These two cinders were amongst a lot of N.Z. that came into the charity today amongst a nice N.Z. lot including a 3 shilling Admiral etc.

It is a pity the Maori cinder is damaged but any information on these would be appreciated.

Never seen them before and have the look of late 19th Century to me.

Be VERY hot items in the NZ market is my guess.

Those look like Salvation Army logos in the corners.

Oddly even though keenly collected the first issues noted are 1930s.

I have sent an email enquiry to the Salvo's collectable website. I will see if I get a reply.

Hello,

these 2 are part of a set of 36 cartridge stamps, issued probably in January 1919. Young people received 1 stamp a month if they attented regularly Sunday school or so. It took at least 3 years to complete the album.

In 1922/1923 another set was issued.

The seller offers some of them:

Hope, this helps.

Great info Archie - I felt sure you'd know. 8)

The others you linked to all look very founder, Booth based etc.

Any idea why they had a Maori in the set?

Hi,

there were some stamps with the Booths, some with Salvation Army buildings, flags and so, some with Salvation Army activities and some with people from countries in which the Salvation Army was present at that time, for example Maori, Java, China, India, Bermuda, Japan and others.

Regards, Archie

Interesting.

What would a full set of the 1919 sell for Archie?

I've bought from Just Wendy Stamps before, and can recommend them/her as a reliable firm to deal with - accurate descriptions, quick service and well-packaged.

My attention has been drawn to this item, by Glen - thank you.

Before I had scrolled down I was aware that these had something to do with the Sallies from their logo in the corners. I will ask a colleague of mine - who collects such items - about these next week and I hope to report more about them in due course.

I do not recall seeing the cinderellas before but the Kapa Haka stamps - yes! As Glen says they ain't cheap but they are well worth the asking price.

Incidentally there ought to be on display at Palmpex in November a very attractive exhibit about the art of the Maori - who knows the cinderellas may even be displayed there!

David.
