[b]Hi

I'm looking for more of these Aussie Delandre.

Anyone knows how many different ones were produced?

Were all states and territories represented?

Thanks

They are fantastic, thanks for showing them :!:
I love the Kangaroos and Cockatoo, I'm guessing it was for the Red Cross

I've Never heard the term "Delandre" before ?

Just spotted this Thread, and Like Skippy,,I have never seen them.
So will show the Guru,...Harry ,on Monday,,

Are these originals.or reprints,,as the Art work seems to be very Rough in respect of the period.also the colouring seems to be washed out and not as intense as many other Cinderellas from this time.and the Title AUSTRALIA appears to be different on all stamps shown, which seems strange.
and there again, perhaps I Have been reading the John Bosic Thread Too Much,,

Hi Skippy

Thanks for the interest.

Delandre was an interesting character. Gaston Fontanille, aka Delandre, produced thousands of WW1 propaganda cinderellas for all the European allied forces, including colonial units. Delandre vignettes come in various sizes and shapes. Some were gummed, others not. The quality of the printing sometimes reflected whether he managed to pay the printer for the previous batch. He was often in trouble with the law. Wikipedia has a brief history. I'll post more when I've got a minute. The Aussie Delandre above are 1" X 1.5".

Hi As far as I know, they are originals. The poor quality gum, heavy hinge remnantswould point in that direction. I don't think anyone would have bothered reproducing Delandre vignettes in the past, as they are too numerous and had so far little value (this might change!).

The quality of the art work can vary with Delandre. I don't know if they were produced as a set. A lot is strange about Delandre productions. Most of them were produced during the war, and quality was not always spot-on. They were just meant to be a bit of cheap propaganda (some of it quite virulently anti-German!!!).

Mrboggler asked Harry about these, Harry has 100's of these and says that Delandra printed 1000's of them, all on country's, Flags and Military Units of WW1.

Harry will bring in what he has, so we can do some comparisons, As Mrboggler thinks they are a bit wishy washy, not the bright colours that tended to be used in that period.

I tried to do some research after picking the 6th ALH Hunter River Lancers issue at random, but cant find that unit refereed to as the 6th, they where the 12th/16th from what i can tell, not sure why such a mistake would have been made though :?:

Hi

Actually, it says 16th. Yes, the printing is not A1, but it is definitely a 16, not a 6. Why would they have had 2 vertical lines on the left, and only one on the right?

Yes, Delandre produced thousands, as I explained in my reply to skippy. A lot of them where generic, and, for instance, they added the Infantry battalion No. to it. I only collect different designs.

Delandre had to change printers many time due to unpaid bills, so quality of printing varied. At some stage, he only produced black and white vignettes due to financial constraints.

I agree the graphics on this lot are a bit sloppier than usual, bearing in mind the scans exagerated that aspect (or was it artistic expression). I would like to know what sort of control Delandre exerted on his graphic arists. Let's not forget it was war time.

If anyone has produced an authoritative book on his work, I'd by it instantly.

I've been collecting Delandre for 20 years, and this lot didn't strike me as "not Delandre" when I got it. If anyone has produced "Delandre-like" vignettes of this quality, I'll gladly collect them too, as I would have had happily collected Speratti forgeries if I'd been born 2 generations earlier!

Fascinating topic... I just did a quick eBay search and found a number of instances of this work. Also on offer are these two books:

Images of'the Great War, four volumes apparently detailing all the Delandre firm's work in the 1914-1919 period

Reprint of a work on Delandre

Both close in six hours... Neither is 100% Australia-related, but the second volume from the first auction covers all non-French military vignettes, so it would likely be an excellent resource.

I see the just-out Cinderella Stamp Club (UK) catalogue has the full set of these in their Oct 2nd auction, reserved at £24, £13, £22, £25 & £32 respectively.

Well that makes the US$99 winning bid on the first four volumes a pretty good buy.
