Hi,

I'm looking for a Scott catalogue for France. Even a "not too old one" would be great.

Or is there a way for me to find out what is the Scott catalogue numbering order for French stamps (if it does make sense). :?: :?: :?:

Cheers

In the latest Scott, France appears near the end of the C-F volume. Regulars and commems have plain numbers, like #353 and #1788. Semi-postals have a B-prefix, like #B420. Airmails have a C-prefix, like #C18. Postage dues have a J-prefix, like #J12. There are a few airmail semi-postals, like #CB2. The few military stamps begin with M, like #M4. Issues for the Council of Europe, #1O44; that's an O, not a zero. Newspaper stamps are #P7, etc. Occupation stamps are #N18, etc., and that includes the 1870 Alsace-Lorraine stamps. Allied Military Government stamps appear as #2N12, etc. At that point, you get into French Offices Abroad, listed separately from France.

Due to the huge number of issues, France is one of the very few countries in Scott to merit a text Index, which for instance, runs:
Auvergne.....1446, 2482
Auvergne, arms.....619
Auvergne, costume.....B171
Avanti.....B529
Avesnes-sur-Helpe.....935
etc.

Nearly every stamp is shown in color, about 1/3 size reduction.

They are priced mint and used, and for some older stamps, also never-hinged, as in Clement Ader 50 Fr of 1938, $110 never-hinged, $70 hinged, and $50 used (that's for the thin paper variety, the thick paper is somewhat higher). All issues after the 1935 Breton 2 Fr are understood to be priced never-hinged.

The last paragraph may seem to contain an inconsistency, but that is the precise way the data appears in the catalog.

"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds..."

Ralph Waldo Emerson, Essay on Self-Reliance, 1841

Thanks for that Doug.

Now, would you have an old copy you don't use?

Sorry, I have no extras.

Call bookstores. Write postcards to stamp club secretaries, asking for an announcement that you will buy.

Call your local libraries and find out if they will sell the old copy when a new copy comes in.

Finally, you can browse "France" in US eBay and note the catalog numbers cited, probably mostly better items.

Go to http://sydney.craigslist.org/wan/ and post a free ad, wanted to buy Scott Catalogs, although this compromises your privacy and security if someone answers and you reply to them. I would use a Yahoo or Hotmail email designed for one-time use only and meet in a public place, and after the transaction, cancel the email account. This is the safest course.

Ceres,

Volume 2 of the Scott Catalogue is the one you need for France. There is a topic similar to yours here:
http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=2951

In that topic I listed some ways to find Scott Catalogues on CD on ebay. The shipping will not be so terrifying  if you purchase the CD version. Just be sure that the seller will ship to overseas. The CD's are easy to use and read just like the print version.

If you buy Volume 2 of the 2008 Catalog on CD, note that pages can no longer be printed directly from the CD

Ceres,

I contacted Sheldon Ruckens, a US stamp dealer, to see if he was still selling PORTIONS of Scott catalogues. I have purchased from him in the past on ebay and he is dependable. I invited him to join this forum and here is his response:

Thank you SO MUCH for thinking of me....
I DO still have pages for many countries available from 2006 SCOTT catalogs... and some 2007's.

They are useful to people who just want the numbering system and not so concerned with the current values or newest issues.

I am willing to sell them to NON-US reasonably, plus whatever shipping is. You can refer my info if you wish..

I am in the San Diego area, and fires are all around me today, with mandatory evacuations.

I'll follow up on the website when I get a chance. Appreciate you thinking of me. Thanks again, S.

And splycos is not allowed under the rules to trade yet, and is continually treying to circumvent the rules by placing swap threads all over the place.

Hi Ceres

Try this dealer:
http://chirokmd.com/Default.aspx

or on eBay
http://stores.ebay.com/Stamps-From-Me-to-You

2013 available in May 2012

I have been buying from him for about 4 or 5 years. He and his wife are really nice people and pleasant to deal with.

[I also just realized how old this thread is but here is the information anyways]
