Some of the icons have been "broken" for several days, as per this screen shot:

It's working fine for me Doug, maybe it is your browser.

I'm using firefox as well though.

Wish I had made the screenshot just a tad higher. The icon at the very top (you can see just a tiny part of it) is correct, the problem is random among the other icons, including the three consecutive broken icons you see here.

Also, it does not seem like I am getting 100% of the "email notifications" of new posts to threads I've recently posted on, although I get some of them.

When I click on the broken image, here's the error message I get (scroll down, it's in 3 parts).

File not found

Firefox can't find the file at /templates/subSilver/images/folder_new_big.gif.

* Check the file name for capitalization or other typing errors.

* Check to see if the file was moved, renamed or deleted.

Doug,

I have seen antispyware software do this to images that come from sites that are considered to be malicious. Have you installed any new antivirus or antispyware software recently?

Jeff

Never seen that problem.

But then again I hate firefox, so am not likely to.

Well, you all SAW it, so I am not hallucinating. The fact that some icons display,
and others are broken, strongly suggests the problem's on your end.

Firefox is updated every time they send a notice, and I have not installed
any new anti-virus software.

Finally, Glen, Firefox is wonderful.

Anyhow, I can live with broken icons.

Stuff was messed up visually on a few boards I used a lot.

When l try to look for something in the search bar, like in google, l get the result of thousands of related topics.
I also see that l can check the first 10 pages. However, whem l get to
the last page (10) , l don't see the option to explore more from thereon.
Am l missing something?
Is it because l am still a new member?
That's a site flaw?

All concerned

I hope this is the right place to bring up this point, especially as the self-acknowleged world's least competent computer user.

Up until about a month ago I used to click on "View new posts" and I would always see 10 pages of threads, now I only get one page which lasts for one day at best. Is this the new normal or is it just me? It makes it difficult for me to keep track of what is happening.

Also I find that I now always have to log in in order to view threads. I do not really mind this but I have seen up to 50 guests listed at the bottom of threads.

Help/advice would be appreciated.

Kindest regards

Richard Debney

Hi Richard :)

When you are typing in your username and password, tick the little box that says "keep me logged in" .... Then you wont need to continously log in.

(Unless you are using a public computer at a library etc, in which case it's better to log out.)

Many thanks for the quick response. I have no problem constantly logging in and out.

My problem is essentially that I only get one page of threads, rather than the old "Page 1 of 10."

Kindest regards

If you want to do a really refined search use the search option under the search box in the home page (next to members/rules etc). You can limit by poster, thread etc

Cheers

capetriangel,
I have noticed this too
I have found that if you manually "log out" ie click [log out] next to your user name. This will wipe all the new posts.
But if you just close the browser or change webpages without physically "logging off" they will still be there next time you log back on.

hope that helps
probably has something to do with cookies too, but that is beyond me

Thanks for your response.

I have just tried manually logging out, then logging back in, only to confirm what you have said regarding the loss of all "View new posts," only to find "No suitable matches found." I had not previously realized that.

The thing I really lament, however, is the loss of "Page 1 of 10" posts when coming in on the "View new posts." I still get "Page 1 of 10" posts when I come in on "View unanswered posts."

I find that I have to use "View your posts" to find recent responses to my posts. This means, for me, I have to view the board on a daily basis in order to keep current.

Kindest regards

Richard Debney

Richard, I just don't ever log out. Unless I actaully turn my modem off, I stay logged in and don't lose the recent pages.

Although I don't get to the heady days of 1,500 posts available as it was about a year ago.

Right now its sitting on 214. There may be a "time out" after so many days which drops older posts off the end of the que?

No suitable matches mean that there have been no new posts made since you logged out.
Leave it for a few days and it will build up again, maybe to 10 pages in a few weeks, although mine has never been more than 3 -5 pages. just remember not to manually log out, or the board thinks you have read them all and don't want to see them again until a new post is made..

Also if you go to the "User control panel" top right of any page
>Board Preferences
>> edit posting defaults
tick the circle that says: Notify me upon replies by default

it is a default option but just check that it has been ticked

Then go to
Manage subscriptions
and it will show you all your watched topics. (they are added there by default for any thread you reply to).
You can choose to keep or delete topics here.
Any topics you are subscribed to should send you an email whenever new posts are made to that topic.

another option is to bookmark all your favourite threads
You can see them by going to
Manage Bookmarks

To bookmark a topic, Underneath each title heading when you open a topic, and under the [new topic] [post reply] buttons , top left, you will see
"subscribe" and "bookmark"
click either one to save the topic in your watched list (subscribe) or bookmark list (bookmark)

Then each day you can access the lists from your UCP

I find that bookmarking posts (through Firefox) works the best of any method, because I can designate the subject with several keywords of my choice and keep them all in a single folder.

We recently tweaked the software so that No "Bored with Life" show at all ... based on member demand.

Skippy, Allanswood, doug2222usa

Many thanks for your responses.

It will take me some considerable time to experiment with your suggestions Skippy. I have always admitted to being the 'world's least competent computer user, and it does not look as though things are going to change in the near future. Nevertheless I am, now, getting used to the new protocol here. I was once criticized by Glen for not being able to find the 'print button.' It was a perfectly legitimate criticism.

Allanswood, here on Long Island in New York, I receive Cable TV, Telephone and Internet as a bundle and have never turned off my modem (presumably the box on the floor?) for fear of losing television.

doug2222usa, I use Safari rather than Firefox and have an Apple MacBook Pro now since the iBook was stolen when my house was burgled two years ago.

Kindest regards

Richard Debney
