What fiasco? The only reason I can think of to trudge out in the freezing cold would be to see the Brisbane Lions play, and did they lose?

(Wait until I get into the air-raid shelter before anyone answers)

Question for the Collective::: :?: :?: :?:

In reading alot of books/threads and other misc. items, I have come to conclusion that I am still dumbfounded on trying to work out values :(

If I have say a 6d Blue Roo with perf "OS", and there is also a constant flaw on that stamp, how would I work out the value of that item, because there is one value for the OS + there is value for the constant flaw, do I add the 2 together or is there some other way to work out it's value??? This one has always confused me....... :? :?

I'm sure between the Rolf Harris looka likes, an answer will prevail...

Keep it simple though, still learning all this.

Hi Lisamidge,

Its a bit like working out the price for a good cover.

1. one checks the stamp. (perhaps cat at $5.00.)

2. check out the postmark. (an unusual one say $1.00.)

3. check out any labels attached. (a early Airmail Label $3.00.)

4.check any backstamps.( normal one 50cents)

5. check who it was addressed to.(someone important $2.00)

all the bits have a price, when all added together gives the selling price,is this case $11.50.
then you have the visual attraction etc.+ another $1.00.or $2.

so this cover could sell at $15.00.

the same rules apply to plain Stamps...add all the bits together.
+ or - for condition and this will give you a rough idea of price,

However in the case of very rare or Hi Value items, more care has to be given, and if not sure always get it checked out by an expert.as the catalogues do not cover every single thing,

I am sure Waroff can add a bit more to this as well.

Thanks for sharing this knowledge. Never knew covers were valued this way. Have bought a few Federated Malay States covers and always wondered why some were more expensive than others. This definitely gives me some idea.

Cheers

Andrew

Glad you found that of some interst Andrew.

it was fairly basic, but that was what Lisamidge asked for.

but as we all know there would be lots of situations when that system would not work,
but as a basic start it works well.

but also for that system to work one has to have a knowledge of Stamps, Post Marks.Labels, envelopes, postage Rates, Cinderellas.etc.
and be able to find out the prices of such items and put them together to come up with a total price,so one need lots of books, and catalogues, and build up a good LIBRARY it is worth its weight in gold.

I think that beardless photo is a touch-up job, no body could be that Hand-some.

I wouldn't listen to Ron's method of working out the price of covers- there's a $1.00 box, a $2 box and a box of POR. And I think at times, some of the $1 ones are for suckers like me- I started out spending $1-2 then $10 and now the skies the limit. (That is within the limits on an old pensioner            )

Ron should be down Thurs. to see what goodies you.ve stacked away for me......that is if Lawrence hasn't snaffled them already. I bet he was at the door panting and waiting for the arrival of the new batch.

I really didn't have my finger in the hole.....I was just looking for the first farthing Ron earned as a lad and to make sure Gerry hadn't slipped in some of those washers about the size of a dollar coin.

(note to self: You've got to get Old Harry donating.....)

Whilst not a member of the GOMC/GOPC I have been following the latest competition with interest.
I have it on good authority that the proper term for a group of Santas in one place is:

"A Stamp of Santas".

Cheers

well the auction is History all done and dusted,

But I hope Garry never pulls another auction on a Friday in the School Holidays,....Parking was a Nightmare, :!: :!:

so by the time I got into the joint ALL the prime back positions were gone.
So I thought well,, being one who is not hard to miss in a crowd, lets go down the front for a change, room to stretch my legs.

To my horror who should park himself immediatly BEHIND me but My Nemesis,"The Turk" Oh.S--t though I ,,,, the only good thing is ..he is not in his VAN today, which means he cant have ALL the lots.and there were 60 + carton lots many with 2,3,4,and even a 5 carton lot
So after a late start we got down to it,I let him have the first couple of lots ,as they held little interest for me,but then the 1st one I was interested in came up.and low and behold it went way above what I thought it would fetch.and was knocked down to a couple of little old ladies,

the next 2-3 went the same way, by this time the Turk and I were starting to sweat a bit.well this new compitition, was hurting us.
but it seemed perhaps they too had filled their car,and they slowly lapsed out of the bidding.
But it seems sitting in front of the Turk, worked to my advantage, as he seemed to let me have a few lots that I was sure he would have left me behind in the bidding,
I think perhaps he is moving a bit more upmarket as he was still sitting there after I left, and he is usually the 1st to go,

so by the end of the Penny section I was the winner of 9 lots inc 0ne 3 carton job,of which I drove home and left 2 cartons
sitting there,I was shell shocked by my wins
So spent an enjoyable evening watching St Kilda roll Carlton, while I rumaged through 9 cartons of Stuff,"Oh What Bliss" :D :D :D
with 2 cartons still to come ,,,it looks like we will do well yet again,,,,in one there was a large tin box,FULL of the last 4-5 years of Aust Post MINT in Blocks of 4,right up to $20.00.Have not counted it yet but would be $800.00.++ face and this box was not mentioned in the Auction Description,
and I too did not know it was there, until last night,
When I look through the lots before an Auction,as I am looking at Many Many lots mostly Large Cartons,I really do not have time to check out every single stamp, tin, envelope etc,so I just have a rummage see what I think is worth bidding for and the rest is unknown and where the profit lies, well mostly

so Bill shall I expect you on Monday, :?:

Just rescued this cover from a guy at work who received it recently from Britain. Carry On movies on stamps.

