I was saddened to hear of the death of Doc Watson just a week ago.

Blind from childhood, Doc set the benchmark for all flatpickers. He won numerous Grammys but does not seem to be well known in the mainstream of music fans.

I have been listening to Doc’s playing since the late sixties and was amazed at the clarity, speed and melody of his music. A wonderful figure in music will be sadly missed.

For those who are not familiar with Doc’s music, there is plenty of stuff on the internet, you should take some time out to listen to some of his playing.

I nearly broke my fingers trying to play like him when I was a kid. He was not only inspirational as a musician, he was a complete gentleman as well.

I have an almost worn out copy of the instrumental album he did with Scruggs and Flatt (and I think it was Charley McCoy on the mouthorgan). I got it out a while back to try to digitise it but it was too far gone. Too many parties and bad needles (on the record player, of course, not at the parties).

As far as I could find out you can't get it any more yet it is one of the real classics. Sad news indeed but look what he left behind
