Very nice collection Glen.

It is a dying hobby these days, between gas lighters and the ban smoking brigade there is not much call for them.

Occaisionaly at local auctions they come up but then few and far between.

The number of active collectors may be declining but there is still a keen collecting base. An example of the journal of the British Society is shown below - check out their web site if you have an interest.

Would you call this item "phillumenotelic"?

A Greek stamp for the 1896 Olympics on a 1980's matchbox.

For some reason sea themes are frequent on matchboxes.

Hi there Zenon

The stamp on the first box is brilliant, haven't got one myself but I suspected that a stamp set was out there.

Please post more.

Yes, there was a set of 12 olympic stamps and a set of matchboxes, although the latter were probably less than 12.
I will see if I have more of them. Possibly they are the only stamps-on-matchboxes in the world.

Until you get an answer from the owner, it seems to be a kind of "genuineness" ribbon of a former communist country. They used to stick similar ribbons on Greek matchboxes some decades ago, when the state had the monopoly of matches.

Thanks for that bit of info,,but why "genuineness" :? if the State had a Monopoly. then all should have been Genuine :?

Hi there Mr Boggler

Sorry to take so long to reply, but the darned things were buried behind a mountain of stuff.

Here are four more boxes the label seems to be a seal.

The top line is the same "Imposta Fiammiferi". Now babelfish translates this as "it sets up matches". So I presume it is a label and the lower tablet shows a name either design or the manufacturer.

Aranyadc, I have a huge collection of Matchbox labels but there must be a few in your 50 that I do not have. A spreadout itemwise scan would help. Can trade for Stamps/Matchbox Labels/Postcards (KGV-KGVI) or other items. Kindly respond.

Here's my collection of circa 1974-75 Redhead matchbox labels. Yes, some of them look grubby. They were salvaged off the dirt footpaths of the streets of Broome, and I hadn't at that time learnt the trick of adding dishwashing liquid to the soaking bowl.

I'll think about it Birder (this will take a month or two). If I decide I can live without my Matchbox Label collection, I'll let you have first option on it.

I used to have a collection of miniature shampoo bottles, which I gave away, and a collection of clutch pencil lead refills, in their tiny containers of a multitude of different varieties, which I also gave away. I sometimes regret no longer having those collections. However, in today's world of virtually no-cost digital photography, I can probably survive with just the photos of my past treasures, rather than the "entires". Ahh, that 'hoarder' gene . . . both the bane and the balm of my existence!

Thanks Lambinator.

The album arrived today. It is superb and has vastly added to my collection. My family is heavily into birdwatching and I collect matchbox labels. This album is of great interest to all of us. Already we have spent around four hours going over the individual labels and the birds. Arguments, running to birdbooks to prove a point..wonderful family activity.Source of great joy. Many thanks. Shall also be writing to you separately. If there is anything specific you require from this part of the world, kindly do not hesitate....

..and I am going to affix that label shortly.....

Thanks and regards.

I mentioned on another thread that my son had come across a hoard of matchbox labels. They belonged to his mother's uncle who died about 20 years back.

I got hold of them today as he wants me to help him sort out what to do with them, his first thought being to put them on ebay. I'd like him to think a bit more about them before he gets rid of them.

I haven't had a chance to look properly as there are thousands but I will scan some of the more interesting ones and post them. In the meantime, my son may get the bug, who knows.

Image
This is the tin they are in. Each of the little packets is a set of up to 64 labels.

Nightwatchman, those Brymay are very nice.

JJ, I agree and explaining what the images mean to an inquisitive great grandchild is a thing to be cherished.

JJArmstrong I can definately make out a Dutch set and several Australian labels.
Ebay is a great place to find matchbox labels etc.
I unfortunatly have approx 170000 philumenistic items that I am trying to sell on Ebay and Ebid.
Trouble is I will be dead before I sell them all.
Collecting things can kill you ;)

Not sure if this is the right forum, but it is a match box cover and it's on a cover.

I found this on eBay ages ago and saved the pics. I just thought it was a rather sly way of trying to get something through the post for nowt.

But it didn't work. Looks like it got an 'unpaid' strike on the side you see, and a postage due strike on the front.

No doubt the recipient was a bit miffed!

Perfectly acceptable and a very nice cover.

I have just had an auction catalogue through with no postage, (will speak to him about using unfranked a second time cos they just don't stick) so the stamp may have become detached. Or the sender may have disliked the recipient

Hi Feebletodix, a question if I may? My husband has a few hundred match books (one randomly picked and shown below). He's not a serious collector...he just buys them if he sees them where ever! cause he likes them!

My question though is, if he ever decided to sell them or give them away, are there laws about sending 'matches' in the post? Do you have to remove all the matches first?
He has a couple that actually have wooden matches in them! Is that common for some older matchbooks? I would rather keep those ones complete!

Not the best of scans...should have held the lid down a bit!

Thanks, Anne

Hi there Anne

No, they should not be sent by post. Well not unless you want to cause a bit of a panic.

As far as my very limited knowledge goes the more complete a box or book the more it would be sought after.

I have only a limited knowledge and started collecting because I liked the images on the boxes and began the thread to show off their beauty.

Regards

Feebletodix
