordinary.

Image

It dates from 7th December 1914, the first year of the war.

It is from a serving soldier so goes unstamped and has the cachet of the K.u.k. Infanterieregiment Graf von Khevenhüller Nr.7 3 Ersatzkompagnie.

This was a Carinthian regiment and the card was posted in Klagenfurt (the capital of Carinthia). The soldier has written Celovec which is the Slovenian name for Klagenfurt.

The postmark appears to be a civilian wavy line type.

What I find interesting and surprising, however, is that the picture side is of the New Forest in England!

Cheers,

Honza

Ahoj again!

Here is a slightly clearer scan of the PULA navy postmark that I showed above.

Image.

Staying with the Navy, here is a dog of a card with a postmark from one of Austria's Dreadnoughts the S.M.S TEGETTHOFF.

Image

It has Fröhliche Weihnachten at the top left - Happy Christmas.

The other side is badly scraped. but shows a propaganda image of a valiant sailor.

Image

Interesting despite its condition.

Cheers,

Honza

Ahoj again!

Sometimes you come across WW1 cards that have a photograph of the troops.

This one I think is a Bosnian unit.

Image

This next one I really like, because the photograph is fresh and clear. It also gets away from military units in rows and shows two soldiers relaxing by a stream with two boys.

Image

What a pity there was no photography at the time of the Napoleonic Wars.

Cheers,

Honza

Ahoj everyone!

Here is a card cent to Bohemia from TIVAT in Montenegro in 1915.

There is a very faint violet unit cachet which I think is from the 5th K.u.k. Infantry Regiment "Freiherr von Klobučar" (Hungarian).

I presume the word under ZENSURIRT also means censored, but in what language? Is it Cyrillic lettering?

Ahoj there again!

Another avenue you can go down is cachets to do with hospitals.

A military hospital attached to a University

A Field Hospital with a black boxed Von der Armee im Felde = From the Army in the Field

A censored card from a Recovery Hospital
