Hi,
I am looking for philatelic literature (handbooks, catalogues, periodicals or articles) available online.
Any philatelic topic or area included.

I would appreciate if you can provide the links where such material can be downloaded?
thank you in advance.

Mowbrays usually have a good range of literature in their monthly sales.

Try viewing on line at: www.mowbrays.co.nz

Thank you.

David.

As discussed recently in the "Why Publish?" thread, you're not going to hit the jackpot like J.K. Rowling by writing a philatelic reference book.

Something like the flyspecks of Upper Bongoland would be motivated by pure passion and the interest in sharing what you found, maybe a touch of vanitas to see your name on a cover and the legacy of being referred to as "foremost expert on X" and no-one else researches the topic as you said everything there is to say on it.

Even a 'mainstream' topic like Aussie Geo V heads or USA Pony Express probably only breaks even; reference books are $40-100 each because the print run is small, you don't achieve economies of scale by distributing the cost of production across millions of copies, etc.

So publishing online, well it would be a kind-hearted soul who devotes their time and energy to compiling the info, then puts it online gratis. A published book at least has your name attached to it, so people know you wrote it (OK, so many ego plays a big part after all). Also websites can come and go, the printed word can last forever (Domesday Book is doing pretty well after 900+ years). And when you want to look something up, do you reach for a reference book on the shelf, or go trolling through your bookmarked websites?

If you don't want to put out the cash to buy reference literature, many philatelic orgs let you borrow from their collections.

The only literature I've found online for my interests is books 70+ years old whose copyright expired so its considered "public domain" and they've been scanned and uploaded as PDF by libraries. Obviously there'll have been further research done on most any topic in the interim, so such literature cannot always be considered comprehensive or a great guide.
