I have a cover sent from Belfast Ireland (cancelled 8pm 31st May 1935) addressed to Buenos Aires

The only way at that time to get to South America was via Germany.

There is an arrival stamp on the rear 'Buenos Aries, 5th June 1935'.

The only way it could have got there by that date was by the Graf Zeppelin leaving Berlin on the 1st June 1935.

How did the letter get from Belfast at 8pm to catch the Graf Zeppelin on the 1st June 1935

Can anyone advise of an overnight airmail service from Ireland to germany which fullfills these details?

Ross, I have just spent 10 minutes changing headings into something meaningful, adding pars, moving threads to the Forums they should have been in, and so on.

Can you READ the Rules please, and read up on how to add photos - this post needs one -

Easing gradually into a Board is a wise idea, not changing in like a bull at a gate.

Thanks Admin

Hi Ross

We certainly would like to see such a rare item.

I have no idea about the Belfast to Friedrichshafen route but I can note that the LZ 127 only left Friedrichshafen at 19:53 on June 1 according to Sieger. This allows about 24 hours for the Belfast-Germany portion of the trip which looks quite enough.

What was the air route that the Zeppelin took after leaving Germany to cross the Atlantic?
Were there not times when they picked up mail en-route or even off ships at sea?

Greg

Mail for the flight was collected in Berlin and Stuttgart in addition to Friedrischshafen. The collecting point can be identified from markings on the letter. Hence the importance of posting a scan or a photo of the cover before any definitive answer can be provided.

There seem not to have been any en-route stop on this flight, though mail was dropped at Lisbon instead of the normal drop off point at Larache, Morocco for mail to Sevilla.

It could also be a catapult flight and not a cover via Zeppelin.
