You think? Those thick blobby fake cancels usually hide specimen overprints on the reprints. I'd bet that there is an overprint lurking under that top bar. Or are you seeing a cleaned pen cancel I can't see?

A genuine postally used example of this stamp (as distinct from the Melbourne corner cancel, and Adelaide large portion/full strike cto's) is a super rarity - if indeed any are known; I do not recall having seen one.

I'm pretty sure I've seen them with Wallaroo squared circles, used from the goldfields (and thanks -- I hadn't been sure whether those Adelaide double-ring cancels were CTOs or not. They always looked a bit too clean to be true).

There are a few spots where the 50/- looks like it might have a cleaned fiscal cancel. It could be staining coming from the yucky gum on this perf of the issue - yes, it could also be hiding a Specimen or Reprint .. would need to see the stamp to be 100% sure.

Tere are a at least a couple of different Adelaide cto's seen on different values of the Long Tom series.

You have to admit that the bearded queen is a striking error! But wow, what an optimist.

Mod Hat ON

It would be appreciated greatly if any listed item on this thread could include a picture of the item being discussed, as they tend to dissappear from e-bay after a few months, and this Board is intended to be a long term archive of dicussions, including the capacity to see the items being discussed.

Some great lots, but again a request.

The massive long ebay links make the page read "wide" for everyone, which is a pain.

You can get around this in 2 ways:

1. Edit out everything past the item number (fastest option)

2. Go to tinylink.com and paste here as a short link.

3. Or as iomoon has done, which is a simple old fashioned html hand coding [url]and[/url] etc

However lopping off all the extraneous crap after item number like this is fastest I reckon and gives you this kind of thing:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1916-KG-V-NYASALAND ... 0152569478

Which was originally this long monster:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1916-KG-V-NYASALAND-RHODESIA_W0QQitemZ250152569478QQihZ015QQcategoryZ263QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks!

I did it for dwhopper, and messed up The Pom's link when editing. Sorry about that.

It takes literally 30 seconds to take any ebay (or other web) image and add it to a photobucket account Simon, and paste that here. photobucket even gives you the link with the [img] tags already added to it fron t and end, so that saves time in itself!

That way, the images from these mad dreamers will be visible for years most times. More guidance here - 8)

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=284

Also for scammers it offers a permanent record of past bodgy items. i.e. if this peanut with the fake cancel on SA offers one again in 2 months time with same fake cancel, the image HERE will hang him, however the original ebay lot photo will not be visible in 2 or 3 months.

Here is why people really need to stick to their area of expertise, and learn not to waste money on listing ebay items where they seriously do not have a clue:

Kate Jewellry Shop has expanded in to stamps, and is offering the following

http://stores.ebay.com.au/katesjewelleryshop

$100.00

Image

$100.00

Image

$40.00

Image

$50.00

Image

$40.00

Image

"Kate" will apparently be listing many more items, and while I realise it is her money, I still remain pretty annoyed that there is simply nowhere people will go to establish that their "treasured" finds are essentially worthless.

Well, at least this one is only $900

This stuff is apparently from his grandmothers collection. I hope he is not charging her his ebay fees, and telling her he is going to make her a fortune.

I note that he has listed some of his stuff twice (on the Australia and the World listings, so he is paying double fees (I assume).

I don't think he is a crook, I simply believe he does not have a clue. Well, hopefully it's his money.

Because so far, the stull he has listed for $65,900, is not worth 5 cents for the lot.

That's quite bizarre. The starting price was $5, yet there's been 17 bids from seven bidders, taking it to $65.

And there's no overprint!!! Are they all blind?

I noticed that one. If it is unhinged full gum, it is worth well over $100 anyway. Specimen or normal.

Bidding on mis-described items based on your knowledge of what the scan shows is probably the BEST way of catching a bargain on ebay.

For example:

THIS lot was described (or mis-described) as "German Occupation of Ukraine", which would lead most to assume they were the common overprints on Hitler Heads without even looking. When I looked, this was the scan I saw!

Image

They were issued locally by the German occupying forces for use by Civilian Workers. Only 1,200 sets were produced. I picked them up for £7 or about Aus$15. Michel catalogue value is around £500 or Aus$1,200.

Here's one for all you "true collectionists"

US$20 starting bid (BIN $25) and $10 postage to Australia!

Image

The description:
This is a very rare and unique Stamp. It is clearly stamped as used in 1962.

All its corners are intact, and using a magnifier one can read an original re-print of the letter sent to Malta after WWII awading Malta and its people the George Cross.

This is an icon of History as Malta carries the cross on its national flag to this day.

* A true collectionist must have one of these stamps in his collection.
* See photo for the good condition of the stamp.

I must be a true "collectionist" as I do own one of these. However, I am such a great guy I will sell it to any member of this board for $A10.00 post free :D.

And mine is not creased, does not have a stain at the top or any short perfs, so it is a real bargain. :D

I saw that lot of rare Christmas stamps, and contemplated including it here, but I will include this one as well, simply because the seller has a series of equally high quality stamps ALL starting at $20,00 (and a nice Wedding Dress for $900.00).

And the bargain of the day for only $21.00 including postage is:

Image

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/AUSTRALIA-STAMP- ... QQihZ003QQ

I am at present contemplating soaking about 400 of these gems to add to my junk box. at $20.00 each, it might be worth it. :D

Actually my 5d Blue Queens that I am staring at came as part of a junk box which I purchased from Glen. Hey Glen, $8,000 worth of 5d Blue Queens (based on the above asking price) in a $65 junk box.

Reality speaking though, tells me 8 cents the lot.

I cannot resist posting this one - $825 or $950 BIN. "Western Australia's first postage stamp - 1854-1954".

Amazing how the colony of Western Australia had the foresight to know that in 1954, a stamp commemorating the first stamp they issued would be issued by the Commonwealth of Australia.

The same person has several other items at stupid prices, but none as stupid as this one.

And I think the third option wins. The same clown is offering this for the rather odd price (in more ways than one) of $99.65

I am offering a complete collection - German Empire 1919-1945 -. It contains the stamps of the Kaiserreich form 1919-1923, Mi # 84-337, the Weimarer Republic 1923-1932, Mi # 338-478, the III. Reich 1933-1945, Mi #. 479-910, complete. Of course incl. all the Zeppelin stamps like Southamerica flight, Polar flight and Chicago flight (Scott C38-C39, C40-C42 and C43-C45), IPOSTA sheet (Scott B33), Nothilfe souvenir sheet (Scott B58) and OSTROPA sheet (B68). The stamps are all genuine in mint condition. All the stamps have full gum, no hinges and best perforations. The collection appears absolutely MNH and the big majority is definitely MNH, without any doubts. The OSTROPA sheet is, as recommended and usual, without gum and has original size, like the other sheets. The other top-values as the Wagner set (B49-B57) are also in a very attractiv shape. Very nice collection, mounted on two new LINDNER-T album. No reserve. Start at 1 USD.

my main concern is thiese.

Kloster,

Your quote from the ebay seller includes the words: "The stamps are all genuine in mint condition"

If that is NOT the case, and any of these items can be proven to be non-genuine, then this should be a matter for the eaby authorities to deal with.

It's hard to tell about those sheets from the scans the seller provided -- it always is. There are fakes of those that would fool me and I would not buy those (except as "throw-ins" in a large lot) without certificates.

A few things in his favor though:

(1) The collection contains EVERYTHING for the period it's supposed to cover, and someone obviously put a lot of work putting it together. It contains some stamps that are fairly expensive MNH. I say this because a lot of times, you see a collection of mostly cheap stuff and then a set of Zepps...and then you expect them to be fake since they don't really fit in with the rest of the collection.

(2) He did scan the backs of the Zepp set and they appear to be watermarked. The "private reprints" that you see around are pretty convincing with respect to the design, but I think all of them are unwatermarked.

He didn't mention a return policy. I wouldn't bid on that one if I had no recourse if the souvenir sheets were fake, or if more than a few stamps were not MNH, since there is such a huge premium for German MNH in that period.

This is a mixture of stamps so that are very old from 1900-1990. Some are used but there are some unused. There is about 400 stamps in this collection as well as some very rare stamps from WW2. There are stamps from around the world from different times. This collection was found in Great Grandparents old barn. I do not know the specific value of the collection but I have matched many of them with some very rare stamps online. I am not promising any values nor am I a stamp expert so bid at your own risk. There are no returns and Serious bidders only. At least one stamp in the collection is worth 25,000.00. There are probably more but that is the only on I know of.

So is anyone brave anough to ask which one of the 400 is worth $25,000? :)

Check out the seller's answer to a question about the astonishing starting price. It's all very Frederick Forsyth...

Question & Answer Answered On

Q: Is the starting bid $990,000 ? Sep-11-07
A: Yes. This a treasure chest of stamps. I have done online research and have found many stamps that are very very rare. I have seen a few that there are only 2-6 in known existence. I have not listed the stamps or posted pictures to protect my own personal safety.

I couldn't resist - I've asked for a scan of the $25K stamp.

At least his p&h is reasonable!

Now that will be an interesting scan :?

I notice that the seller has been buying costume jewellery, car parts and fabric. OK a fascinating scenario unfolds:

They get $990K for the obviously dodgy album.
They fashion a copy of "Old Glory" out of the fabric and sell it on eBay for another $million.
They flog the costume jewellery off on eBay as real and get another $million.
If tracked down they can escape in a vehicle made solely of parts bought on eBAY.

Either way eBay wins (again)

The obvious next question is:

"Do you actually want to sell them, then?"
