To those of you dithering, the Oxford Illustrated History of Britain mentions the last date for us Brit's. We really are all bastards, no matter how hard it is to comprehend, it occured around the Roman time and is recorded within their records.

I'm a London Brit, English but British first, and as a Londoner who has met a stuffy reserved world now I've got interested in stamp collecting again. (My Irish side was involved in the Dublin uprising, for us working-class English it isn't a great deal, it's just how it was.)

I dunno. I'm talking myself in circles here so I'll shut up.

(And I was down the Pub before, so assume I'm "in the cups" as an expatriate female mate now in Norway described it in an email once, "pissed" (drunk) to all others, as she said in jest. *(It's old English)

I put a "cover" on Feebay from my sweet-heart in a Convent school near Auckland when her parents emigrated to NZ. Sometimes a letter really is more than a cancel: Christine leaving my boarding school left me devastated as a nipper, aged 48 I still at times think of her.

List that letter on ebay and describe it.

Toby

As everybody knows, or should know, the Romans despaired of civilizing the Scots and that is why Hadrian built the wall. To this day, one can fully understand their point of view and commiserate with them.

Members seem to have overlooked (which is what the Scots did) The Antonine Wall, also built by the Romans, many miles to the north of Hadrian's Wall:

PeterS, the Romans didn't "civilise" the subject races, they " enslaved " them. (Too bad you seem to think this " a good thing")
So the failure to conquer long time North of that Wall is some thing in which the Scots can take some pride!

Incidentally

The Brits build Hadrians' Wall for good reason it seems.

No internet back then either, for the Haggis Eaters to use to party poop, the lucky sods!

I left the board in disgust when that sick making Colour Joke hit the screens. ( The clown who thought it up as an APRIL FOOL JOKE really ought to get a lesson in timing. It hit the screens a whole day in advance ( 31 March in the civilised countries of the world !) and was not recognised as such and lasted far longer than 24 hours so I'd say for many of us it really backfired. :( :(

Then when I do return after a 3 day holiday Glen labels me "Haggis Eater & party pooper" . ---------Some party   !!

when a "Galah" throws compliments like that around, I guess I ought to be grateful it was mild and he was not in his usual vindictive form! :P :P :P I guess he missed his regular bowl of bile for breakfast

Fortunately most of our Scottish members are reasonable people with a sense of humour.

Thank heavens for that.

Ok , let's cool the water !

obviously my reaction, which was intended to be read with tongue in cheek :D :D has upset some gentle readers, :(

I didn't like pink , and did not get the associated date ( 31 March) connection---------I rose to the Scottish jibes as was expected by the various comments posted -----------but evidently I did not include enough "   " in my replies .

Most of my previous postings have been light hearted and I had hoped we were adult enough to survive a few barbs!!

So sorry to those I offended ----I'll try to be good in future :)

The issue with trying to run an April 1 Spoof on a worldwide board is always going to be timing.

Someone will always say "but it's still 31 March" or "it's after midday".

But if the prank is only left on for 12 hours, two thirds of the readership will probably miss it, so we're a bit between a rock and a hard place with these things...

Don't worry Vikingeck, many of our members who hav nae sense'o humor are much like our beloved PeterS. They have a heart of Gold.... cold, hard and yella!

What Italian looney ever thought that a wall 5 foot high would stop the Scots? (Well they weren't even Scot's then anyway). We just turned it into a nice paddock fence and thought it would keep the blasted toga wearers off our patch.

Then the English went and put little Hadrians all over their paddocks to keep the sheep in.

If it weren't for the Scot's there would be no TV, no bicycles, lighthouses, whiskey (ahh) etc, or... yes... Internet.

So they can stick that up their jock's jock, aye! :D

In addition to being the world's least competent computer user, I also did not realize that this one was an April Fool's Day joke.

It did, however, lead, even me, to improve my computer skills, courtesy Ian, Norvic. In that respect it was very useful.

Kindest regards, Richard

Admit that the Romans were a civilizing force in Europe (ever heard of the Pax Romanum? Longest period of peace in most of Europe in recorded history) and that that is why the Scots had to wait for liberation by the English before becoming civilized. I think that would just about be enough.

I refuse to rise to PeterS's baiting here in case I get another wigging from the " offended" admin.

Happy to meet at dawn on another field of honour!
( That should read "field of humour!!"   ) in case some one else can't see a joke

Blimey,

I finally had the courage to read the ramble I wrote before and forgot to say in the first sentence that the true English on our Isles are the Welsh apparently according to the book I mentioned, not least as the Scots never ended up as a slaves or serfs in the Roman Empire, the benefits of which actually were clear to all except to the Scots who were already doing quite well in those tribal-based days.

Scotland is actually named for an Irish tribe called the Scotti who got rid of most of the inhabitants of the modern nation.

Personally I'd say the modern Scottish and Welsh are, on average, a tad more cultured than us English, not least as regardless of class, you get along if you do, not because you had an Officer in the family who knows another who went to THIS school not THAT school. Give all three nations a Federal system and us English (or those English in power) may for the first time appreciate WHY the union is worthwhile.

Toby (okay, post a night out to see a band in Brixton and drunk, but not soooo drunk, if anyone fancies a pint, the Windmill-on-the-Common at Clapham Common is at the end of my road and we can argue about education versus class versus placement upon birth)

PS: the Scots that replied: You didn't even begin with the amount of Scottish inventions, they out-tally us English by an incredible amount, but the UK out-does all others as a whole throughout and upto the 1990's. I had no idea that Sir Tim W/Berners-Lee (whatever- the internet inventor at CERNE) was Scottish. Currently all Yanks think they invented it, In the Army I helped set it up in a tiny, tiny way: Hollywood will ensure that like ASDIC it gets called SONAR.

No matter where we are from, I will always be proud of this wonderful, creative and inventive Island we call Britain.

Toby

And that“s coming from an aussie och aye. (Mind you, on occasion I“d pop into one of those aussie pubs for a VB). (or two) :D :D :D
