FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TIBET UPRISING
AGAINST THE ILLEGAL CHINESE OCCUPATION.

Chinese invaders have illegally occupied the country of Tibet since 1951. The year 2009 marked the 50th anniversary of the Tibet Uprising against the Chinese oppressors, in 1959, so to mark the date in a philatelic way, a set of two CAL stamps featuring the Tibet flag was issued.

50c ... Tibet flag, with a red stripe down the right margin.
$1 ... Tibet flag, with a white stripe down the right margin.

The stamps can be used on regular mail or overseas airmail by anyone.
The cal stamps are on gummed paper and perf 13.5. They were printed by NZ Post Ltd.

Date of issue of these stamps was 21st September 2009.

Each stamp shows the years 1959 - 2009 in small print below the flag. The margins of the sheets have been printed in blue, with a Tibet website down both sides, a heading along the top, and a three-line inscription along the bottom. This edge printing was privately done. The text at the bottom of the sheets reads:

These stamps remember the 50th anniversary of the Tibet Uprising against the illegal Chinese occupation of their country. The uprising followed repeated Chinese violations of the 1951 "17 Point Agreement" which China forced on Tibet.

===

Here for auction is a fine used set.

These cals were NOT included in the Annual Packs, as NZ Post frantically scrambled to avoid "offending" the occupying power. (Tibetans have been offended by the occupier for over 50 years!)

Too many incorrect descriptions in your list.

I am very surprised that New Zealand Post printed them!

Do we put this down to "The Power Of The Press", or to luck in circumventing the odorous censorship in New Zealand ?

Overseas usage of those stamps attracted the attention of the Chinese who complained to the NZ government. Whenever these stamps were observed by NZ Post the authorities obscured the stamp by covering it with a huge "AIR MAIL" sticker.

Fortunately there are a small number of these exciting stamps around within the philatelic sphere.

And some even went thru the international mail with no issue, HOWEVER all members are directed to the forum RULES, where chit chat is NOT permitted in the Sales forum. :idea:
