Drh,

Time for you to start a thread of your own instead of sabatoging this one with your snide opinions. There are plenty of souvenir sheets worth good money; there are plenty that are worthless (huh...sounds like stamps!) The beauty of it is that everyone can collect what they like. I like 'em; you don't.

All you've done from the get go is make deprecating remarks about SS but you've yet to make a positive contribution to this thread.

Do me a favor...go lurk on some other thread.

Well, here's some nice Canadian ones for you, all on really big envelopes so I've cropped them a bit! They are all from a friend of ours who has always used these kind of sheets on his mail! Usually loaded with photos and all sorts of things, so does that make them commercial or philatelic? That always does tend to confuse me!!

I'm not keen on FDC or Souvenir Sheets; I think they are out there for commercial purposes. But it is Timbres choice if he wants to collect them just as I collect say machins and I could probably be accused of wasting money on those. And I have to say some of the souvenir sheets on this thread are beautiful.

Sure M/S (S/S) are obviously largely targeting collectors. If the clerk at the counter hands one of these to a 'normal' customer (assuming the PO actually has any in stock :!:) the customer will probably either a) tear the stamps out, treating the margins as selvedge on sheet stamps or b) complain they don't want it and will take a boring defin. Who wants to lick that 'giant' thing on an envelope--and most envelopes won't accommodate them, if the address is applied dead-centre as people are apt to do.

But, a M/S allows for lots of design beyond the stamp. Look at the Will&Kat M/S above, the M/S takes things well beyond the standard portrait to give a majestic view of the cathedral. For the countries I collect, I take everything--M/S, imperfs, eprevues deluxe. OK, I draw the line at the silly gold foil issues of mid-70s Cambodia.

When I first moved to HK I soon saw that stamps were allowed on the reverse of envelopes, and that made life so much easier when using M/S or plate blocks. :D

Hutch,

Do you like them? If you don't, you know where you can send them??

If you look at Norvic's earlier comment on this thread you will see where he provides the "general consensus" of what is commercial vs philatelic. As for commercial usage or not; here's my opinion (and many others will have there own veiwpoint):

1) FDC is typically philatelic, as it is usually a cover that has been cancelled but NEVER done postal service. Who would ever spend money on a stamp just to cancel it? A collector!! No service = philatelic.

There ARE commercial FDC. It is usually non-assuming cover, with a simple cancellation. But if it is cancelled on the day it was issued, it's an FDC. I also have some FDC in my collection that did see postal service commercially and were placed in a cachet envelope...maybe that's just what the PO sold the customer. The sender didn't care; they just needed an envelope and it happened to be the FDC cachet which they mailed on the FDI.

2) Some purists state that if it is a letter from one collector to another, then it's philatelic. Hogwash in my opinion. So what's a collector to do; have all his mail sent through a 3rd party? Totally ridiculous. Again, if it does postal service, it's commercial.

2a) I WILL concede that such covers can be contrived, and I do eschew contrived covers. But I won't toss them. They become contrived when: i) franking is not correct; ii) cover is plastered with many different issues or with iii) a "theme" or some such. But I hasten to say, this is my opinion. And even still, such covers have garnered a pretty shiny penny years later when it is a rarer set.

At the end of the day, collect whatever makes you happy. To each his own (so said the old lady as she kissed the cow); or different stokes for different folks, etc., etc., etc.

Happy collecting!

Ahhh, but the "bottom" of the mini-sheet is nicely canceled!!! He was just trying to make it look pretty!

Maybe the postal worker is a royalist and didn't want deface the stamps?

True though, the actual stamps should have been cancelled correctly but as they are on cover and will remain that way maybe it's a moot point!

hutch

PS, I'll keep you in mind when I finally decide to "downsize" Timbres!

Thank you Aethelwulf for the 150th Anniversary of Queen's College SS from Hong Kong:

And to fulfill the franking needed, these stamps on the back of the cover:

Nice thread if one ignores the snide remarks in here

We are all collectors and the OP as well as others are collecting what they enjoy! Me I personally wouldn't use any of my S/S (I know M/S is supposed to be the same thing, but what does the M stand for anyway) but to each their own. Our hobby as old as it is still evolves. What with self adhesives (like them or not they are here to stay), the sheets discussed here, and other changes it leads to new and interesting changes and discoveries. Just this weekend I grabbed my copy of the 2012 Unitrade catalogue, and the variants that are coming out even on some of the new self adhesive stuff is almost mind boggling.

GreenGo has again provided a wonderful SS from Slovenia and in his letter has given the background and history of this little gem which certainly add to the interest. Here are some of the highlights:

70th Anniversary of the barbed wired fence around Ljubljana

The war had already been raging for a year and a half in Europe when in April, 1941, Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy attacked our homeland, occupied it, and partitioned it. When the Italian occupying forces realised that Ljubljana was the centre of the resistance movement, they drew up a plan to separate the city from the other areas of occupied Slovenia and in this way frustrate the liberation movement.

