For readers in North America, you have to remember that even London is a long way north - about the equivalent of Labrador in Canada.

So seeing this phenomenon over most of the United States, isn't on.

Lots of Stampboarders up North...did anyone manage to catch their own pics of this?

Also how long do such displays normally last- it is just transitory or would the effect be visible for, say, hours?

It is visible for great lengths of time (hours).
It can also be multicolored.

Unfortunately I'm too far south to see it at the moment.
Actually it is snowing so I have no idea if it is visible.

I am sure the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) will be just as spectacular. Hope the penguins are enjoying them. :D
