David .. the lowest one of the 3 URL's that photobucket gives you has the html tabs already in place so pasting that link here is all we need to do.

photobucket for a board like this is a godsend. It took me about a minute to save your scan, crop it at top, load it to photobucket and paste here.

Simon Dunkerley and I (and others) had a discussion somewhere else here about such cosmetic trimming and we both prefer it in cases like this. But I know many collectors do not. Very much a personal choice thing. :)

In this case my main concern for a local collector would be that the obvious foxing along top margin will spread to other stamps stored in the same album/stockbook, in this climate.

Glen, thanks,

you are near the harbour, I am up in the Hills district, no problems up here with humidity. You live near the water, you got the views but you also get the problems associated with it,

Our main problem is the bloody tolls, it costs me almost $10 each way to go to the city,

Glen,

I would cut the top square as you say. IMHO it does nothing for these stamps on piece to leave this tattiness on the top.

Bonny River is indeed one of the Oil Rivers in the Niger Coast Protectorate.

Another cancel from German New Guinea with Kaewieng cancel (hard to get this size cancel with all details visible):

Nice cancel Laka. 8)

Legible cancels on a lot of these German colonies are difficult to find - especially from outside the "capital" cities...

Hi, Thomas,

The German one there with the slogan "Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Fuhrer/ 10 April 1938" was issued to "celebrate" the Anschluss which was the formal union of Germany and Austria - in reality, of course, the Nazis simply absorbed Austria within what they called the "Greater Germany"...

That stamp was issued in two different formats - slightly different sizes/different perfs. One printed in Berlin, one in Vienna.

The Swedish one is the only one I can pass judgement on. Assuming the perfs. are OK (can't tell as you've cut them off in the scan ) and there are no faults then it is a relatively nice item. Facit # 45 (assuming it has a blue posthorn on the back, they were issued from 1886 to 1891, so more than likely) and from the date probably the 'd' shade (dull rose on yellowish paper). This is a very common Swedish stamp (print run 174 million), and the cancel is likewise common (Katrineholm is a moderate size town near Stockholm), but it is struck very nicely.

Here is a very similar item, slightly different shade, but no rarer, but with an even more common cancel. It was offered at the latest Philea auction, starting price 250,- SEK (about AUS$50). It didn't sell, but that price isn't too outrageous. Nothing much sells this time of year given it is high summer in Sweden.

Starling beat me too it .. I was going to point out that with decent perfs and centring that otherwise very common stamp with such a gloriously struck cancel is about a $50 stamp in Sweden!

Scott knows this better than me, but I'd rate the Katrineholm strike as near unbeatable in crispness and "uprightedness"!

Looking at it in its full glory, that Swedish stamp might have a few too many nibbled perfs. to shoot into the $50 range. Centering is slightly off in the vertical axis and the cancel is also a few millimetres too far left.

Still it rises above the pennies range that the catalogue values would suggest (it is Scott # 45a - but that would be a meaningless catalogue number to anyone who'd be interested in it, better to go with the Facit # 45d). Maybe more like $10 if you offered it through Ebay (but only during the Northern autumn/winter - Sweden is closed for business until September as they take advantage of their short summer). But who knows, once the Swedes see a cancel that takes their fancy there's no stopping them.

thomasgun esq.

Thanks for the thought in you post above (just gotta luv the lakatoi's). To get the full stamp with perfs. the following is really simple & works brilliantly for me:

Scan at 300 dpi with a black background (back of a hagner/piece of black cardboard).

After scanning I then use the Microsoft Office Picture Manager which is really simple and quick. You can enhance the item scanned (autocorrect), rotate it, resize, compress, colour change, correct brightness & contrast and from your point of view really easily crop the image. Sure if I wanted the "bells & whistles" I would use a more upmarket program (which I have)but this works well for modifying a scan and uploading to photobucket.

Maritimes-Alpes is merely the name of one of the French provinces, in this case, between the Riviera and the Italian border, basically.

I've been to the city of Menton, that's where we stayed when we went to the Monaco Grand Prix in 1969. My fractured French had them rolling in the aisles. Imagine someone whose classroom experience is German and Spanish, trying to pronounce French; I knew a lot of words, but they didn't come out right LOL.

Can't be as bad as mine. While in Nice, I tried to order a passionfruit icecream from a street vendor. Somehow passionfruit (fruit de la passion or some such) came out of my mouth as seafood (fruit de la mare).

