Just moved into a rural property which had no mailbox. I took awhile to put up a mailbox and know a number of letters were returned to sender as the postie had no way of delivering the letters.(The house is 700 metres along a track from the road) I rang customer information and found that normal letters without a return to sender address are sheddered. Parcels and large letters are kept awhile prior to being auctioned for charity.

I had hoped that the letters may have been kept a couple of months but that is not the case.

It would be disapointing ... I guess with no idea of where to deliver, and no sender address on back of envelope, there is nothing they can do with them, except for binning or shredding them. :(

Hope you didn't lose too many stamps.

Would love to attend one of the charity auctions for unclaimed parcels, large letters etc - There would be some pretty interesting stuff amongst it all. :D

I think Abbey Auctions in Box Hill Melbourne do them every year or so, :?: :?: :?:

I think you'll find that the Australian dead letter office has the power to open mail and see if there is an address on the inside to return to sender. :D

If not then a powerful light shone thorugh the envelope can reveal a return address without opening it!

Proof:

Anyone who sends out mail without putting a return address somewhere on the envelope is a twit, or couldn't care less if it got delivered or not.