In late January 1942 they began to enclose the city of Ljubljana behind a barrier of barbed wire. A wire fence about two meters high was strung around the city and several fortifications and guardhouses were built. By the end of May, the barrier surrounded the entire city. Only individuals in possession of special permits were allowed to enter and leave the city through one of 11 checkpoints on the main roads.

Ljubljana was destined to remain an enormous, enclosed camp until it was liberated on 9th May 1945. Only then was the wire removed and the bunkers demolished.

The wire fence was replaced by trees, which today surround the city like a green ring. Today the line of fence has become "The Path of Memories and Comradeship," a unique historical monument, which at the same time, is a monument of landscaped nature and Ljubljana's largest green recreation area.

Image

A popular event known as "The March along the Wire" is held every year on Liberation Day.

GreenGo also printed Ljubljana's Coat of Arms as a cachet on the cover.

Thank you very much GreenGo, for the SS and the story behind it! I like it very much.

A recent eBay purchase came in this:

Image

The miniature sheet commemorates the protection of the polar regions and glaciers and was issued on 27 March 2009.

I think 10 kuna is the correct rate (I checked from Croatia Post's postage rate list: http://www.posta.hr/UserDocsimages/cjen ... 01.pdf.pdf).

Germany issues one of these pretty much every year "For the Children." This is one I received as commercial mail (note the glassine window envelope) when I lived in Germany. I think this was a 1997 issue.

I try to use souvenir sheets every time I write to my sister, and beg her bring them back. So I have many of them. Here are some spanish sheets:

Image

Image

Image

It was hard to find a big enough envelope for this one:

Image

My sister makes the same, here are some argentinien she sent:

Image

Image

Image

But sometimes she is too much "pragmatical" (is a woman) and sends the stamp in the envelope, and the rest of the souvenir sheet inside!!!!

Image

That's why it appears in my album like this, only the stamp canceled.

Very nice Willie.

I like to keep my on the cover, but that's just my preference. The ones you have scanned are beautiful.

Something from an earlier time period.
Don't much care whether it is commercially used or philatelic - I like it all the same.

Seeing what looks like an address crammed down in the very bottom, it's probably philatelic, but I like it too!

Many thanks, you're very kind.
I understand Timbres prefers to keep the whole envelope, but not me.
I know my sister goes to the post office, make my 7 years old nephew choose the stamps, fix them in the envelope and send it to me. They were postaly used, and that's enough reason to fix them in my album. I don't need or care about the envelope, and appreciate every one of them. Here are some more:

Brian & Ken:

Both of you have some lovely covers with multiple SS! Very nice. I am envious

So do you specifically seek to collect SS on cover or are these some you just happened to pick up along the journey and are holding on to them?

Timbres

Hi Timbres
Mine came in a box lot I purchased from Glen. They are just extras, as those particular covers are not from a country I collect
Now if they had been from PNG .

Well Brian, if I had something from PNG to trade for them I'd relieve you of your caretaker burden :D

They aren't the only ones. Australia Post are good at that too - or worse, the dreaded black texta!

This is not a mini-sheet or souvenir sheet, it's a pane from a prestige stamp book - the same stamps were issued in a mini-sheet but that's not it. (Is that a recent posting? - it doesn't seem to be a current rate.)

Hi Norvic
It's not recent , several years old at least ,can't even remember what came in it.The customs form on the back is signed but not dated.

Yes Norvic, you're right of course. No one seems to really no what a SS is these days. Hopefully this thread will help correct that. :D

Here's the recent Calgary Stampede SS kindly sent by AMark:

For his trouble, he will receive a cachet with my artwork that matches the stamp on the cover....maybe I should put some of them on offer on the "swap" board to get some more SS.

Here's one just received from jennys in exchange for the cover "Celebrating the Amish" I created to match the new US international postage stamp (Here it is if you're interested: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=35584&p=2788438&hilit=amish#p2612789).

But before I post it; just one thing....to me, this is a most disjointed SS. Why would someone slap a set of fish on the image of the Grand Palace? WHAT???? :? :? Talk about a non-sequitur. I'm not used to seeing this kind of thing from Australia. I expect it from countries that depend on stamps to make money so they throw every kind of topic on one stamp/SS just to generate more sales. But this just doesn't look good to me. There's no context at all, which makes it kind of ugly, really. Can anyone explain this? In my mind, they could have take the lovely picture of the Grand Palace and perforated four stamps on it and left the fish in the sea where they belong, instead of laying out there on the Grand Palace yard. That would have looked much nicer in my mind.

Okay, rant over...here it is:
