I have become acutely aware that my knowledge of cancellations for these two states leaves much to be desired. Would anyone be able to suggest some references that I could purchase?

If some such references have already been suggested on this board, I apologize in advance for not citing them.

Thanks dwhopper for the info on Qld cancellation references. I will definitely follow those through straight away.

Can anyone else suggest similar references for NSW. I am primarily interested in the colonial period.

For Qld partial CDS the reverse listing provided elsewhere on this board is brilliant. Sometimes even the postcodes section in the 'phone book!

Thanks QldCds! I had already printed that: a brilliant idea, too!

Dwhopper, is it ok by you if I printed sections from the site on postal markings?

Not my site. It is maintained by Marius Wytenburg (sp?). I have printed large sections of it and placed them in my binders with the stamps.

Better yet get a web site harvester and acquire a complete copy on your own machine.

Also lots of good QLD stuff at http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/dave1/index/
although only a bit about postmarks. Mainly the difference between 9 and 10 bar numeral cancelers.

Great to see more collectors interested in Queensland! Campbell is absolutely indespensible. Status Auctions has an unsold copy available for $80 http://www.statusint.com/queensland-stamps-41.html. It is lot no 1667

Thanks Jeremy29 for the lead. I placed a new one on order yesterday. I paid more for it, of course. As the deed is done, I cannot now cancel.

You don't by any chance know of any references on NSW cancellations and postal markings? That is another area where my knowledge is very limited: mainly by recording what is offered on auctions. Very tedious and limiting!

Thanks again.

To All

I have no problem with anyone printing off sections of my website

http://www.boomspeed.com/stampmad/IndexPage.htm

After all the info is there to be shared. All I ask is that there is an acknowledgment when using that info in a commercial role.

Haven't been a prolific poster either here or my other usual haunts, in fact, stamps have taken a bit of a backseat lately due to intense work commitments. I work every weekend and there just isn't the time anymore.

It is not really my field Len and others will know far more than I. The only one still in print is Australian Numeral Cancellations by Campbell which includes NSW. There was a publications, long out of print, on the barred numerals for the 1850s imperf issues which also gave rarity ratings. Can anyone help me with the details?

Hi attard44,

For NSW cancellations how about:
N.S.W. and A.C.T.
Post, Receiving, Telegraph & Telephone Offices
by N.C.Hopson & R.Tobin
It comes in 4 volumes and was printed in 1991, it covers all the offices but there are no rarity gradings for the cancels.
You may be able to obtain more information from.
ACCC of NSW
GPO Box 1971,
Sydney 1043

Regards David :)

I have found a thread on this board that outlines most of the references that are potentially available.

Sorry if I inconvenienced those who replied, and thank you.

Hi

there was an article in the "Sydney Views" magazine from August 1988 by Mike Nibbs where he go thru the reasons for the ratings he gives on the first 156 barred numerals on Sydney views and other stamps. Is this the one you are thinking of Jeremy

Thanks

Yes and no. I have seen a small hardback book that was published with all these numerals. I think he did the magazine article later.

With respect to NSW cancellation I have copies of Campbell et alia "NSW Numerical Cancellations" as well as Campbell's "Australian Numerical Cancellations: a Compendium". Neither of these give information on "rarity". As I have seen rarity ratings for such cancellations in auctions catalogues, there must be a reference somewhere.

Does anyone know what the reference is and whether it is still able to be purchased?

Hi, I'm new so joining this thread very late. I am not very experienced with NSW so do not know what sources are used to determine rarity of cancellations for auction purposes. And forgive me if I am telling grandma how to suck eggs.

However, you probably have seen that Campbell did attempt a grading of rarity of the First Bar Obliterators (see Brown & Campbell P20) , arguing that in his opinion, cancellations rare on the Sydney views would also be rare on later issues. Robson Lowe (Encyclopedia of British Empire Postage Stamps vol IV: Australasia p13) lists the 97 Country post Offices extant at the time of issue of the Sydney views and provides an indication of the degree of rarity of these cancellations as recorded on Sydney Views.
Cheers.

Thanks for the reply, Perangko. I have both of those references; but they are inadequate with respect to later issues.

I keep a complete run of the prices realized of the Premier Postmark Auctions for that sort of purpose. They give a really good indication of the relative rarity of otherwise undocumented postmarks. As far as I know, there is no other good source of info on the scarcity of NSW numerals.

Greg I have been doing the same with Status International and other auctions.

Is there any way of setting up some rating list on this board with the ratings that you and I have (others as well, maybe), that could be edited and added to?

Hi
I have this excel spreadsheet set up to record what cancels i have.
i have made this sample of how we could do it. the ratings for type 1 and under "ALL" is from mike nibbs article in sydney views which i believe is the only ratings done for NSW numerals. The coloured ratings are a guess based on what i have, the blanks are supposed to be around (from Campbell & brown), and the "x" do not exist. Maybe we could do something like this if we could put the spreadsheet somewhere, or email it around or whatever

Image[/list]

thanks

Dave, that is a good start. I think the problem is how to set it up so that posters can add to the lists, edit, etc. Also how and by whom the editing is monitored, so that errors do not creap in. How many posters are interested in this area is also important. If the response is low or the problems above are not resolved, perhaps whoever is interested (including you and I) could share (email to each other who we have).

I, too, have a spredsheet set up, but more simlified than yours. I have the numeral in the first column, the Type in the second, the town in the third, the rating in the fourth, the stamp/s on which the numeral is struck in the fifth, in the sixth I have an estimate of the value, and in the last column I keep notes such as where the rating came from, etc.

If you want an interactive spreadsheet used by multiple users consider Google Documents. You can control who can edit the sheet and who can view the sheet. One of the other board members and I are developing and maintaining a South Australia squared circles listing this way. Works great.

I note the last addition to this string is 7 Jan 2008, just when it was getting interesting.
Have there been further developments re shared information on NSW cancels?

Let's hope Freeman includes a rarity rating for the cancellations of NSW.

Other than the first barred numeral types issued in 1850 as mentioned above, there is no publication offering a guide to the rarity of NSW cancellations at this point in time.

As I've stated before, population is the big key to rarity. The 19th century censuses of NSW can be found here:

It includes ratings and a computer disk.

Yep, the flyer says that it will be out in August and there's details of what's inside so it looks pretty comprehensive. Pre-ordering is now available.

I've been hoarding States cancels for a while and both Freeman & White for Victoria and Manning's two books on Queensland have revealed a lot of good stuff I din't really know I had.

Now Hugh Freeman's NSW book will complete the Eastern States trifecta 8)

Hugh sent me details a few weeks back on the book.

I've taken about 20 pre-orders so far from clients, so a long awaited tome. :)

I belive I sold more of the Bernie Manning Queensland books than the rest of the world trade added together. :)

Cartons and cartons of them. Great to see these great new books appearing.

The back cover of the book is also pretty fitting with a number of 1d. Shields on piece with Lindfield (a Sydney suburb) numeral cancels and, in the background, the original Lindfield PO:

I have just received my copy of Freeman's NSW Numerals book; just as good as the Victorian one.
Also obtained the WWW volumes of Victorian postmarks; A-B and C-G.
Does anyone know what happened to this project which was scheduled to be completed in the mid 1990s?
What happened to all the materials assembled for the remaining volumes, is there a chance of resurrecting it?
I bought a flash drive containg the Smithies Queensland postmarks book. This is a convenient and cheaper way of disseminating this material. I wonder if someone could do the same thing for the PMI and PMCI book of WA postmarks?
