Bought these in a coin estate lot today.

Look to be average circulated condition to me.

Gold seems to be bouncing back up from its recent slump, so not a bad time to buy if you are a "$2000 an ounce" camp.

I have no idea of Half Sov prices. I presume there is a few $100 in bullion here - does anyone know what typical current retail is for these, as I want to sell them ASAP at a fair price.

Thanks in advance!

Glen

Try this link and the web pages after it. Prices realised in auction of 21st. October, so it's as current as you can get

They are .917 fine gold, each containing 0.1177 ounces of pure gold, which at today's spot price of US$1725 per ounce, would be US$203 per coin ($406 for the pair). Here non-U.S. gold sells at or a little bit below spot. Locally these would sell for about US$190 each. A retail coin shop might price them at $225 or so to leave room to discount if need be.

Be sure to weigh them though, as fakes do abound, at least over here... especially with gold prices as high as they are. A real coin should weigh 4 grams.

So yes, there's definitely "a few $100 in bullion" :)

I would think that US$350-380 for the pair wholesale would be realistic.

Great website Paul .. have never seen that - most handy! Says $US408 Bullion alone. 8)

Lakatoi .. perfect reference too ... thanks. :D

Revenue Collector - yes you are spot on with the above. They were in a calico bag for decades so are not fakes. 8)

I'll list them up for $A375 tonight, and turn them into cash pretty fast!

These 2 little coins were in this jun lot that I took out, in a real tiny yellowed glassine that I assumed were USA 1c pieces, but idly wondered why they were wrapped up.

They were in this bag of coin junk I bought today from an estate -

Status Auction prices are all plus 16.5% I think, so $170 hammer is around $A200 invoice for the 1908 Edwards.

I'm jinxed. WHENEVER I sell Bullion it jumps up $35 an ounce in the next few hours! And I offered under melt price to start with.

Gold is on the run again it seems - up around $90 in past 2 days.

As high as gold is, a $50+ swing in a day or two isn't unusual. As the spot price goes higher, a 1-2% move results in larger dollar jumps or drops.

The same volatility at a $300 spot price would have only been a few bucks either way... no biggie. Now it's MUCH more noticeable.

What's really scary (to me) has been the volatility in silver, not so much now, but a month ago, where there were some 10-20% moves.

Of course I had 25 ounces of silver I was all ready to sell right after it hit US$49 an ounce. It was trending down and I thought I'd wait for it to stabilize.... and it dropped all the way to US$28 an ounce. It's rebounded considerably (US$35.44 right now), but I'm going to hold until it closes in on $45 again... and it will.

A quick way to price the gold content of Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns (mint doesn't matter as they were all produced to a common Imperial standard as circulating coins) is to use the following formula;

Sovereign = 0.2354 * Gold price per troy ounce. If gold is $1,700 then a sovereign has a melt value of $400.18.

The melt value of a Half Sovereign is exactly half of the Sovereign value. So at $1,700 the Half has a melt value of $200.09.

Great info Peter.

Here is a left field one.

Everyone knows I buy all sorts of odd Estates and someone just bought over one that was a bit bizarre. Had a lot of nice coins and notes I'll list up soon, and 15 x 50c round coins, that are about $US180 melt today I think.

However here is the weird thing .... it had a weird looking dental group that appears to have some "gold" in there ... indeed one plate was entirely golden.

Now horrible WW2 stories aside, my question is is there really any GOLD used in dental gear these days?

All my dentist gave me a choice of month ago for a filling was 'amalgam' - silver looking, and white porcelain.

Sounds pretty weird, but if there IS any gold in there it is likely worth a $100 or two even if 9 or low carat, if those 2 tiny little half Sovs I sold last night were around $400 melt value.

I've sold old copper piping and lead over the years and can tell you that you don't get near the current spot value for those materials in the real world.

You basically get what the metal dealer is willing to buy for on the day.

So I really can't see how the current spot price for gold, silver or any precious metal is any different than those.

The current spot price can't really be anything but a guideline can it :?:

Gold and silver coins on the other hand, while they reflect the precious metal value, would have to also reflect the intrinsic value of the minted coin itself.

So if a gold escudo of 1650 or whatever recently sold for say $2,000 at auction or is with several dealers at near that amount, then that is pretty well a current benchmark I'd think and therefore relatively stable. Or am I completely wrong :?:

Tony .. yes I guess my question is how much 'gold' (if any) is in "gold" dental settings.

Someone will be a dentist among us I am sure, and can offer some kind of rough answer. :)

I was just looking at this website as it happens and see that it gives an indication of the gold value for those macabre dental gold plates, etc.

It's based in the UK, but it would have to be proportional over here as well you'd think.

Just select the weight, lob it into the drop down box and it'll give you the current amount they'll buy for:

http://www.scrap-gold-buyers.co.uk/apply.html?weight=50&carat=Dental%20gold

P.S. Looked up dental gold and it's selling with them at slightly over the 14ct. gold value so it may be 9ct. with some platinum in it or 18ct. mixed with another lower value metal to toughen it up a bit

Tony .. you are a genius -- I had no idea that dental gold would be bought separately. 8)

You are right the price per gram they quote is a bit above 14 carat standard gold, and yes it does seem to have platinum in there, which I recall is higher priced than gold a gram.

The gold pieces all busted off pretty readily thank goodness -- this is like being at Ballarat or Bendigo etc in 1850s! (I was born in Ballarat so it must be in the blood. )

The weight of the dental gold is about 20 grams, so on the UK buying site it comes to £394.

I can never be bothered mailing stuff Registered overseas, and getting a sterling cheque a month later, so I'll offer it all here for about half that, as it cost me zippo to be honest.

Glen, follow this link for accurate precious metal prices.

http://www.kitco.com/market/aud_charts.html

The prices are quoted in Aussie dollars.

The reason I am sending this to you is because, at present, Gold is worth MORE than Platinum.

Ha!

Well I will never make a bullion dealer it seems. :)

The pommies will pay 400 quid for this, and they seem pretty sure what "dental gold" is made of, so I'll sell it for $A300 to the first member that wants it, to save myself the hassle, as it cost me little. 8)

Glen, do you still have these? Or have they been sold long ago (that I would expect).
