A friend of my wife's asked me to look at her stamp collection.

One of the items is this Japanese 2 Sen stamp on piece. It looks very "revenue" to me.

Can somebody please give me any information about dates, usage, value (if any) etc?

Thank you!

This is the piece the stamp is on - there's a very faint small red cancellation tying the stamp to the piece.

"Barefoot" says:
1898. General Duty, now including most taxes previously collected by Special issues.

It's a general revenue tax stamp. valued at $.50us. On a doc like you have $3 or $4.

The document is dated 19 December 1911 in a couple of places.

The red cancellation will be a personal seal, with the name of one of the parties involved.

Tony,

Thanks a lot.

I use Sakura for Japanese postal stationery, but must confess to using just the English language bits - I used to work next to a Japanese lady so could always ask when it got awkward, confusing or whatever. Or when there were two words in English and ten lines in Japanese. I once did a course in Hiragana and Katakana, learned some basic phrasebook stuff and the lady taught me how to swear (she said), but that don't help with Kanji.

Happy to help, locakart! (Incidentally, Japanese must be about the most unsatisfactory language in the world for swearing. It hardly has any really strong language. You just have to fall back on Toshiro Mifune-style grunting and eyebrow-twitching.)
