Just thought I would add this. The second one is not a 'Roo (obviously) but I scanned these for another thread, and then remebered this thread.

That will be this one:

Quiz time. :D

State stamps aside, what was the first Commonwealth of Australia Stamp to depict a Kangaroo?

OK put me out of my misery. I thought it was the Roo & Map but that seems too obvious, I've been searching everywhere for an alternative but I'm stumped

Or do you mean which of the Roo and Map?
If so the 1 penny red of the series, issued 2.1.1913.

Or is it some Postage Due / Stamp Duty???

I print my own envelopes when I send stuff to my fellow philatelists, including a kangaroo in my Air Mail label. I sometimes also add an image to the lower left of the envelope depending on the recipient's collecting interests.

Image

Image

I knew all three of of the kangaroos personally when they were in my care. I even wear a few of Nigel's scars.

If any kangaroo collector would like one of these let me know your mailing address by email, and whether you would prefer First Peek (Tawnie & Joey) or Nigel. No charge to anywhere unless I get totally inundated, offer stands till end of September 2010. I will use an envelope without postcode squares and put a stiffening card inside, nothing else, so no need to open on arrival. And sorry, you may not request specific stamps as my post office doesn't have much variety ... I will select from what's available.

Ha!

Well done - that Postage Due looks to be the FIRST Roo to me! Great offer re the covers too.

In 30 years of dealing you assume you have at some point seeen or handled EVERYTHING to do with Australian issues.

Not so.

Got both these guys in the mail today. Fresh MUH/MVLH with original gum. In incredible shape for 70-75 years old.

Large size .. the GB stamp shows they are about 4 times as large.

Anyone else ever sighted these?

I was actually trying to identify a couple of no country name stamps from Glen's cigar box assortment, and was down to using my jeweller's loupe when I spotted the critters that gave the game away. I had never noticed them before.

I just posted these PALS labels on the Admiral COONTZ thread.

I've had them for years and the COONTZ thread prompted me to dig them out.

You are not likely to see the Kangaroo offered separately but you might get lucky.

I have one from Stirling, South Australia, at the 1½d rate, otherwise the same design.

Does anyone know the time period for these?

I'd hazard a guess muruk and say late 1920s. I have a similar looking item and the flap actually has '1927' and the printers details.

Muruk, thanks for adding the covers you have found, I'm getting quite envious of your collection !
How on earth did you see that Cricket Kangaroo, I looked and looked and thought you were nuts until I scrolled down to your close up. Very good spotting !

Norvic that Winslow cover is a beauty !

I have a theory that the little Roo down on the right is exactly the same as the one on the Roo and Map stamps. I wonder if this is where "baldy" got the image from.

I would be very interested to see your list Muruk.
I'm sure I've only collected the tip of the ice berg compared to what is out there. Did you include the International stamps too ?

I had a collection sent to me today that had a nice Kangaroo PALS one on its own. Clean and fresh and fault free. They are HUGE stamps by the way - about 4 times a KGV head stamp size. 8)

I've made an offer for the lot, so fingers crossed they'll accept it. :D

Someone has asked me for this one, but thought I'd add a solo scan of it for the historical record!

OK, here's my list. Australian stamps only, and including obscure items like Kangaroo Paw Flowers. Additions and corrections most welcome. It's entirely possible I have errors, so consider this a first draft.

Might need to reduce your screen magnification to remove linewrap.

A pretty comprehensive Australian list there, Muruk.

Then there's the foreign ones, a lot were done for Aussiepex84.

^^ Yes, I'm compiling a foreign list, but only from what I find as I go along. To troll through all 5 volumes of SG would be a mammoth task, and far too easy to miss those that are part of a set and not illustrated, as I found with the Australian ones.

Maybe I will do Papua New Guinea next. I can extract the 'roos when I have completed my general listing.

The American Topical Association has assigned a code to Kangaroos on Stamps (0602). Don't know if somebody has already compiled a listing of stamps showing kangaroos. I know the thematic societies I am a member of do have lists.

Great list Muruk ! I'm slowly going through it , and will probly pop back a few times to comment.
You've done a huge job , excellent work !
So many there I didn't know of

from a quick glance, One you might have missed - 2003 Genetics, 50c design is "Kangaroo Chromosomes" (The Scientist is holding a baby kangaroo on the minisheet)
and I thought I'd seen an Aboriginal art stamp with a rock painting of a Kangaroo, but I can't locate it now to confirm... might have imagined that

Are you thinking of the 1984 85c 'rock possum'?

Skippy, I've just lobbed in here without looking at all the previous posts, so forgive me if I'm repeating anything. This is just for Australian issues.

Did you get the 1970 Cook bicentenary issues? both the 3rd 5c in the strip and the 30c have a 'Big Red' sitting there.

On the 3rd "Santa Card" (issued 6th December 1982), there's a 'roo holding one of Santa's sacks.

Earlier the same year, on the Brisbane Commonwealth Games Mini-sheet, issued in September, one of the sheets held an image of "Matilda" in the top left-hand corner.

18th April 1980 - there was a grey kangaroo featured on a 22c PSE.

Prior to that; 30th May 1979 - 20c "175th Anniversary of Foundation of Hobart" PSE shows emu & KANGAROO both looking away from Tasmania's shield.

Many of the letter-cards from 1912 through to 1959 also show the kangaroo on the shield - good luck finding some of THEM

NSW had 1s 'roo in 1860 and 1888.

On the 1894-1911 issues of the 2p ha'penny S.A. issues, you'll find a 'roo cuddling QV's head.

Are you thinking of the 1984 85c 'rock possum'?

Thanks mcgooley, That must be the one, (just found the picture in my catalogue) I didn't realise it was a possum

Although I have a memory of an x-ray type Aboriginal painting , thinner than that possum ?.
I must be getting confused with the old $1 paper note and not a stamp at all

Thankyou for the other kangaroos you've spotted, I've made a note of them and I'll compare them to Muruk's list too.

Skippy, I've just lobbed in here without looking at all the previous posts, so forgive me if I'm repeating anything.

Nothing to forgive mcgooley, It's great to have a few eyes out there looking for roos, even if there is a double up along the way, I really appreciate the input to this thread, Thankyou

One you might have missed - 2003 Genetics, 50c design is "Kangaroo Chromosomes" (The Scientist is holding a baby kangaroo on the minisheet)

I knew about that one, but somehow missed recording it.

Are BOTH stamps 'roo DNA? My catalogue doesn't tell me.

Got it now.

I thought I'd seen an Aboriginal art stamp with a rock painting of a Kangaroo, but I can't locate it now to confirm.

I nearly went blind going through the Aboriginal art ... I thought I saw some too, but only found the Rock Possum.

I have all the stamps McGooley mentioned, but haven't included any postal stationery as I don't have a catalogue.

I will also add the Commonwealth Games mini-sheet that McGooley mentioned.
