From 1765, the duty on playing cards in Great Britain was shown by printing the duty on the Ace of Spades (and sometimes also extra on the wrapper).

There were just duty wrappers for the deck from 1862 onwards



But, according to Barefoot (2002), De La Rue continue to print the now superfluous "DUTY THREE PENCE" on its aces...



...which stopped in 1960.

And I always thought they were some sort of revenue stamped paper.

Harry actually brought in one of the Wrappers on Tuesday,also Vols 1.2.and 3. of the Catalogues on the Duty stamps.
They put Barefoot and Hall to shame,
