A British ebay seller mackets is selling forged postmarks on Malta stamps which are catalogued more used than mint. Some examples which were sold:

Note the 2d, 2s, 2s6d, 5s, 10s:

His active listings are here:

and his sold listings:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/csc/Malta-/65178/ ... ld=1&rt=nc

(note that these searches include some items with genuine postmarks as well)

Interestingly, all fine used items he has are Maltese. He also has private listings. I contacted him and I did not recieve a reply.

He is also trying to pass this fiscally used 10s, as postally used:

For the second time in two days I find myself in the position of knowing the dealer concerned. I've sent an email directing them to this thread.

Jon

EDIT: I'm delighted to be able to tell you that even before the edit time had elapsed on this post the listings have been cancelled. I know this dealer very well and know him to be completely above board and following my email he has replied saying that these came from a deceased estate and he had no reason to doubt any of the cancels.

Thanks to the eagle eyes on this board he has taken off all those that were identified as forged and thanks you for spotting them.

Jon

I purchased this Malta collection from a deceased estate and had no reason to questions whether the cancels were genuine or not. I have now cancelled the ebay listings of those that appear to have the forged cancels.

I apologise if this was a genuine error, but because the seller had not replied (although now I recieved the reply which was just sent) and the listings were private I suspected wrongly.

Again, I am sorry.

Don't be. Without your vigilance this would not have been spotted and I couldn't have let Terry know. I've bought a lot of stuff from him and have found him to be one of the 'good guys'.

As you could see from me earlier posts I didn't think he was deliberately trying to mislead but without you pointing it out he could have sold these to an unsuspecting buyer.

Knowing Terry this would be the last thing he would want to do as his reputation is built on being an honest dealer.

So now you two are in contact I can recommend him for decent British Commonwealth stamps and first day covers! :D

Please forgive me if I appear incredibly naive, but what is the point of listing privately on ebay when everyone seems to advise potential buyers to avoid private listings like the plague?

You have it right, Finchley. Avoid such sellers like the plague. In the stamp category, they either don't know what they are doing, or far more likely, they DO know what they are doing - selling forgeries. Private feedback means they have something to hide.

Even more reason. Notwithstanding our already known, honest reputation, integrity demands that we continue to maintain meticulous attention to what we are selling - especially when overprints are being offered.

He sells these Maltese stamps to the ebay bunnies for very good prices. ebay is happy so long as they rake in there seller fees. Meanwhile many buyers are getting taken for a ride:evil:
