I'm not exctly sure myself without my SG catalogue at hand, but it is certainly Eastern European. Perhaps pre-1920s Russia or otherwise Ukraine or some such country with a similar looking alphabet.

The text isn't large enough for me to read it properly but it definitely does not say Ukraine anywhere and though cyrillic, doesn't seem ukrainian,

Can't help more than that, though

I recognise the black overprint near the foot; it's not Ukraine or Russia. I suspect one of the Yugoslav states.

Should be possible to match that coat of arms with something else.

Hi All,

it is definitely cyrillic. "Marka" points to pre 1918 Finland and it seems to be a duty stamp, at least not a postage stamp.

The cancellation at lower left consists of the letters K, P and C which should be cyrillic too and means K, R and S.

Sorry, don't know more.

Regards, Lars

In the top round blue circle can you read the lettering - its 7 letters xx HCER(H)A?

I cant tell the first 2 from the scan.

Cyrillic - MAPKA = MARKA western = stamp

ΔECET = DYESET = Ten

At the top - TAKCENA = TAXENA = ? TAX?

If the CoA is this one, then it's Serbia

I'm still sure I've seen that overprint on postage stamps.....

The overprint looks a bit like the "JBC" monogram.

Perhaps you saw it here?

Same overprint. According to that thread, this is a Serbian fiscal.

The Cyrillic transliterates as "Taksena Marka" = "Tax Stamp"

Apart from the coat of arms, the other big clue is the value of "Decet Para" = "Ten Para".

Value in "Para" in Cyrillic is a BIIIIIIIG pointer to pre-WW1 Serbia

Doh! I didn't see Para hidden by the other marks!

Thanks,

This is from the link posted by Pirano

"In 1884 Serbia borrowed 25 million dinars from French & Austrian banks. As previous debts could not be repaid, the banks claimed the receipts from revenue stamp taxation as security for the loan.

All fiscal stamps from 25/6/1884 until 15/4/1896 carried a control monogram KCP to show where the revenue was going" - from J Barefoots Yugoslavia Revenues.

Would "KPC" then stand for the letters of a particular bank?

According to the Barefoot catalogue KCP refers to the Office of Serbian Revenue.

The KCP overprint is inverted on this stamp.

And presumably that KCP is actually Cyrillic for KSR?

Yes, so for example the C is the first letter of Српски ("Serbian" in Serbian).

Then it would be
Kingdom of Serbia Revenue?

Yes, it was issued in 1884.

That is a rather Anglo-centric view of Serbo-Croat. The K could indeed be Kraljestvo or Kraljevina which means kingdom. But it could equally well be Kancelarija which means office.

I didn't read Chancy's suggestion carefully enough. :D

I thought I was agreeing that the stamp is a revenue issued by the Kingdom Of Serbia.

I see no reason to doubt Barefoot's statement that "KCP" refers to the Office of Serbian Revenue.

It's not MARKA but the cyrillic letters MAPKA ... which is of course MARKA when converted to the Roman alphabet.

IT means "Stamp" and is nothing to do with the Markka shown on Finnish Stamps.

So it it either Russian (the crest does not look Russian to me) or one of the Balkan states using the cyrillic alphabet - Blugaria, Serbia or Montenegro.

Not a postage stamp either - nothing in the Catalogues looking like this one - so it's likely to be a Revenue Stamp.

Not sure which country - but I'd plump for Bulgaria if pressed

I am not sure that is true. I think it is more of an Americo-centric view :)

So this is a revenue stamp most likely issued by the Office of Serbian Revenue within the Kingdom of Serbia in 1884.

Thanks!
