Thanks Nigel - glad you like it.

Here are a few more. These are general revenue issues, I think mostly used as receipt stamps. Also overprinted for province/state use.

The two at the end of the fourth row are overprinted for Maharashtra , but I can't read the overprint on the other non-English ones.

The upper half of this lot I believe are to do with Employees' Medical Insurance.

Then we have Radio Licence stamps and two 'Healthy India' charity labels.

Here are a few more Telegraph stamps to go with the ones Tony posted earlier in the thread. As Tony illustrated, they were normally cut in half in use, so I'm not sure how these whole examples survived.

This series was mostly used on Hundis before a series of stamped papers for Hundis was printed. The embossing was used for this type as often as printed circular datestamps.

The anna values should be green. If they are in shades of yellow or orange they were affected by sun or chemical. I also have similar example in my collection. The other color changelling is from brown in later post-independence series to grey.

There is a lot of confusion about the status of these stamps. Some dealers and collectors marked them as cancelled reminders. But this is probably not true. Its true nature is to serve vendors (and/or court) as an example of material which is current use. I also have several examples. They are known in simple letters (as yours) or with additional fancy boxes.

Well, the first in the fifth row is Gujarat and all others are Rajasthan (except the last one - normal India with Refugee Relief overprint).

These were used as receipts. Queen Victoria are first and then followed by Edward VII (around 1905). But then there was a large gap and therefore a lot of postage stamps were used for these purposes. Next revenue series was issued around 1935!.

Here is an imprinted fiscal on a complete blank check. This one is from Rangoon and has an "R" on the imprint. I also have Bombay with a "B" and Calcutta with a "C." So I assume the cutouts above are from Calcutta.

I wonder what the pairs of numbers on the imprints indicate?

In any case, checks seem to have been taxed extremely low compared to hundis.

Yes, this is a Hundi. This one is a joint of several Hundis together, quite common practice. Maybe, someone prepared them for a smaller amount, but later it was joined for a larger sum.

Found this in Finance Department Notification No. C-63-Stamps-25, Dated 5th May, 1925, RULES UNDER THE INDIAN STAMP Act, 1899

4.(1) Hundis - Hundis, other than hundis which may be stamped with an adhesive stamp under section 11, shall be written on papers as follows, namely:

(a) A hundi payable otherwise than on demand, but not at more than one year after date or sight and for an amount not exceeding rupees thirty thousand in value, shall be written on paper on which a stamp of the proper value bearing the word 'hundi' has been engraved or embossed.

(b) A hundi for an amount exceeding rupees thirty thousand in value, or payable at more than one year after date or sight, shall be written on paper supplied for sale by the Government to which a label has been affixed by the Collector* of stamp Revenue, Calcutta or a Superintendent of stamps, and impressed by such officer in the manner prescribed by rule 11.

(2) Every sheet of paper on which a hundi is written shall be not less than 85/8 inches long and 51/8 inches wide, and no plain paper shall be joined thereto.

(3) The provisions of sub section (1) of rule 7 shall apply in the case of hundis.

Note - Hundi stamps should not be used for any documents except Hundis under this rule, and for promissory notes and bills of exchange other than those provided for by section 11 of the Act, or by rules 13 and 17 (see rule 5). No plain paper should be joined to an impressed sheet bearing the word 'Hundi'. Clause 3 should be noted carefully.

*Government of India, Finance (C.R) 13, dated 20th May 1926.

Here is a hundi from 1962 for 5000R written on stamped paper of 2R 50nP. There is no doubt that it is a hundi in that the word "HUNDI' is inscribed as part of the stamp design.

It was a common practise that large companies pre-printed some data on Hundi forms and subsequently were filled when required. These post-independence series are nice and also contains some varieties such as shifts, doubly printed values.

The four long lines of text appear to have been written in one go (continuously) after the papers were joined.

The amount of the Hundi appears to be 10500/= as mentioned in the text at the expected place. At a stamp rate of One Anna for every Hundred Rupees of Hundi value, this particular Hundi appears to be over stamped by more than Two Rupees.

The reverse of this Hundi showing the boxed amount and the discharge details should be very interesting.

A very nice Hundi. Thanks for sharing this image, Peter.

The Green/Blue Victoria fiscals (4 Anna Horizontals) are quite common. Others are not so common. Appearance of toning/creasing etc decreases the value but they are nice examples nevertheless. Thanks for sharing lovely images.

I have those radio licence stamps too. I am told they were required in the 1970s to have a radio at home. Am I correct? Wondering if the 7 you display all the Radio licence stamps there were? Or, were there more?
Thanks

Many series in many denominations from Rs 0.50 to Rs 50 were issued. These BRL Stamps (Broadcast Reciever Licence) were to be affixed in small Radio Licence Booklets with provision for annual renewal. Separate rates were prescribed for portable Medium Wave Transistors, Portable Medium Wave/ShortWave Transistors, For Radio Sets, Televisions (Screen Size), 2-in-1 (Radio Tape Recorders) etc.

I have some images on www.indiancinderellas.wordpress.com

I already posted this on another thread, but it fits here as well. This is the latest Indian revenue stamp that was issued (2011) according to Barefoot. It has a nice paper fold error. I got it for $15 on ebay (from an Indian seller). You wouldn't expect errors like these to exist on modern stamps (although a number of similar errors on India revenues are available on ebay).

Image

I suspect this was printer's waste? Maybe someone could provide some more details. :)