Do any of the GOMC have a favourite Carry On movie?

Being a Kilmarnock FC fan, mine has to be Carry On Regardless!

A Grump of Santas

submitted by Scotsmanabroad,wins the prize,.

The one thought of by the GOMC. was a "Presents of Santas."

could be looked at 2 ways,a "presence or Presents,"

But no one picked it.,but our 2nd choice still wins,BUT from now on "THAT" picture will be called a Presents of Santas.

we had a good attendance at todays meeting,Dr Agony.Sherro,Waroff.Mr Boggler.Gold Finger, & Parryone.
they were like Kids at Christmas.but I must say the quietest I have ever heard, they were all up to their armpits in Boxes of stuff,(Pictures will Follow),

actually even as this is being typed there is still 3 of em here,
looks like I will have to Ring "the Time Gentlemen Please" Bell and Chuck them out, again.

so if ScotsmanAbroad would like to e-mail me we can organise his Prize,

Ron.

Ron was telling fibs. We were -Hey Harry look at this....Is this what you want Sherro, etc.

Came closing time and yes we had to be kicked out. Ron didn't even get a chance to price my lot of KGV, postmarks, OS, States, and to make Revenuer happy, some old Tassie revenues, plus some RSA.

Ron entered in the swear BOX when he saw the carnage on the GB stamps. He saw the same signature/scribble on several of the lots. Even Gerry nearly wept when he saw a block of 8 ,ÂŁ2 machins scribbled across.

(If you are saying why don't you show us- well some of the biro scribble just doesn't show up on scans. Some I've posted elsewhere.)

The continuing saga of Friday's auction.

As we were pushed out the door at the end of a pointed broom last night, I left my selection of items for Ron to price today (when I had more money in my pocket).

So I rolled up today, expecting to get a car park near the shop. Twas not to be. The whole car park was full, so it was off over the road to Carpark 6. I found the last spot there. Ron later told me there was an oldies group that had come to see "Mama Mia", all 133 of them.

I was now here. After the greetings with Lawrence(GOMC3) and enquiries as to his long weekend in NSW, it was down to business.
As usual I picked up a pile and started looking through it, when I noticed I was getting dirty looks from #3. I retreated with not a word being said. I got the message and moved to another box.

After about an hour or so (one can't hurry these big decisions or the hope of finding more "goodies"), Ron decidied it was time to tally up. Ron looked closely a all the stamps, covers, VG's, OS's , Malayan, and an old envelope of cheap RSA stamps. He sifted through them- all of a sudden........No you can't have this one....
Why not, it's only a Cinderella, I replied.

The the Harry (GOMC#2) came out in Ron.....It's a Sth Africa wartime Cinderella and I collect them and I don't have this one. I was happy to forgo this piece of old junk...(         )

Several times Ron lowered his glasses to look over the top..... as he has want to do when looking closely at items. I thought here goes.....clink $10....clink $10....clink $10 . I could see the cost was mounting. He looked up and said...you've got a lot of stuff here..... I thought eeerrrrhhhh. He then picked up a bundle of KGV 1d greens, at 10c each.....clink...clink another $10-20 DOLLARS.

He then reached down and wrote a figure on an old envelope. OK, Ron what's the damage.......GUESS.....I gave him a figure I thought it would come to.......NO- lower..... it took me 3 guesses to get the right amount. I was most surprised.

I'm going to shop here again I told him. He just smiled.

Any way, the figure was a bit higher than the money I had in my moth infested wallet, so I said I'll be back in 10 minutes. Exit stage right to go to the bank.

Ruturn in about 10 minutes and here's ParryOne (GOMC Associate #1- in training -as he's not old enough.) going through my bag of goodies and he has made several selections from mmmmmmmmmmMY plastic bag.

Did I give him a serve (not swear box quality though), red faced he apologised profusely and we went out and had a ciggie. Waters were smoothed and we calmed down....... You know of course this will be a topic for the GOMC thread......more red faces.

Just goes to show, what can happen when you leave your goodies unattended, like a bag at the airport. Also when more than 1 GOM is looking at the same lots at the same time.....Disaster....

You can't get holidays and you work for yourself? You may have a problem there. :? You could try threatening yourself with industrial action. What about taking yourself to a tribunal? Or, take yourself to one side and have a quiet word. If none of these work then the rest of the GOMC will have to rise up and offer to work in your place while you give yourself a break :D You don't want to become one of the oppressed masses. (I'm sure Waroff49 doesn't think of you as an oppressed mass :!: )
Time to go I'm starting to ramble

ScotsmanonBored,

Rambling is the first quality of a GOMC, there are several others but I shan't go into them here.

No problem, I like to do my bit to help the proletariat

Now that you've been fired though, the rest of the GOMC will have to revolt......could the GOMC be revolting :?: The Declaration of Human Rights states that "everyone is entitled to 2 weeks paid vacation". So we'll have to enlist some rock stars to do a Benefit Gig for you!! FREE MRBOGGLER!