My brother once tried to say "I hope so" (je l'aspere) but instead managed to say "I am an asparagus" (je suis un asperge).

All French in this post is likely garbled!

Here's something on-topic:

iomoon,

You will probably find that the things with weird sounding names have been done so using traditional aboriginal words. Other than that we tend to name things after fanous english people in history and/or Australians.

Traditional aboriginal name:

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

There is a fault with an even longer name in New England but I can't find it at the moment.

Any big long Texas-sized word that starts with "Llanfair..." gotta be from Wales. In the UK, seriously. They will be irate to think you called them aborigines. Here's their tourism website:

I'm gathering together an envelope of the things for you. Will mail it off soon.

I'm sure you're now avidly looking for South Australian cancels to exchange for the Queenslanders I'm finding. Here's the stamp that got me interested in South Australian cancels:

Image

Killalpaninna was a tiny German settlement in South Australia -- it is now a ghost town. It was abandoned following many years of adversity in 1915.

http://www.teachers.ash.org.au/dnutting/germanaustralia/e/kilalpin.htm

When I found this squared circle in a small junk lot, the only reference I had available for the things was Rodney Overton's book, which didn't list this guy, which immediately got my attention.

The cancel is hard to find but not really rare -- I have two of them, and have seen a couple of others offered for sale in the last few years. But it isn't exactly common either. And the idea of having one dated a year after the town was abandoned is quite cool. (The postmark hammer was presumably moved to another post office for a bit before being retired.)

Greg

PS: GLEN -- I can't get the avatar function to work. Could I have that Killalpaninna postmark as my avatar?

Hey, Greg,

Try that!

For future reference, if you want to change it: Go to your user profile, tick to remove current avatar, then go back and enter the url of the new one and save...

Hope that helps...

Greg, it took me 2 goes and in between you were left faceless (or should it be avatarless?) for a couple of minutes.

The key seems to be that you remove the old one first and save before you can go and add the new one. I just cut'n'pasted the url from your earlier post into the last box on the avatar part of your profile.

Your Cooktown FF is Eustis #550a or possibly #550, I'd need a detailed map to know which. Old CV, $20 to $25.

Here's what Eustis says, every word:

"1935 (27 October) - T. McDonald Ltd. opened the Townsville-Cairns-Cooktown service on the 27th and 28th with mails. Only very small bags were carried, especially from Cooktown. Mails were flown both ways between Cairns and Townsville on Sunday 27th, backstamps were "Cairns Q. 5 P.M. 27 OC 35" and Townsville 2 P.M. 27 OC 35. Mails between Cairns and Cooktown were carried on Monday 28th, and backstamps were applied "Cooktown 28 OC 35" and "Cairns 28 OC 35." Pilot, T. McDonald in a Puss Moth VH-USV."

550. Cooktown-Townsville - $20.
550a. Intermediates - from $25.

No, this is the proper #550 cover. You can see where someone else wrote that number on the back with a $19.99 price. An intermediate would have been a destination between Cooktown and Townsville.

That little newspaper [The Cooktown Independent] would love a photocopy of both sides of the cover. If they still publish, they might do a story about it, and no telling what doors that might open up, perhaps an old correspondence offered to you for the taking, etc. I send photocopies of old covers (with a cover letter describing my interests and experience) all over the place all the time, hoping for the best.

QldCds,

I can see your obsession with the Queensland cancellations. Those are nice cancellations.

Cheers

Hi Doug: what a great idea, so I checked out the Cooktown Independent...published June 1884-1940, joined another newspaper 1940-47...then nothing remains that I could find, but I had a great time doing the research! Ain't old CDS stamps great!

Yep.

I once bought a Thomas Lipton Tea Clipper (ship) race cover for a few bucks. Early part of 20th century. Not that hard to find.

I wrote to the Lipton Tea Company head office wherever that was, suggesting such an historic piece might be SUPERB for their corporate Museum or boardroom etc, and for $250 post free it was theirs.

I got a company cheque back for $250 in the next mail. :D

Getting back to cancellations, just rounded up these two batches:

These are my favourite Australian stamp cancellations:

These are Malaysian cancels that were used on stamps that I suspect are from registered letters because most registered letters which carried these stamps were cancelled with these types of cancellations. All of these cancels are from towns in the State of Perak(with the exception of the Kuala Trengganu one from the State of Trengganu - now spelt Terengganu).

Actually those were from kiloware I bought from him last year. Saved these from soaking because of the nice cancels.
