Bought this beauty today. Lovely condition for something that started in NZ, went via Sydney, and ended up in the UK.

Lovely picture postcard of Queen Street Auckland on reverse.

Superb sharp Sydney cds "16 AP - 13" and the 100% complete rare boxed violet blue

POSTED ON THE HIGH SEAS
PER ORIENT STEAMER

A cancel that I have NEVER seen or handled before.

If that one if for sale put my name on it. Here is one from my collection. Its 1/- block of 6 postmarked in Hawaii. Its small multi watermark. The parqubot is misspelled.

Not so glamorous, but in line with my bent for social history, the reverse has the name of the passenger and the vessel. It's an indistinct 1939 postmark.

Here's some nice info re my little boat, the Maloja

The vessel:

Image

On 11 September 1939 RMS Maloja was requisitioned by the Admiralty and converted to an armed merchant cruiser in Bombay, India which included having one of her funnels removed to increase the arc of the anti-aircraft guns. After the conversion she joined the Northern Patrol as H.M.S. Maloja with the number F26. The Northern Patrol had the unenviable task of covering the area between Shetland and Iceland. On 13 May 1940 H.M.S. Maloja intercepted a ship south-east of Iceland in position 63.00N, 10.20W. She claimed to be the Japanese vessel Taki Maru and although the captain suspected otherwise he was unable to send a boarding party due to the adverse weather conditions. As the weather cleared it became clear that she was in fact German, namely, the La Coruna of the Hamburg South American line. The German crew then proceeded to scuttle her to evade capture, and after they had abandoned ship and been picked out of the water by H.M.S. Maloja, she sank with the aid of gunfire from the Maloja. On 6 November 1941 H.M.S. Maloja was returned to P & O and she underwent a conversion to a troopship. She had her funnel reinstated, albeit a shorter version. In 1942 on 11 December she took part in the Allied landings in North Africa.

I got this pair of NZ 1d. KGV Field Marshall stamps (SG468) in a bulk lot and just happened to notice the part paquebot cancel on each.

When joined they form the complete word:

Folks,

How nice is that pair and what a shame they were not left on the cover.

We and not getting a lot of Paquetbots. I thought there would be quite a few out there.

Where are they all?

Thanks, Eric. Terribly philatelic, though, as a lot of these would seem to be. The fellow mailed it to himself, and probably didn't pick it up on purpose so it woud get the desired markings and eventually be mailed back to his home. Worked, though, didn't it?

Eventually is the key word.

It didn't get hand-stamped as undeliverable until about 90 days after mailing ... and then it took a little while longer for it to get hand-stamped by the Dead-Letter-Office, before being returned to the address on the back.

Folks,

There are some great cancels and covers there.

They seem to have some mystery about them being posted on the high seas.

So much nicer to see them on the cover rather than removed.

And I'm not sure that this one qualifies ie. would the Maritime Mail postmark have been applied on board, or added by some civil servant in a Naval office on shore?

jeneralist - what a strange one.

The "POST OFFICE" is not any kind of OFFICIAL cancel is my strong guess, but as it is part of a roller cancel duplex, would not imagine it was something a ship would have been able to create easily.

Most interesting. 8)

Did some research on the Arctic cover above and that cancel does appear to have been applied on board:

http://www.hms-vengeance.co.uk/arctic.htm

A pricey item is my guess. 8)

Thanks Glen - great link and the sample shown is very similar. I'll have to fine-tune my googles better in future.

Dare I say it - purchased on "that place" a few years ago for my polar bear collection. Priced next to nothing, but an interesting cover.

Yes Arctic from THAT vintage era is MOST collectible.

I took photos of the most Northern Point in the USA on the Arctic Sea 10 years back - bear in mind this was mid SUMMER:

And I once spent Xmas Day literally on the Arctic Circle in Finland! Minus 30º. This was the Santa Claus Post Office there!

Here are some other Arctic stamp shots:

Glen,

Wow. Thats 75 degrees difference in temperature than we have had here in Mildura over the last couple of weeks.

I think I would prefer the hot than the cold. Great experience though.

About time we gave this thread a bit of a bump.

First, a postcard showing the Post Office in Singapore.

"Inactive image Link deleted by Moderator"

Sadly the stamp is missing (Straits Settlements?), and the postmark is Penang (?) 23 JA 22. The interesting marking is the scarce Yokohama-Marseilles No 6 CDS. Would have been a gem with the stamp in situ.

Second, a postcard of the El Agha mosque in Cairo, and addressed to the same boy in Sydney (seems the poor soul was left at home when everyone went travelling)

"Inactive image Link deleted by Moderator"

Nice CDS of Port Taufiq and straight-line Paquebot stamp

"Inactive image Link deleted by Moderator"
And as you can see, it cost me a whole buck!

Continuing the Eqypt and Suez theme...

I am sure almost every collector has a Suez paquebot postcard lying around.

But if you have one from before 1894, please tell me...

Is this a Ships Letter ?

When the envelope is unfoled the inside cover is a decorated Menu from S.S. KUMANO MARU, plus space where the sender has written. (like an arerogram)

Was not posted at sea though.
