My apologies if this is the wrong forum ...

I purchased one of these scanners (Canon Lide 100) a couple of years ago, because someone had mentioned that it was so cheap in cost (about $65), and created a great stamp scan.

Well after two years it died, and I purchased a newer one (Canon Lide 110), to use for my stamp and document scans.

But I have noted two major problems (for me), with both the models:

1.) When my CPU goes into sleep mode, and I have the Lide 100 or Lide 110 connected, it causes the CPU to go all the way into a coma ... and it won't respond to waking up. In the end, I have to either unplug the CPU from the wall, or click the on-off switch at the back.

2.) Both scanner models, when hooked up to my CPU, at some point interfere with my video display, and cause pink vertical lines to appear on my monitor, which are enough to make you go epileptic after a while -- and which disappear after I uninstall the scanner (and they never come back unless I reinstall the scanner).

Has anyone else had these issues with their scanner?

Can anyone recommend a better, more reliable brand?

I have a Lide 210, and it doesn't have the quirks that you describe. But it is very slow, and I'm not really impressed with the quality of the scans. My previous scanner, an Epson Perfection, was far higher quality in all regards. But I'll never ever buy another Epson product, because they don't keep their software and drivers up to date. The only reason I'm not still using it is that it won't work with Windows 7. So it gathers dust under my desk.

I use an Epson Perfection V500 Photo. I'm very pleased with this scanner. It works with Windows 7 64 Bit. But it is quite expensive.

It may not work with Windows 8, and I guarantee it won't work with Windows 9. Epson don't keep the drivers and software up to date. And given what the scanners cost, that is simply not acceptable.

Eric.

Sounds like you need to upgrade your graphics card and/or memory in your pc.

Doubling the memory usually works, if the graphics card is ok.

I recently got a Canon lide 210 and am more than happy with it.

I agree its a bit slow, but the results are pretty good.

Here is a website with tens of thousands of drivers you can download free:

http://www.driverguide.com

I've never needed to download one so I can't vouch for its accuracy.

Yes, there are zillions of drivers. But there is no Windows 7 driver for the Epson Perfection 1200S printer I own (or, to be more precise, for the card that came with it). That makes all Epson products simply unacceptable as far as I'm concerned. If they aren't willing to provide that level of customer support, I'm no longer one of their customers.

Greg looks like this guy ended fixing your problem

http://www.bigbluecup.com/yabb/index.php?topic=39353.0

"Found a very easy solution on another forum. Download latest XP drivers for the 1200 from Epsons site. Unzip the contents of the package into a folder. Go into the folder and access PROPERTIES for the Setup.exe program. Under the COMPATIBILITY page check XP SP2. Run Setup.exe and the drivers will now install with no problem (ignore Vista warning mesages). Plug in the scanner and it should function fine, mine does ;-) Hope this helps!"

Yep, there are workarounds (none of them provided by Epson) for the 1200U. Mine's a 1200S. And the problem's not with the scanner, it's with the Epson card that came with it.

But thanks for looking. My computer technician tried for a long time to find a workaround, including trying to reprogram the Vista driver. Nothing works.

Another indirect method: If anybody knows the whys or wherefores of missing drivers and thousands of other consumer-related issues, it's Walt Mossberg. He is good, and he may answer you.

Send him a question at:

I know this is an easy way out go and purchase a three in one printer/scanner /copier, mine cost $49 dollars and work fine for all my scanning needs.

Why not try "Vuescan" instead, it works with your scanner and loads in vista.
You then don't need an updated driver for the scanner.

I realise that your sour on Espon but isn't the scanner nearly 10 years old?

I've used Vuescan for years -- it's terrific software. The driver I need is for the card that came with the scanner, not for the scanner itself.

And yes, the scanner is 8 years old. It works perfectly well. It has considerably better image quality than current Epson scanners.

The HP4 laser printer I use to print cheques is 19 years old, has needed servicing precisely once, and works with every new version of Windows. It's pretty much too slow for any other purpose, but it's a brilliant cheque printer.

If I wanted quick obsolescence, I'd buy stuff from Apple.

Eric,

I've moved this one to the "Tech" Forum for maximum exposure
