Download refers to data coming into your computer and upload refers to data going out from it.

ADSL -- whatever that is?

This is what I pay the b*astards for, and get slower speed than anyone else except Clemo!

BigPond ADSL Liberty* (12GB) 20000/512 Up to 20000/512kbps 12GB*, then slowed N/a $89.95 monthly

Only used about 20% of it this month so it is not size capped.

Mine reads 2129 (266.1) down and 631 (78.9) up.

So, if I understand this correctly, Io just beats me out going down, but I get it up faster.

Nice download speed, 8) but upload speed is a problem (too much network traffic I assume) :!:

Download Speed: 14908 kbps(1863.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 413 kbps (51.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 951 kbps (118.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

There is a better speed test at http://www.ozspeedtest.com/. It has the same file mirrored on many ISPs, so if your ISP has the file it measures the speed of download direct from your ISP. The one Glen listed originally has to go through additional hops to get to your ISP and then to you, so it's potentially affected by the general speed of the internet.

On the IP-adress test I get (ADSL2+)

Download Speed: 2197 kbps (274.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 472 kbps (59 KB/sec transfer rate)
Wednesday, 3 December 2008 6:40:27 PM

but on the ozspeedtest test I get

Test run on 03/12/2008 (at) 06:34 PM

Mirror: TPG
Data: 15 MB
Test Time: 38.15 secs

Your line speed is 3.29 Mbps (3285 kbps).
Your download speed is 411 KB/s (0.4 MB/s).

which is closer to the actual speed I experience.

The "NEW" test site gives me:

Broadband Speed Test Results
Test run on 03/12/2008 (at) 06:53 PM
Mirror: Telstra Bigpond
Data: 3 MB
Test Time: 4.61 secs
Your line speed is 5.31 Mbps (5315 kbps).
Your download speed is 664 KB/s (0.65 MB/s).

20 seconds later the site I posted is 10% of that.

How can both be remotely correct?

Last Result:
Download Speed: 566 kbps (70.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 236 kbps (29.5 KB/sec transfer rate) Last Result:
Download Speed: 566 kbps (70.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 236 kbps (29.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Probably because the new test is downloading a file from a Telstra server in Sydney, while the other is located overseas and is affected by internet traffic. IP-adress.com has a domain name that suggests it is in the US but it is registered to a gentleman in Germany.

Just to clarify Glen, is your PC running off of Wifi at your end or are you wired to your ADSL modem?

Yep, that can affect the speeds. Generally wireless can be affected by interference (Microwave ovens, when running, are common culprits), by obstruction (e.g. the signal goes through plaster and wood, easier than it does through reinforced concrete), the model of the ADSL modem (not all modems are made equal), or even by distance - the further away the weaker the signal.

A simple way to test whether it's the wireless or the ADSL that is the problem, plug the computer in via a network cable to the ADSL modem (assuming it has a port available), and then run the same speed tests. If you consistently get good speeds when wired, then it's definitely the wireless side of things.

If the modem doesn't have a network port available for wired connections, then even using wireless whilst a few feet from the modem should give a similar indication whether it's ADSL or wireless that's the problem - though it's unscientific, as it hasn't totally eliminated wireless problems from the equation - some interference can be particularly bad.

Edit: I forgot to also mention that a further complication with wireless depends on which type you use, B, G, or even N. Generally B is likely to be most stable, but only 11Mbps max theoretical limit. It seems the faster you go the greater likelyhood that interference will affect it more.

The comment about where the test is run from it totally correct. Here's my results..

Download Speed: 10237 kbps (1279.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1917 kbps (239.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Friday, January 16, 2009 3:13:39 PM

Also, the discussion on wireless is completely accurate.. If there are walls/floor/ceilings between you and the wireless access point, they will also degrade the signal.

Here is another free test site, primarily for broadband:

http://www.cable-modem.net/features/int ... _test.html

My download speed just now, 4295 Kbps.

Note, on any of these sites, you must delete the test
download before you run the test again.

speedtest.net is the best, you can choose which city you are testing from and to and the results will vary accordingly

when I test my hometown, the connection is pretty good

Image

but when I try New York City, it slows down a lot!
