Will be in Qld later this year and was wondering if there are any stamp shops that members recommend? :)

Like everywhere else, there are probably very few left. :(

Thanks.

There used to be two in Brisbane City until recently, but redevelopment of both premises (and probably rent escalation) have seen them disappear. Unfortunately, none come to mind that I can recommend, but then my collecting interests are narrow. I am sure others from QLD will be along shortly to give an appraisal of any shops in their local area :D

The only one I can think of my side of town is Gold Coast stamps and coins run by Warren and his wife from a shop they set up under there house in Southport.

http://www.coins-stamps.com.au/

Most others have closed down or converted to selling online like most other things in this world.

I use to like the old days when you could go to a stamp dealer and just rummage all day. Hope the web link comes out alright as I just cut and pasted it.

Cheers Robbo

I too have used Warren in the past to purchase some more generic German material, and Lighthouse supplies. Generally pleased with the service.

I know there's one near Mt Gravatt and one in Clayfield. Use Yellow Pages online and search for stamps in Brisbane and you should find them.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys.

I will have a look at Yellow Pages online.

If anyone else has suggestions, I'd be happy to hear from you.

If you time your visit with one of the local stamp club's shows I think you'd get more benefit out of going to one of them. 'Stamp News' I know lists upcoming shows.

Don't do this, and assume they will still exist. I and a work collegue tried this in May 2010, and we traipsed around the Brisbane CBD with a list of six stamp shops, none of which still existed (curiously five of the six had been converted to international training schools).

I had a similar problem in Newcastle recently, where the newly delivered Yellow Pages had a number of ads for stamp dealers that no longer existed.

Haven't had any joy.

There is a lady at Carrara Markets on the weekend.

Assorted stamps, covers, coins etc.

Nice covers.

Reasonable prices.

John Platts in Mackay.

Shop 6 Whitsunday Arcade Macalister St, Mackay QLD 4740, Australia

I've never been to his actual store, only his fairs (which he brings out to small country towns, like mine, that would never otherwise see a stamp dealer) which I find very good :)

I agree, living in Paradise 100km west of Cairns the only stamp dealer we see is John. He brings an incredible amount of stuff to fairs he holds, usually on an annual basis. Have bought all sorts of things from him over the years. As far as I know there are now no stamps dealers/shops in Cairns a city of 120,000. So thank God for the internet and mail order.

Sounds like a business opportunity to me - Internet is overcrowded already !

The shop in Clayfield, Brisbane is located in

Open Mon-Fri 10am to 6pm
Phone no. 07 3262 8810.

Use the side road Wagner St, 2nd driveway on the left for parking.

Trust you'll find some bargains there.

Cheers

Just came across this thread I posted months ago!

Thanks to everyone for your input. I had a great time away.

Very close to my main hotel I came across a BRILLIANT stamp shop. :D

F J Luis Philatelic Sales which is located in the main street of Surfers Paradise in Queensland. It's on the second level of MAWARRA HOUSE.

He's a really friendly dealer, happy to have a chat, he had some great stock, and good variety all priced reasonably. He's open Monday - Saturday but is often away at various shows, both within Australia and outside of Australia.

He does not have a computer, internet or email so if you want to buy something you need to write, call or visit his shop.

A timely bump for this thread as I'll be back over in Queensland soon. :D

Thanks to everyone for your input above.

I certainly plan on visiting some of the above dealers to do some hunting, gathering and shopping.

Er, Port Douglas is in Queensland, and there is a philatelic "shop" in the main street. We even have electricity.

All welcome. Just don't ask for new issues, kiloware . . . or Hagners (and anything else philatelic that isn't covers/stationery).

See you in paradise.

I was looking for some 20c Wheat stamps, but they must be soaked off cover.

Seriously I'll see if I can get up to Port Douglas from where I'm staying but unsure as yet. :D
