Hi,

I was arranging UNO stamps. UNO philatelic Dept. used to send thick envelopes, cardboard type, all of them have UNOs stamps. Envelopes have Cancellations. As the envelopes are large sizes, Should I remove stamps or cut out all stamps including Cancellation marks?

Any feedback highly appreciated.

Cheers
tikithindi

Hi tikithindi, any chance of a picture? Might help try to determine the best course of action!

Agreed, without a picture it's difficult to give a reasoned answer...

...but I seem to recall reading elsewhere on Stampboards that a major New York stamp dealer was the UN's "Best Customer" and sent thousands of lists/catalogues out using a cheap postage deal.

So, I suspect that these are not uncommon and have little extra value left on cover (but don't take my word for it - someone else will have better knowledge...)

Hi,

Following are two of many envelopes I have scanned. I was thinking to make proper cut out
and keep those. Little reluctant to soak and remove stamps. what do you suggest.
Thanks hutch and gavin-h... any opinion ? Please.

Hi tikithindi, if it were me, I'd be keeping them as a whole but I can see your problem. They are rather big and storage can be a problem!

I have a plastic storage bin with lid that I put all my oversize envelopes in. They are divided by country and in date order. I never thought I'd fill it but it's suprising how many large envelopes I seem to have accumulated and it's now over half full.

If you do have to cut them out...I wouldn't soak them!...make sure you have all the relevant information, handstamps etc. Those registered stickers are in a bad place though aren't they! And they would account for any increase in postage too.

It is though, up to you and how much room you have for storage.

Good luck!

They're 'just' envelopes from the philatelic bureau, I'd say they're of little value kept complete, and storage is a bit of a problem. If you were to buy an album with oversize pages, or a portfolio-type folder used by artists etc, imagine the cost of that--do you want to spend, say, $50 to display $2 worth of stamps?

Modern commercial covers have a strong collector following and can commensurately command (sorry for the alliteration) high prices...but if the envelope has "philatelic bureau" as the return address, well it quite literally screams philatelically-contrived. :?

Hi,
Thank to hutch and all others for taking time to reply and nice advice. I am Collecting UNO Issues since
1974. If the order was more than $100 Bureau will send by Registered Mail other wise UN-register, I will
keep as it is in the Plastic bin. Only after 2004 I lapsed in subscription. UNO will use Stamps of new issues and
some others to make up postage. Canada and USA just sent Envelopes Large or small without Stamps.

It is good to know how other thinks and little little thing you get nice feedback. Much appreciated. :D

Thanks again.

I sell a lot of modern covers, and I'd say these are too big and much too philatelic, especially as most of the stamps are used way outside their issue period.

I wouldn't even bother trying to sell them as is and would cut off the stamps!

I sort of agree with you passport_collect. But from my point of view, if I have not got that particular stamp even if it's an out of issue cancellation, I would be more than delighted to have it!

The storage is always a problem for such large sized envelopes so in the end, I would probably cut the huge ones down to manageable pieces with post marks and whatever and hope I did the right thing. But ones that fit in my little bins?...they stay whole!

Tikithindi, I hope you are feeling much better and can continue your stamp collecting!

I would chop the stamps off and just keep them on piece.

Too big to store, and as these are common and philatelic, there would be almost zero financial advantage in keeping them on cover.

You know guys??? I have to agree with you in most respects...except for one!

I don't care about the financial aspect of the stamp/s in question! I collect...and therefore I collect the different issues and therein lies the problem...how to store them when they are on cover. Once upon a time I used to just rip the stamps off the cover. I have learnt my lesson!

Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it not. A stamp on piece is surely better than just a used stamp though, so I'll go for that...at least I'd have the stamp!
