We are increasing on average around 500 members every 90 days, so expect the biggie (10,000) around a year from now.

Thanks Matt- it would have ben nice on our 5th birthday but its in the birthday month

Fromdownunder has been charting membership stats:

6,000 March 29 2011 (84 days)
6,500 June 30 2011 (93 days)
7,000 October 21 2011 (113 days)
7,500 January 17 2012 (88 days)
8,000 April 7 2012 (81 days)

At this rate we should het the 9,000 mark about November.

You might also be interested in the breakdown of where members come from I did in 2010....we are a board with an Australian flavour (eucalyptus? ) but Australians are definitely outnumbered:

***************
Image

Given that we have just passed the 600,000 post mark, I thought it would be interesting to do some very basic analysis of our membership in recent times.

We have had 802 new members since we hit the 3,000 member mark on 10 June last year. That is an average of 3.5 new members per day.

There has been a slightly higher rate since 1st Jan 2010 ... 97 new members ie 4.4 per day.

The location breakdown for those new members is as follows:

Asia 10
Australia 18
Canada 5
Europe (non-UK) 15
Middle East 3
New Zealand 2
South America 1
UK 16
USA 25

If we consolidate this into:

Americas 31
All Europe 31
Australasia 30
Other 3

I think its fair to say in terms of new members at least, this is no longer an 'Aussie board'

I've done a pie chart above to represent this:

Of course, the really big news is that we now have two Mods. from the Geelong area. Cream does rise to the top. :D

Just as a note of caution ... of those members, 3294 (as of the time of checking) have never made a single post, and another 1269 have made precisely one (on the introduction thread most likely). Only 930 have reached 50 posts. In other words, the practical size of the boards is much lower, it's standard long tail distribution you get on most things like this with most "members" either inactive or "lurking".

The success is all down to the MEMBERS actually!

The 1000s of members posting here is what keeps this board so lively. :)

Interesting that there are more new members from the USA than Australia. But given the size of the populations of the two countries, that is not too surprising.

Interesting.

There are 662 members, to date, who have reached 100 posts.

The list gets shorter once you reach 1000 posts, 154 members have reached this mark.

That's both impressive and only the beginning: with 200 countries in the world,
this means a mere 40 Stampboarders per country on average. And in the light of mozzerb's statistical analysis it is even worse, in terms of active contributions.
And note that this is easily the most successful bulletin board on stamps on the
planet, with no real competition in fact.
Compare the number of reactions any middle of the road premiere league football match (Newcastle-Bolton) gets in the UK via Yahoo alone ...
But there must be many more dedicated collectors out there than just the few of us.
Stamp auctions have never been as successful/profitable as today
(admittedly, that goes hand in hand with the demise of your local stamp shoppe).
I guess the negative correlation between the average age of stamp collectors
and people roaming the internet may be a factor for the arguably modestly sized
community that we are.
Any idea how to reach out to all those others?
I am thinking of individuals, but also of linguistic associations.
It would be a waste to miss out on all that collective knowledge,
on top of what is shown on these pages already now on an everyday basis.

H. You get me rambling. Do the others want to be reached - and why would you want to reach them?

About the shops.

Most of my favourite stamp shops and auction houses kicked the bucket. Too bad.

I enjoyed the intimate shopping experience and social interaction dynamics which online resources lack. The internet turned out more efficient and in the process the shops and auctions needed to evolve and some didn't make it.

About web-philately

Online resources have grown, collective knowledge stored in boards, marketplaces and sites like wikipedia is vast. The more knowledge is available, the less collaboration is required to achieve a certain goal.

The main part of the 8,000 presumably use this board solely as one of their knowledge resources. The primary goal of this board.

It is not unthinkable that this board will reach a point where almost every technical aspect of philately will be covered and the primary admins job is yelling at posters: RTFT (Read The Former Threads).

Quite true. Any any given time there are usually 6 "guests" to each logged in member -

Image

So our global reach is far more than 8,250 members. More like 50,000 really.

Many folks just read - that is fine with me. Many sign up only after reading or "lurking" here for years.

Our member numbers are REAL members - for each we allow, we delete 3 or 4 as spammers.

It is true - near all stamp term searches for ANYTHING on google now lead to this board. We have near 3 MILLION posts, and a ton of photos.

That was always my vision, and that is WHY we insist posts be neat, well laid out and using correct English.

Some do not like that, and they do not stay around - too bad, but our standards are high, as what we post today will be here in 10 years. So we want it to look GOOD first time.

Thanks to all those that assist with that high standard.

Onwards to 10,000. :)

Glen
